Well, there are four pistons in each caliper, and it isn’t uncommon for one to seize up. I found out i had three of those pistons seized up on one of my calipers a couple days ago.

That would explain an occasional hiss-like sound - pad dragging. That was the intent behind the questions in reply #7 ;)

I know we all want to jump to vacuum because of its obvious role here, but let's not forget function here, solid pad against spinning metal disc :D

I thought I had a bad caliper, but it ended up being the slide pins rusted to the caliper.

I know you did and appreciated the line of thought, but the hiss was definitely coming from the pedal area, we weren't hearing pad noise. Maybe the stuck piston is causing the booster pressure/hiss issue.

So now what should I do? Would the Sequoia benefit from the 14WA conversion... looking in the thread now for purchase source and info? Looks like a new oem caliper from Sparks is $250, vs conversion cost. I did just put new rotors and pads on in July so I hate to eat the rotors but if the upgrade is worth it I will?

Or fluid boil, building pressure, and it's hissing past the MC cap. Check for signs of blow-by on around the perimeter of the cap?

Does it currently have 13WLs or 13WEs or other?

Honestly I'm not sure, how do I check, by VIN I'm assuming?

What's your usage for the Sequoia? I have the 13WE (the smaller calipers) and have had no issues with over 50k miles up and down the mountains in Denver, but I don't tow. The big brake upgrade seems very hit and miss with the results. Mostly a spongy pedal that may require lots of parts to fix.

What brake pads are you running now?

The calipers are rebuildable and pretty simple or powerstop rebuilt calipers from rock auto are much cheaper than oem.

It's stamped on the side of the caliper

Look on brake line side of the caliper, what's embossed?

If 13WE, 13WL is an easy, no-machine (thus cheaper) solution to really improve braking and I think the only "aha!" is you'll need to trim the dust shield a hair.

Going to 14s is a bit more cost intensive, need to pick who to machine them to make them bolt up square, and they need to know how to do it right. I don't think it's worth it, but I've got 13WLs... and they're better performing than any other brakes on a truck I've owned, so I'm biased.

Makes sense if the caliper is sticking. BTW I've never had good luck replacing just one caliper. Even if the other side is in good shape it has pulled on me until I replaced the other side.

14WA is your next step-up if those aren't good enough.

    Info: https://www.tundras.com/threads/2000-2006-tundra-big-brake-upgrade-kit-14wa-calipers.61231/

Maybe some added context/Q&A to be seen in here: https://www.tundras.com/threads/noob-on-14wa-big-brake-conversion.117990/

I personally wouldn't do it, and for the record that's coming from the dude who'd tell you to swap a GenIII SBC into your Tundra if you ever blew the engine, but ... hey, y'know.

Regardless what you do, if it's been stickin for a bit, you'll want to replace the rotors on both sides along with calipers and pads, just in case there's extra wear on the passenger side.

I'll keep the SBC in mind, but fingers crossed for no blown motors!
I lifted the front off the ground and can barely turn the wheel by hand, so definitely stuck!
    The rotors are brand new...bummer!

If you do want to rebuild I found a f’n awesome video on YT University that goes into great detail which will help. It’s way cheaper to rebuild if you got the time. Could be a fun experience for you and the kid.

I recently found out about another option that would have performance in-between the 14WA and 13WL. 13WH, they came on the GX470. Same size caliper as the 13WL but the mounting arms are longer so it fits a larger diameter rotor. From what I've read it still requires machining to center up, so probably not worth it, might as well just go straight to 14WA. But I thought it was neat.

Well after much deliberation, and since I believe in sticking to OEM, I'm going to just skip straight to the 14WA upgrade.
