    Researching 1st Gen
    Hi All,

I already have a 1st gen Tacoma and an 80 series Land Cruiser, but I've got a new itch for a 1st gen Tundra. Not looking to get rid of either of the other two, but to add to the collection. This doesn't seem like rational thought any way I try to spin it so figured I'd join the site and surely there would be some spin doctors here that could help convince me this is the right thing to do.

I'm thinking 1st gen just because they can be found reasonably priced, I expect easy enough to work on (I am no mechanical wizard) and because I just think it's cool to have the 1st generation. I'll be perusing the forums looking for pros and cons. If anyone wants to shoot me some ideas of particular threads to read through that would be greatly appreciated.

    Welcome from TX!

Only drawback for me and Gen 1's is the timing belt, costly maintenance item. The 5.7 and 4.6 engines in Gen 2 & 3 have chains.

Thanks. Good info there. But it's the non interference just like the 3.4 in the Tacoma right? I know I can look this up but I thought I read that there was an option for the 4.6 on the 1st Gen? Lots of reading to do. Maybe done so much already I've confused myself.

I'm in Houston also. Well my home is Houston but work and spend most of my time in Corpus Christi now.

I cannot verify 4.6 in Gen 1, but they did put some 4.7's in the 2007's as they evolved. Not sure if later Gen 1 would have 4.6 when they were still making 4.7 for early Gen 2.

Non interference sounds right but cannot confirm.

This information is a couple years old, but it's still valid.
The 4.6 is Gen 2 only.

    Welcome, you must have one.

First gen only have 4.7 for V8, there are also V6 available and even some V6 with manual trans.

    The 99-04 have the 245hp 315tq V8 and 4 speed auto
There are some hard to find 00-03 with the supercharger, adds about 100hp and 100tq.
    The 05-06 have the 271hp 313tq V8 and 5 speed auto

03-04 have two notable improvements over prior models, they have larger front calipers and a stronger transmission.

    Double cabs are only 04-06.

    Welcome fellow first genner!
More Toyotas is always a good thing. I've got multiple Toyotas too. Tacomas, 4Runner, Tundra... all 1st Gens! 4.7 is an interference engine. Timing belts are to be changed every 90,000 miles.

Welcome from St. Barts South Coast! These 1st Gens can be maintenance hogs. Bake in the front suspension rebuild before buying as they get real tired in the 130k range.

I haven't been in Corpus long enough to have an opinion on the place. Still learning my way around. I do know that apparently I am required to have some fishing gear.

In my case, I had a local shop do the front suspension work. For the other DIY items, I shop either ToyotaPartsDeal or Big Gurl from Brasil sites. I keep it mostly OEM on all the suspension/mechanicals/maintenance. Will stray to OE on other items that make economical sense.

165,000+ on my '02... the front suspension is solid.
I do take great care of the tires & shocks, so that must be why it's still solid.
