I have been told that I need new pads and the rotors are "OK but need resurfacing". I understand the pads but the brakes make no noise and find it hard to believe (this coming from dealership) concerning the rotors. 20K miles on TRD Pro 2017.

I'm having UCA put on Thursday by an off-road shop I think very highly of. What do you think?

They're probably lying to you. Mine lied to me about the same time for brakes. I ended up going 70,000 before I needed either. There are few good people left that do honest work anymore.

aren't the rotors covered by 36K warranty ? seems kinda low mileage for new ones

Not if they're wore out. Wear items aren't covered when they wear out.

Assuming you have actually worn through your pads already; yes a resurfacing of the rotors would be best practice. A new set of pads will work best on a true and flat set of rotors.

Have your shop look at them. I have 113,000 on my 2017 still original pads.

Unless you're in constant stop and go traffic and are very serious abuser of brakes... I don't possible see how it could happen myself. I mean there is so much brake material on the pad its is very hard for me to believe. Like I said, my dealer lied to me. All of them lie from what I can tell.

Pads should last at least 50k under terrible conditions. How much pad is left?

Did you ask them to show you the inspection report so it's in writing? They usually have those red/yellow/green boxes they'll check off. Or give you mm measurements.

So I was told there was 1mm left by the dealership. I just heard back from the off-road shop and said it sounds odd and that they typically do the rotors every other time they do the pads. They said they would look and they will call me if they need to be done. Tires are coming off to do the UCAs, so I would rather have them do the brakes as well. The UCAs are another story. Put 35's Ko2 and hit the body mount by around 1 cm. I'm hoping the SPCs give me just enough to clear the mount.

PS went with 17"+25 Icon six speeds with CB pro kit and thought I would make without UTC and/or a chop. The same exact set up, year, model, tire, pro kit and even color... made it with Methods +25. I don't know. Go figure.

Regardless I wouldn't have them machined, just replace.

I always go over 100,000 even towing. I am a light braker and lots of hwy. Ex could not make it to 30. I use to tell her there is a 3rd pedal between the gas and the brake

Have you looked at the pads yourself to do an assessment on whether you need new pads?

Not impossible. Especially if you (or someone who drives the truck) rides the hell out of the brakes.

Is there any wobble while braking? If so, turn them.

i cant remember exact mileage, but it was around 30k for me on my 2016 when i was getting a lot of wheel wobble / shake on braking. dealer at first wanted to take it for a test ride, but i guess when they took the wheel off they said they could see enough turn in the rotor that they got them machined right then and there. this was front rotors only. at my most recent oil change 50k they came out to me and said pads were 3-4mm all four corners and in the 'yellow / red' area on that color chart and i needed all four corners rotors and pads with rears of utmost importance

I'm a little over 40k miles tow through mountain grades frequently and have over 50% left on the original pads. Either they are trying to cheat you or there is another issue causing such drastic and premature wear.

    THIS right here. ^^^^

I'm at 58,500 miles (I bought it new from the dealer) and have 3/4's of the pads left on the front.

I've never (I've had 7 new Toyotas) experience brake pad wear like what's being described. I've always (trucks, Celica, Sequoia, Avalons) been 100,000 miles before I needed to keep more careful track of the wear.

In my case I’ve checked myself. I saw their millimeter measurements, but that’s why when the service writer was like so what can we get done today I was like uhhh nothing. You can finish the oil change and I’ll check it out later. Having no issues with shaking / wobbling or stopping for that matter. They also said my battery was about to die since I had 585 CCA when they tested and I should change that out. We’ve been sub 35 for weeks and I’ve had no trouble turning over the truck

I will let you know if the dealership took me for a ride or not tomorrow. I will have her on a lift by noon. I appreciate the input gentlemen. Thank you.

My pads lasted until 76k before I needed new pads.

However, I had to have the front rotors turned at 17k and 35k. Then I replaced them at 76k and turned the rears.

I also think I am a hard on brakes. Sometimes I drive it like I did my Z06 on track days. Probably doesn't help.

This sounds a lot like my experiences so far and driving habits .. I’ve made the truck full circle started driving with a 2000s Silverado long bed, graduated to a WRX, then V8 S4, then TDI Q5 and when I got t-boned in that had just become a homeowner so to the Tundra it was .. I think I picked up some sporty driving habits in the middle of things

There was a thread* about this. A lot of other owners, including myself, had to replace their rotors around the 30k mark.

I’m not sure when I started hanging on tundras.com in regards to mileage .. I had signed up on tundratalk first .. I will say I’ve spent a lot more money since I’ve become more active here lol .. and I’m at 52k miles now
