Second board is in, both read the cluster, I found a guy on UPWORK that is writing the code.

It's a big day! We have interaction between the truck & new cluster. It sees the tach & is getting 4HI & water temp and a few other CAN signals from the truck!

This just happened! @Jeff_5_7 is my hero, the truck is in 4HI, ABS & traction will go away when I restart or I may need to reset 0 point calibration. I can't use it yet as my breadboard is dying, I have a permanent board & 5V converter coming from Amazon tomorrow.

Cluster is in, working at 90% function (have a few false errors)

Do you envision this can be made plug and play for others (with the purchase of the cluster, bezel, and a custom adapter board)?

I am colorblind and had "a lot of fun" wiring with Crutchfield my Kenwood radio --- that was "soooo much fun" lol.

Thanks for all of your work on this!

There is no part of this that can be P&P. I had to build the harness that is super color-intensive & some wire colors in the wire diagram were different. Then there is sourcing the parts, it took me almost a year to find a junk yard cluster, new is 5-600 the upper dash, different hazard switch and stop start keyless switch were over 600 (new) the keyless switch is currently just filling the hole.

Then the hard part: The computer that is doing the translation. First you have to solder it and the CAN together & then need the code which belongs to Jeff_5_7. I'd be looking at a pretty but useless cluster without him.

The potential for a plug and play kit does exist but I would say we are far from that. Everything I and @e30cabrio have working so far is done on prototype boards and patch harnesses. As stated 90% of everything is working but still some bugs to flush out.

The problem is this is expensive and cost add up quick. Not many wrecked 2018-2021 trucks so clusters are hard to find. Everyone would need a patch harness made with a data converter inline and a coded program to run it. These can be made it would just be time consuming. I think it would be a few hundred $ cost to buy a patch harness with the data conveter in it. It would take me money in parts and several several hours to build each one.

The "patch harness" would make the cluster operation plug and play, however still some issues. You would need trim pieces for the new cluster to install and look right. Maybe the biggest problem is lack of steering wheel controls to run the display on the new cluster. I have a 2018 steering wheel swap so I do have full function of all display screens. (Looking at options here)

Other things like new hazzard button and ingtion button on the new trim piece could be addressed but it all adds up slowly. I would say easily $500 for a used cluster and patch harness which would be the main parts. Then more smaller stuff to finailze it all.

What's the hardware look like? I'm guessing two Teensies, each with a CAN card, for incoming and outgoing. If so, how are they linked - SPI?

Also, with that many messages to filter and modify, is the uC on the incoming able to keep up? Does the Teensy card support hardware level filtering?

One Teensy with two CAN channels. It seems to keep up pretty well. I read everything in from the truck on Channel 1, catch the frames I want, modify them and send them out on Channel 2. Additionally I read in everything on Channel 2 and pass it out on Channel 1 (data from cluster to truck). Also have a small function that sends a generated message out from the micontroller at a specifided time interval.

That's awesome. Legitimately surprised. I didn't think a single uC was going to be able to keep up with that much software filtering and 'full-duplex' comm.

Honeslty thinking about cutting it down to one channel only and just injecting new messages into the bus. All of the IDs of the modifided data are "new" so sending it all on the bus, the other ECUs will just ingore it.

Doing this would be simplier but would have one Bus with ALL messages. For example the cluster would actually see the Old RPM signal and the New RPM signal. It would only react to the new signal since the new address is where it is looking. It would just ingore the old signal

You'd have to try and characterize the bus load and see if that would increase chances for contention. May not be worth it since the 14s+ have so much more traffic.

*Edit: forgot this is on a 2.0 model. You'd probably be ok.

Last few days have been wiring the steering wheel controls, I bought another in a series of steeringwheels and it came today, it's in great condition but is for a Tacoma so the switch connector does not work.I have a 2020 Sequoia wheel coming tomorrow so that better be the end of that. I gave it the full leather cleaning/rejuvination since it's sitting & waiting for switches.

How hard is it to change the wheel. I’ve gone to a couple of shops they said it would be extremely expensive to swap

As long as you get the right switches it's plug & play, I keep getting Tacoma wheels that have a different clockspring connection.

The wheels themselves drop right in from 4Runners, Tacomas, Sequoias Tundras etc.

I'm going to sell two wheels I have, one is in very good condition, the other not so much.

That is why I have not finished my air tank & bags & do as much as I can when it's "only" in the high 90s at 4am. It's been humid the last week too which I really hate, if I never go back to Hawaii I'm good with that!

Here is the final wheel/switch config.

It's calculating MPG again from being out, I was hammering it this entire trip, if I was getting more than 7mpg I'd be shocked.

    Love this 2020 Tacoma/4Runner wheel.
