I understand tc lockup, but during acceleration in low gears? Never noticed anything like this on my 2019. Thought lockup only occurred in like 4th - 6th.

My 1992 BMW did this. Vehicles with electronic locking torque converters can do this at any time, typically locks quicker in low load situations when no torque multiplication is needed.

Old Tundra is very old school. It almost never locks the torque converter. Many modern vehicles will lock the converter from very low gears, 2nd and some even in 1st depending on load.

This is good to know. Thank you both. Makes me feel at ease a little more.

I would look into this symptom here:

    Throttle lag/surge | Toyota Tundra Forum (tundras.com)

There is alot of systems that are likely calibrated together that could lead to this symptom. Pedal tuning, TC clutch tuning, waste gate tuning, throttle tuning, valve body tuning...

on 2019+ the TC lock up is aggressive and almost the opposite of your statement. That is how they were able to get away with removing the aux cooler.

Toyota also has a TC lock up schedule that is unlocked, locked, and in between. All depending on several inputs from the vehicle.

Maybe that's why I didn't notice it. That and I had a B.A. Muffler exhaust and I loved hearing it, so I rarely putted a long.

I did that TSB update myself yesterday. I think it does drive much better. Also fixes the clunk on start up too.

I'm a ASM for Lexus Service dept. I can do any Toyota/Lexus TSB or recall that's software related with our TIS Techstream scantool.

Oh, so not just anyone can do their own. I have a PC version of TIS. Would I have to connect to their network to get the software?

I would say it's highly unlikely. You have to have a master Tech login to gain access to the updates in TIS. You can run a health check on the vehicle and see what updates or recalls are available. But once you try to select a download you have to have a master login to proceed.

Ok. Thanks. This should be a free update at the dealer correct?

Yes, just say the vehicle has a hesitation/lag when accelerating. They will perform the update for free .

Just got off the phone with service and the said they don't show any updates for my truck. My f-ing dealer ALWAYS seems to be behind. Motojunkie, would you have a TSB number or something?

They won't be able to tell you that on the phone just speaking to a Service Writer probably would not know. Just take it in have them write the truck up for the concern. When the tech runs a health check it will show a update for the transmission available. Quote the TSB

Well the service kept hanging up on me when I called back with the TSB #'s for them. So I contacted my salesman. He said those were for the certified Toyota techs to use for given issues. So I said make me an appointment. I've mentioned both of these things before the TSB came out and no one made notes or really acknowledged my issues. I have in our text messages where I tell him. Also he said that symptoms have to be replicated for them to do something about it. The clunking on cold start probably won't get replicated though. Thank you.

Anything done before the TSB came out for that issue the tech would have nothing to go on. Now that the new transmission logic update is available different story. If they give you any shit just ask to speak to the tech directly about it. The clunk on start up is part of that update as well.

Ok. I seen both issues had different TSB #'s. But 1 update resolves them both. That'll be good so maybe I won't have to leave it overnight.

    Rci skid plate,
Don’t compare different models and years. Manufactures will change things year to year with same equipment to see how it works out.

Hmmm… is it not a valid approach with Toyota to have them proactively apply the TSB to a Tundra before I drive it off the lot if I specifically request it? Reading the experiences here it sounds like I have to encounter the issue first (regardless of how critical it is) and then after they perform diagnostic they use the computer to tell the technician whether or not the TSB should be applied. I would prefer to have mitigation for all currently known issues before I drive the truck off the lot. My build date is in February, do they apply all currently known updates for the issues during build phase perhaps?

Yes you will be fine, any trucks built now will have the most current updated calibration from the factory.

I had all the symptoms described in this thread. Trans was really frustrating sounding like it's struggling or slipping up to 2.2k rpms until I hammer it on low speed hills tring to slowly accelerate. Truck is an April 22 build. Just had the reccomended software update posted here and all I can say is wow! Truck is night and day different. No clunk on cold starts so far either. I was told by the dealer first update was for the clunk. After that software install then the trans update was indicated so it sounded I needed two software updates. Why Toyota doesn't let people know about this one is strange. It really changed the way it drives.

This is good to hear. I take mine in today to hopefully get these same updates. I was getting pissed at the service dept because they were telling me there were no updates for my truck. Like was said before, you have to "have" an issue, take in in, then they have to replicate the issue. At least what my salesman told me too.

Just venting but I fu@&ing HATE going to the dealer service. Had an appointment. Got there on time. 45min before they attempt to diagnose. Tech drives it and confirms the hesitation and says "that's how all the new Tundras are" . Lady says he hooked it up but said there's no fix cause there was no cel on. Says there may be a recall down the road. Showed her the TSB and said tech showed her too and there's no fix. Waste of my GD time. Motojunkie, on my copy, it says basic diagnostic on both lines of work. Would that be any indication that they actually hooked it up? Also , service said it may be a slow roll out on the update. When was your truck built Motojunkie? Mine was May .

I read through the last few pages of the TSB. Everyone who's replied having the issues say they're getting updated. My truck is a non hybrid. Is there anywhere I can check what vin is affected? Shouldn't a short term subscription of TIS allow me to do this? Thanks!

Even though it makes more peak power, and more low end torque than your 5.7? Ok buddy...

Your dealer is just not good, try to go to another dealer. I just had TSB done yesterday without any pushback or test drives
