I regeared last year to 5.29s and i was on 295/70/18s (34.3x11.5). It made towing our 5500lb travel trailer so much easier thru the texas hill county.
Stock gears and 295s - i had to tow in S4 and it would drop down to 3rd and sometimes 2nd gear when going up hills. Trans temp would climb up in the 230s and run around 215
5.29s with the 295s - i could tow in S5 on the highway at 70mph easy and just downshift to 4th for hills, 3rd if i really pushed it. I had the power to pass and a lot better acceleration. Trans temps would stay between 190-200
5.29 and 37s - i tow in S4 now and still have good power to accelerate. It does down shift to 3rd for larger hills. Trans temps stay between 195-203. I have tried S5 and it ends up shifting down to 4 for shallow grades or any acceleration, plus trans temps go up.
I recently put on air bags as my leafs are showing signs of flattening out, happened after a 3k mile road trip towing, i have a 1k lbs WDH too.

I was really happy with their work and their price. Great group of guys. I paid $2200 OTD on a 4x4. I looked up the thread on tacoma world and someone asked about Tundras. Sounds like they'll do $2050 on a 4x4 Tundra as part of the group buy with Revolution, Nitro, or Yukon gears. This is a really good deal if you ask me. I also know they get people driving in from out of state for the work. If someone somehow gets the group buy to spill into this forum, you all might get a better price than $2050 with more buyers.

just plan on stopping often for the 500 miles break in period. Or get the REM polishing for another $300.

Can you re-gear the rear end to a higher gear? For example 3.73 or 3.23?

Fair enough, my knowledge of gearing isn't great. This is good to know.

Don’t forget that the transmission is a double overdrive. 4th gear is 1:1

I think tundras without the tow package had 4.10 gear instead of 4.30. You could swap diffs with a junk truck. I believe 3.90 was also available on V6 models but the axles are different.

I wouldn't recommend it though. The toyota 6 speed has a double overdrive that is higher than other 6 speeds and especially 4 speed transmissions from years past. 6th gear in the toyota is 0.58 versus around 0.67 I think on GM 6 speed. A old GM 4 speed overdrive was 0.70.

Grimmjeeper.com has a gearing calculator that you can play around with that is way more informative than those stupid gearing charts that always get posted.

Also, don’t be afraid to rev it. The valve train lends itself to the higher rpm’s

3/2 Lift Gear Double Pump rims 295/70r18 Nitto Terra Grappler G2s
Check out Nitto Terra Grappler G2s 295/70r18 S116. They are P rated, 50 lbs tires, that will not need re-gearing. They are light enough that you will only lose .25 to .5 MPG as compared to stock.

Necro but I think this is good info.

I reached out to this shop today about the group buy for the $2000 regear and they are still doing it. I put a deposit of $400 down to lock in the deal and made my appt for January to give me time to decide what gears I want. This is a great deal and Miguel said they would do the needle bearing free if you buy the part or have them buy it. Said it's a half day job.

I been leaning toward 4.88 since I don't tow and don't plan on going bigger than bfg 35s, but he said most people do the 5.29s now. Need to make a decision by mid December. I kind of want to do the polishing too but he said it's really only for the break in period. I'm going with the revolution gears since he said they are the same as nitro just quieter.

The $500 parts and labor warranty for 10 years sounds pretty amazing considering the shop is 15 minutes from my house.
