    Yep very much this...

went out and ran the truck hard today and couldnt get pan temps above 229.

    103 to 105 ambient.

Oil temps ran right along with trans temps.

Your engine oil temp ran at 229 with the trans temp?

5.7 does not have a oil temp sensor, it’s an inferred value, if this is that then oil temp is probably this if that makes sense. It’s always 1-2 deg below tranny pan temp from my experience. Suspect it’s lower, probably coolant temp.

This is my pic from my truck. No trailer, no bed weight. Just driving on a flat highway with a headwind. I do this drive weekly and have hit 250 but was too busy to snap a pic.

    yep.

coolant temps at 203-204 in heavy repeated acceleration like hot lapping at the track. 4-5 0-80 runs and 4-5 60-80 runs. And a few 0-95 runs all in Short succession.

ram 5.7 hits 248-252 on engine oil temp. High alarm is 265 on those.

not concerned about engine oil temp.

Trans temps seemed to be under control with heavy acceleration in high ambient temps. Tc temps would shoot up and then drop on lock up with only minor increase in pan temps.

Trans temps quickly move up to 220-225 range but took lots of heavy loads to get up to 229.

if it’s the case that fluids are good to 280 and high temp alarm is 302 then I’m ok.

however if I was towing at full capacity I’d likely add a cooler.

I was towing tonight thinking about this thread a bit.

If the shoe was on the other foot, and my new truck I just paid good money for had the transmission high temp warning message come on, can’t say I wouldn’t be a little upset (especially at half of the tow rating).

I took some video tonight of converter lockup, temps, and what not. Let me know if you all want to see them. It’s not a Tundra, so totally get that if you don’t.

And thats what I was saying in a previous post, if it happens and you are towing, hauling whatever within the specs that Toyota says then take it to a dealer, have it checked out and documented. Its the only way to have Toyota solve what could be a potential issue.

I would have already installed the cooler and been done with it or sold my Tundra and purchased something else. I’m not brand loyal and just need the best tool for the job at hand. On the flip side, I was pretty happy to have my CPO warranty on my 2012 Tundra (front differential replacement, had the cam tower leak, front wheel bearing). The dealership started blaming my Bilstein 6112 shocks on the lowest setting for the front diff issues. I politely reminded them about how a TRD Pro has a factory 2” lift and they backed off.

Wish there was a perfect truck/car/boat etc that would do everything with perfection. Unfortunately there isn’t and owners have to make their own decisions. If you think my current truck is factory, you would be wrong. I know the weak spots on the Duramax powered trucks (no lift pump) and resolved them.

No worries...also meant to mention new Rams thermostat is 203F and unloaded in high ambient temps they hit 228-235F.

I installed a cooler on my 19 and when towing 6000lbs my pan temp is generally in the 190-200 range unless crawling a steeper mountain grade then I've seen it hit around 205. The convertor temps run in the 190-225 range and the 225 drops like a rock with the convertor locked once you've crested the hill. Unloaded the pan sits pretty much a constant 185.

Absolutely nothing new I can add here, except:

Well, I got a few of my own..." :D

Sorry if I missed it earlier in this thread but did you measure your temps while towing that same trailer on the same route before adding the cooler?

That's a b&m 70274 cooler. My son drew up a bracket for me using autocad and I had it cut at a local place. It's based off of nicks design. It's made from standard steel 1/8", I did go have it powder coated as well to deal with any rust issues.
Yes I did use all toyota factory up to the cooler.

I'm in Canada other wise I would have just gone with his package deal.

The pan temp was high 240's and that was with temps at around 16c. Only went for half an hr round trip to see before installing the cooler, not the same route but did go over some grades.

Installed Nick's Cooler kit with the Toyota Thermostat and lines to the cooler. Was running pan temps of 217F ambient 80s unloaded, TC near 230F. Pan temps were 230F towing a 3500lb boat/trailer/motor, 3 adults, and about 300lb of luggage, gear, etc.. with TC temps spiking at 249F pre-cooler install.

After the Cooler installed I'm running 186F in 80s ambient temps with the thermostat unpinned. I have not had a chance to tow the boat yet but 230F pan and 249F TC peaks are too high for my liking only towing a 3500lb boat and 3 adults and gear. I'm very pleased with the cooler installed and pan temps at 186F in mid to high 80s ambient temps unloaded. A 30F drop in pan temp has to be an improvement for transmission life from everything I've' read and increase the fluid life.

I do live in a northern weather climate so the cooler will likely not be doing anything towing my snowmobile trailer in 0-30F temps but the warmer puck is in place to bring the transmission to operating temps quicker with the transmission heat scavenging from the engine radiator coolant. I'm not sure at what temp the transmission coolant thermostat opens, but the cooler is hot to the touch when the pan temp is at 186F after a 30min highway run. I suspect if partially starts opening if not fully opened at the 186F pan temps.

Well shoot, now I’m concerned about trans temps. Will be towing a unloaded 3500 lb. v nose from central Texas to Southern California upcoming weekend. Return trip will be loaded to 7100 lb... I figured the truck had an external cooler! Even though I had never seen it. I am for sure putting the original tires back on the thing before I go, no need for useless additional rotational weight to further exacerbate the trans temp.
I have never had the trans temp warning come on while driving 70+ mph on the highway with 34.6s un-geared in the summer heat so I figured I was good.

Do y’all see a potential issue with trans temps in my future?

Get one of those Bluetooth OBD2 readers and keep an eye on it. There are things you can do like keep it in S4 but you will probably be fine.

Not offended, but i disagree with the beatings. This is a fairly new (uncovered) potential problem, not like an oil or tire size thread. But that's just me. :notsure:
