Why a Tundra over an F150?

I am in the market for a new truck. I have been a Toyota guy and own a 85 pickup and a 2000 Camry. My wife has a Rav4. The Camry is my daily driver and it's time to upgrade. I was 99.8% sure wanted a Tundra.....until I drove the F150.

I was looking at a Tundra sr5 crewmax with the TRD package and convenience package.

As a comparison I then drove an F150 xlt supercrew with the 5L v8 and they seemed pretty nice. I can get a factory elocker and sync3 seems better than entune. Sync3 comes with Android auto and Waze which would be nice. The F150 also has 110v outlets in the cab, more USB ports, has rear under seat storage, gets better mpg, and has better safety scores from IIHS.

As of right now the only things the Tundra offers over the F150 is TSS-P and the rear window. I wanted to say the Tundra is more reliable but the cam tower oil leak issue is making me have second thoughts on that, especially the cost to fix it.

Is these something I am missing with the Tundra and why it would be a better choice? Which ever I pick I will be keeping the truck for 10 years. Why did you guys pick the Tundra over other trucks?


ETA: I am getting the Tundra. The only problem is due to work I will have to wait another week to pick it up.

I'm on my fourth Tundra. All I've ever had to do was general maintenance. So that's why I bought another Tundra and keep buying Toyota products. I have friends with Fords and I can't say I've heard such good stories for reliability. Plus the resale values of Toyotas are very strong. Best of luck to you on your new truck choice.

 

First off welcome from Ohio! The cost to fix the other trucks alot more than the Tundra is one reason, resale, all the other fancy stuff in the others is just more crap to go wrong.

I drove Toyota trucks from 1997 until early 2012 when I traded my Tacoma for my first full size truck...a new 2011 eco boost F150. Less than a year into ownership it was obvious build quality was not even close to Toyota standards. With 20k miles on the clock my engine blew while traveling 75mph down the freeway in Kansas in the middle of the night. What an effing nightmare! A week later I had my truck back and a brand new engine. During my 3rd year of ownership I had countless electrical problems. Weird shit with the heater/AC, and stereo and a few others. Then one day driving home from work I got a ton of error codes and lights in the dash and no longer had 1st and 6th gear. Limped home and when I restarted my truck everything had cleared. That was it for me. My factory warranty had just run out and I was not prepared to start paying for repairs. I traded in less than 2 weeks later for my Tundra.

BUILD QUALITY and RELIABILITY are the top 2 reasons I will drive Toyotas for the rest of my life!

I’ve been looking at Raptors. Got to spend the day with one, they are very nice, and the Bang and Olufsen system impressed the crap out of me. 550hp with a tune is neat as well.

 

I got anxiety driving my F150 past the AAA 100 mile free tow range. There’s no way in hell I’d take it out to the middle of the freaking desert. The cam tower leak probably happens to less than 1% of Tundras. By the time the warranty ends, that F150 will already be in the scrapyard. And our Tundras will still be worth $30k.

 

I was looking for one too as I really like Raptors. I wanted something for the long haul (no more one night stand) so I picked up a Tundra and now building Raptor Beater.

 

I drove a 5 liter F150 before getting my Tundra. I liked it a lot, and I’m on my 7th Toyota truck now. (I get bored easily)

My reason for not buying the Ford is how much I hate the trucks I have at work. Constantly having issues and they suffer from poor build quality.

I have the cam tower leak and it’s getting fixed later this month under warranty. Yeah, that kind of sucks, but I’m confident it will be fixed right based on the number of positive experiences here after it was repaired.

Only Ford I would buy is the Raptor. But, $$$.

Yeah, I still buy Tundras, and while mine is not a Raptor beater, it’s no slouch. The lack of tech in the Tundra is a problem, needs to be less of a gap in that regard.

I know interior finish and tech in raptor is way ahead. I guess that’s why my electrical upgrades not ending in Tundra.

 

About 2 years before I bought my Tundra I was in serious talks with dealers (I did the email bidding war thing) and was extremely close to pulling the trigger on a 2016 XLT with the 5.0. I drove everything except for a RAM and thought the F150 rode the nicest and had the best interior and features. Looks are obviously subjective. I think part of the reason I didn't consider a Tundra very seriously was because I drove an SR5, which just feels extra-cheap. The SR5 really doesn't match up well with the XLT. I literally had an "I'll take it" reply all drafted up to send to a dealer, but I ended up holding off.

I did some more research between then and last September and decided I didn't want to constantly worry about reliability. Most of the publications (Motor Trend, Car & Driver, etc.) get it right about the Tundra's features and powertrain compared to the Big 3, but of course they rarely, if at all, mention reliability/dependability. I'm glad I waited, because the 2018 Tundra did add some really nice features like the LED headlights, newer/better guage cluster, and Safety Sense. I can see why people give the Tundra so much crap, but if you are sick and tired of worrying about going back to your dealer for service and repairs it's hard to go wrong with a Tundra.

 

I know this poll isn't very "scientific", but I'm sure it's a bit more than 1%.

I’m deeply involved with Ford due to me being the responsible engineer for a part we sell to them. Let’s just say it isn’t too pretty. I’ve seen vehicles that have been in 10+ times all within first 10k miles. I’ve seen at least 3xs where customer has been refunded payments. Granted it’s all for various reasons. And it’s always luck you may get a car that is perfect, you never know. But when it comes to Toyota vs Ford Quality, the nod goes Toyota.

 

the cam tower leak is annoying but most of us got it repaired under warranty and as @Sean266 said, it won't leave you stranded. Some trucks were never fixed and they run fine.

 

Having previously owned an ‘07 King Ranch I was sold on Ford. Until I went to look at them seriously. Every single truck on the lot had a dealer markup of at least $5k. Platinums, KR’s and Lariats were closer to $10k...I couldn’t believe the audacity and never looked back. So far I like my SR5 and for the price, I can’t complain too much.

 

When I was looking I was getting offers for $10k off right off the bat without even really trying. I got closer to $12k off sticker on the deal I was about to take. No way you're getting anywhere near that much off on a Tundra.

 

I owned 3 Fords before I made the switch to Toyota. My 94 Explorer blew trans at 60K miles, Merc. Mountaineer blew at 80K, and my '07 King Ranch made it to 90K. It had a leaking exhaust manifold from almost new. I had the trans replaced, and within a month the second trans went. Along with the trans went the power control module, wiring harness, and master computer. After a 50 mile tow home it was bye-bye Ford.
The only issue I had with my'13 Tundra was the cam tower leak, and that was fixed under warranty. I traded it with 51K miles on my '18 and got $30K for it.
Reliability and resale are why I'll stick with Toyota.
