After 100 miles both ways on ATF fluid swap I'm happy to see the 4.6 2010 with 110k miles does this with STFT / LTFT at 77 mph on the interstate. Never mind that other jazz.

Zero / Zero across the board.

What's the relationship between transmission performance and fuel trim? Why is 0% a good thing?

Nothing! I just happened to have a guage setup running while watching trans temps and was amazed at 13 year old technology doing so well with balanced trims. i.e. working as intended too.

It means both bank 1 and bank 2 are being fueled equally as seen by o2 sensors and its running an AFR of 14.7:1 on both banks. Wear, tear, injectors, blowby are balanced on the little V8 with 111k miles. A good thing.

Well, it’s not exactly second gen or even tundra. I did a bunch of pre-season maintenance on the truck plow yesterday. I moved the stand and adjusted some pin points (due to truck lift) so it stands up where it’s supposed to now and I can drive into the plow. Installed a grader edge. Doubled up recoil springs. Fixed broke welds. And replaced a pivot pin that fell out. She’s brand new upgraded now bois ready for winter. :hattip:

Pumped all 5 U joints full of new grease. Anyone have a good method for cleaning off the expressed grease? Or do you just let 'er fling?

Mostly the nooks and crannies. Especially on the forward 3 joints with limited access.

I stick a rag in to grab some but mostly it comes out on its own.

Have you found a good tool to reach the front shaft u-joint at the xfer case? I've been dropping 4 bolts and pry it free every other oil change. But while it was in the air for tranny fluid dump last weekend I did all 5 3000 miles early.

Before you run to look, picked mine up with 105K and no one ever greased them! The rear shaft has zerks protruding from the caps. All three should be in alignment, just jack it up to spin. The front is a PITA near the x-fer case.

I rotated the shaft and found an angle where I could just barley get the normal grease fitting on a hose to slip on from below. I had it at about 4:00 looking from the rear of the truck. It was the hardest one by far.

5 zerks on the driveline. 3 on the rear, 2 on the front.

I pump grease until I see old grease on all fours and clean grease coming out on atleast 1.

There are zero zerks on my 2018. I looked then had a shop look while they were in there and all sealed up

I've read that at some point Toyota started doing away with them. Which has me wondering if the 3rd Gen has them. Anyone willing to stop, drop, and roll under one at a traffic light to see? j/k;)

This makes me feel like the need to grease our drivelines isn't very pressing. If newer trucks don't even need new grease, what does the presence of zerks do to reduce U joint grease life?

My whole life was, if you have them grease them and I would each time I changed the oil. Takes no time

Installed my cheap LED light kit from Amazon https://a.co/d/4IFTJ9L
Happy with how bright everything is, and since I didn't have vanity/footwell/glove box lights I ended up with a bunch of extra LED bulbs

Also switched the LED in the auto window up/down switch and the one in the glovebox, completing the conversion of every single amber LED and incandescent bulb inside the truck :woot:

It was hard to tell what you actually get for the $5K+ price tranny except for it is heavy duty

Thanks for this. Made me lol haha!

On the zerk topic, there are two key ingredients. As machining tolerances improve and material quality improves, wear is reduced, so long as grease stays in and moisture stays out.

If either of the last two enter the equation, u-joints die. Unlike the trunion Cv-joints with loads of grease everywhere, u-joints have little spare grease and zero circulation.

Recap: It appears my 2010 lived 11 years without new grease. Compared to 1960 through 1990 where they maybe lived 35/55k that's impressive!!!

Let's not forget petroleum products are superior to the 70s and 80s.

Shop charged me 250 installed. Seemed like something worth paying someone to do
