Steering wobble

So yesterday I bought my first tundra 2003 ac 4x4 and it drives amazing but once I hit about 50-60mph the steering wheel vibrates considerably.

 

Jack it up and check the tightness of all the different parts in the front end. Given you said the shake is in the steering wheel, we know it’s likely up front.

Rock the drivers and passenger from tires up and down, and side to side.
if you feel play up and down, likely ball joints or wheel bearings.

If you feel play side to side, it’s probably tie rod ends or wheel bearing.

start there and report back.

 

Wheel balance to rule that out. Preferably road forced.

 

Take it to a wheel and tire shop for balancing.

Update your "One-line truck info" in your profile to indicate whether your truck is 2WD or 4WD, over here.

 

Since its speed based, it's very likely a tire balance issue rather than ball joint or tie rod, so start with that.

 

Why are you going around bumping old threads telling people to change their front dif oil?

@archemil, you're really going above and beyond but after reading the symptoms in the threads you replied in, I can assure you, front diff lubricant choice is not the issue in those cases. Stoked to hear it helped, a little bit, with yours and your boss' truck though. What year and make/model/cab type are they so we can understand if your tactic may apply?

If you had the diff fluid in there that long, you’re most likely not maintaining your truck like you should be doing. Yours probably came out like molasses if it was so old it caused a wobble.

@archemil , need to change your front diff oil, bro. Go back to calling elk or whatever crap you’re selling. Lame.

 

To be fair, how many of your front diffs are due a little attention? Cause my front diff oil is damn near 18 years old.

 

Unless you’re running your truck under water frequently, the chances your front diff oil has anything to do with tire wobble is pretty slim to zero. I bet @Mr.bee when you change your front diff oil, it looks just fine. Especially if you rarely use 4wd, like most. My 4wd use is occasional in the summer and a few times a month in the winter. When I changed my diff oil at 120k, it looked like new. Changed it again at 212k, also looked like new. Rear diff always looks horrible, it gets the most stress.

 

Looks like mine's 7mos old.

 

My 4x4 was engaged twice for the fist 20 years, but i turn it on about every other week now. No troubles.

 

I was surprised with how little I engage mine, outside of what Toyota recommends and occasional fishing-hole approach, you see the color of my front diff fluid at the start of the drain. Dunno dude.
