Tundra engine recall - interesting news

Block, Short Assembly - 11410-F9160 - MSRP $3,654.58

So a short block assembly WITHOUT any labor to install it.
Most short assembly builds also include heads, cams, front covers, turbos, etc.

Total for a short block rebuild will be in the range of $22,000-$24,000 just in parts cost.

Even if a dealer were able to get an FTS to agree to a Partial Engine Assembly - (i-FORCE - 19000-F4030 - MSRP $20,108.56, i-FORCE MAX - 19000-F4040 - MSRP $22,222,97) - the cost is still about the same from a parts perspective. Labor is where the costs differ greatly.

The recall alone is going to cost them no less than $2 BILLION. Remember, they are also having to cover the cost of towing if needed, loaner cars and their depreciation, maintenance on loaner cars, etc. There are a number of costs that we simply don't see, nor would Toyota ever come out and say it. To think that each engine replacement is $5,000 is one of the most laughable things I've seen you or anyone else write in the last decade.

For those who had a failure before the recall remedy was announced, it added up to about $3,000-$4,000/month in loaner car costs, not to mention the towing costs if they were out of state. The aforementioned former member had mentioned it was $10,000 worth of loaner car costs before Toyota ultimately bought his truck back. That was 3.5 months worth of loaner car costs to Toyota.

You seem to read from very interesting places as they are not at all based in reality most of the time. I would suggest you actually study up on the part costs and labor costs involved in doing one of these.

13.5 hrs x $180 (common shop rate) = $2,430 per recall engine replacement
$2,430 x 102,898 (total with Lexus) = $250,042,140 LABOR COSTS

EDIT: Warranty rate seems to be a little less than $180. Somewhere around $130.

13.5 hrs x $130 = $1,755
14.2 hrs x $130 = $1,846

$1,755 x 102,898 = $180,585,990 if all were 4x2
$1,846 x 102,898 = $189,949,708 if all were 4x4

The 14.2 is for the 4x4. It is supposedly a longer book time for the recall remedy installation.

 

How is my math "terrible"? I'm pretty sure $500 million divided by 100K equals $5K.

Those are the numbers I've read from reputable sources, but I doubt anyone here knows what Toyota's actual costs are. Dealership invoices are entirely different, of course.

 

Fair enough, I stand corrected. I just recalled reading the $500 million figure thrown out when the recall was first announced.

I've never bought an extended warranty on any vehicle, but I'm sure glad I changed my ways on this Gen 3. Something tells me it was money well spent.

New news: another 2025 ate a bearing as reported on Facebook. So, it’s a fact that Toyota hasn’t fixed this defect yet and there is no “safe build date” either. Toyota is still offering a 12 month, 12K miles warranty on short and long blocks while Ford is offering a 10 year 150K mile warranty on their defective motors. Also a fact: both short blocks and long blocks (crate motors used for the recall) have experienced the same failure for a second time. When Toyota steps up and offers a 10 year 150K warranty, you’ll know they’re confident they’ve actually fixed the problem. Until then, with the 12/12K warranty it’s all just Lipstick on a pig IMO.

I am not out to ruin anyone's "experience" with their truck and I am glad your wind noise is getting fixed. Your posts about how much better your truck is and how Toyota will take care of everything a sounds like it came straight from a Toyota influencer. I understand there’s problems. Which Toyota is owning up to and fixing. I’ve been on Ford forums, GM forums, and Ram forums. I can tell you there’s a TON more horror stories over there. Did you not see all the 6.2 V8’s that were recalled by GM? And what is GM’s response? Instead of replacing all the engines, on some of them they’re just inspecting and putting slightly thicker oil in it. Every manufacturer has their issues. I feel like Toyota’s still treating their customers better than the other manufacturers.

 

I do agree that prices are crazy and big corp only cares about bottom line ...just saying I personally have not had a single issue with my 24.

My dated 2016 was and still is an awesome truck, it was tough to let it go and if I was original owner I probably wouldn't of done it. That said, the new platform is amazing and works with me only averaging 8-10k miles a year. You make a fair point owning out of warranty and for people that rack up a bunch of miles yearly.

 

Should’ve been thicker oil to begin with.
