First want to express thanks to BlueBottle for posting/highlighting differences in 2016 vs 2018 front, park/turn, vehicle-wiring-harness connector pinout (https://www.tundras.com/threads/2018-tundra-led-headlight-wiring-info-with-diagrams.16225/).

This following post is an attempt to add some additional clarity.

    1. Info on de-pinning (i.e., disconnecting terminals) of the vehicle-wiring-harness connector. Per Toyota’s terminal/connector repair manual (link below) it is a Type E (see p.33) 1.8 waterproof female connector (see p.79). Specifically it is connector 90980-11020 shown on p. 100. Use a very small flat head screw driver as the “special tool” to remove the Terminal Retainer. Then to disconnect terminals from the connector following guidance provided on p. 43 for “waterproof type”.

        1. (For 0.64 1.8, 2.3, 2.3II, 4.8, 6.3 and 8.0 of Waterproof Type Connector)
      2. How-to Video URL: https://youtu.be/BPmW0E1Paeg
    2. Info on wiring of the vehicle-wiring-harness connector 90980-11020. It is different as pointed out by BlueBottle. Here’s some additional detail:

      1. The 90980-11020 is a female connector, thus pin numbering is left to right.

        1. 0c6J-uMn_ow53bpMuVdO05fZG5Q02vIAkRwf9ZIW_be3a0c317b92583168ca0059e09fe588a16ef9b5.jpg

        2. 2016 wiring: Pin 1 = V wire; Pin 2 = W-B wire; Pin 3 = P (for RH) / R (for LH)

        3. 2018 wiring: Pin 1 = P (for RH) / R (for LH); Pin 2 = V wire; Pin 3 = W-B wire

        4. Where V=Violet; P=Pink; R=Red; W-B=White w/ Black stripe.
      2. 2016 Detailed Info:

        1. 2016 bulb OEM: An amber 3157 double filament halogen bulb is used. The markup shows where the filament leads appear on the bulb connector.

          2. It can be seen the inner (traced red) leads go to the upper/smaller filament; and the outer (traced blue) leads go to the lower/larger filament.
        2. 2016 socket vehicle-side connector pinout. The following is consistent w/ 2016 wiring diagrams

          1. Pin 1 connects to inner filament input, which is the least-bright/(smaller coil) filament. (This is the inner socket contact oriented toward the bottom of the 11020 connector.) Where “inner” is more toward the center of the bulb.

          2. Pin 2 connects to common ground (the 2 socket contacts oriented toward the top of the 11020 connector)

          3. Pin 3 connects to outer filament input, which is the brighter/(larger coil) filament. (This is the outer socket contact oriented toward the bottom of the 11020 connector.) Where “outer” is more away from the center of the bulb.

    1. 2018 Detailed Info:

      1. 2018 bulb/socket wiring OEM: An amber 7443 double filament halogen bulb is used. There are a lot of options on how to connect the one leg of each filament to a common ground (6 possible combinations to be exact see https://bit.ly/3XWYqQQ minus 2 [can’t use both leads from a single filament]). However when one of these options for common ground is chosen for the socket design then the 3 pins on the connecter side of the socket is not arbitrary.

        2. It can be seen the inner (traced red) leads go to the upper/smaller filament; and the outer (traced blue) leads go to the lower/larger filament.
      2. 2018 pinout. I don’t have 2018 wiring diagram… so will reverse engineer (see verification of pinout pictures below in sub item iv.)

        1. Pin 1 connects to outer filament input, which is the brighter/(larger coil) filament. (This is the outer socket contact oriented toward the bottom of the 11020 connector.) Where “outer” is more away from the center of the bulb.

        2. Pin 2 connects to inner filament input, which is the least-bright/(smaller coil) filament. (This is the inner socket contact oriented toward the bottom of the 11020 connector.) Where “inner” is more toward the center of the bulb.

        3. Pin 3 connects to common ground (the 2 socket contacts oriented toward the top of the 11020 connector)

    Appreciate the kind words Jeff5.7!

Just want to Note: This applies to 2018 Toyota Tundra Headlight Assembly (which I think remained the same up to 2021).

These videos are about a 2016 Tundra with 2018 Headlight Assemblies installed. To make this installation easy, the following conversion wiring harness was used: https://automotivecustomlighting.com/store/toyota-tundra-oem-led-conversion-2014-2020/ (currently $106).

These 3 vidoes show the bulb swap (to Alla product) and verifies no hyperflash.

Alla replacement LED bulb URL: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B09184277K/ (currently $39). Makes for cost effective conversion to LED.

These two videos discuss/show power source & draw for 2018 LED perimeter lights:

    P2 - https://youtu.be/Sk270j7VL0o (shows the final result).

    One final note:
The information provided in this post is specifically for a 2016 Toyota Tundra with Halogen Type DRLs, operation of which is described on p. 191 of owner’s manual (shown below). In 2014-2017 there were two different DRL solutions: Either 1) The OEM Halogen Type DRLs that light up the amber signal light (red arrow); or 2) the LED Type DRLs that light up the LED strip on lower perimeter of the OEM headlights (blue arrow).

I've read it twice but I'm not understanding the purpose of this thread.
Is it to upgrade to OEM LED headlights, or to run LED bulbs on your halogen headlight DRL/turn signals..

    Purpose:

BLUF: Each front turn/drl connector has two 12V input wires and one ground. in a 2016, these must be moved to the correct location in the vehicle-side connector for the 2018 light socket to work. Final state wiring needed to operate the 2018 light socket is shown here for LH-side connector:
    upload_2023-1-27_16-14-2.jpg
    1. To successfully use 2018 headlight assemblies in 2014-2017 tundra, rewiring must be done. This is well known.
    2. This post covers how to rewire the OEM turn/DRL halogen light vehicle-side connector to be compatible with the 2018 bulb socket; (with rationale).
      1. The 2016 socket cannot be used because, although the connector side is the same as the 2018, the diameter on the socket side of the 2016 is too big to fit the 2018 headlight assembly/housing.
      2. Must change location of wires in the vehicle's harness connector as noted in the thread [to be: Pin 1 = P (for RH) / R (for LH); Pin 2 = V wire; Pin 3 = W-B wire]
    3. If this rewiring isn't done, the common ground pinout in the 2018 socket/connector design collides with what the vehicle implements as a 12V input.
      1. Result is hyperflash turn signal when headlights are off and non-op when headlights are on.
    4. Once the relocation of wires is done:
      1. the 2018 socket/bulb works the same as did the 2016 socket/bulb
      2. can optionally replace halogen bulb with LED 7443 compatible bulb (with no hyperflash if the replacement bulb has built-in resister)
      3. Now the 2016 truck has both the 2018 LED perimeter DRLs and the original pre-2018 OEM DRL function in the amber turn signal (as shown here):
