Also I was reading this thread and someone mentioned carrier bearing. So while I was under there I shook the drive shaft center support bearing and there was quite a bit of play. Also the rubber was split in a few spots. The drive shaft also seemed to be sagging in the support bearing. Here is a picture below. Your thoughts?

Yeah buddy. Grease those zerks. The carrier bearing is ok unless it starts wobbling and vibrating. When that happens change out your yokes and u-joints with new. In the meantime, grease the zerks. Should be 5.

Anyone know the factory specs on allowable ‘play’ on these carrier bearing housings?

Thanks for the reply. I could easily shake the drive shaft at the carrier bearing. After looking some more, this may be where all the vibration and shaking is coming from?

Didn't see any zerks while down there (wasn't really looking) Man, I really hope this is the issue I've been chasing! Seems like an easy enough project for a Saturday or Sunday.

I can't find a good diagram of the drive shaft. There are 3 U-joints and @Professional Hand Model said yokes (...?) Is there anything else I should replace while I have the drive shaft apart?

    Thanks alot,
    Dan

Just change the carrier bearing and u-joints with zerk-able replacements. You can remove the drive shaft and take it up to a place that specializes in propeller shafts and they will put your parts on as they have a special press for the joints. Do not go cheapie on the carrier bearing and buy the Toyota OEM. Watch youtube about it.

Let us know if you find out the factory play in that new bushing. Mine has some play at 157k, but no problems with vibration.

When you replaced the steering rack bushings did you tourqe everything to spec? They need to be much tighter than I originally thought and tightening it all tightened my steering up a lot.

When I replaced the bushings things definitely got better. I will go back and double check the torques though

    Thanks,

123 ft lbs on that top bolt isn't easy but I finally got the wrench to click. Just enough clearance under the tranny pan to clear the torque wrench handle .

Got the new tires and wheels on. Still doing the shake/vibrate thing but not nearly as much.

Guess I'll move on the to carrier bearing when I can. Rain this weekend.

    Comments and suggestions appreciated

    Best,
    Dan

Good to hear that the new wheels and tires helped the shaking.

Are you still have a steering issue at highway speeds?

Is the shaking in the steering wheel or more in the seat?

Can you post your allignment specs?

I had the exact same vibration and it ended up being my carrier bearing on the driveshaft.

Still slight back and forth movement in steering wheel. Used to be at 65 mph now it seems it's doing it at 45 to 50 mph with the new tires.

There is also vibration throughout the cab. Water bottle in the cup holder is constantly shaking etc.

Here's a pic of the alignment sheet from the alignment I got 2 or so weeks ago...

    Looks great!

    Your alignment numbers look good.

Can you take a video of your steering rack and tie rods when you turn the wheel side to side with wheels on the ground. This will show you where the play in the steering wheel is coming from.

Carrier bearing replacement helped tremendously with mine, but I've still got a vibration somewhere.....i'm still enjoying chasing gremlins and replacing worn out parts at 214k lol.

It looks like last login from @Dragracingdan was back in September 2018. Can't even properly tag him on here anymore. I doubt he's gonna be answering y'all any time soon. Hopefully it wasn't something bad resulting from the wobble.
