If that 231º was sustained temps or I were towing a lot more I'd agree, but for a very infrequent 10 minute spike here and there I'm not worried about it.

I bought it as a CPO w/20K miles, I did my first drain and fill @ 30K and there was some towing in that 10K miles. My mechanic (who knew of my initial concerns) said the fluid was discolored but by no means burnt.

It's my understanding that when they deleted the external cooler they also changed to a new formula ATF that is supposed to withstand significantly higher temps without degrading.

    Alarms @ 302°F
If you see a warning on your 2019 Tundra dash displaying "High Transmission Fluid Temp", it means the ATF in the transmission pan has reached 302°F1. Some Tundra vehicles may exhibit this warning when towing in tow/haul mode at highway speeds23. It is recommended to monitor the temperature, as anything above 250°F can shorten the life of the transmission fluid over time

I have read through all the threads and posts, installed the new HU so I can monitor temps, and thus far I'm pretty happy with the numbers.

I bought my trailer in Nov. 2016 and (sadly) it has less than 7500 towing miles. This pesky FT job really interferes with my travels.

Also living in San Diego we don't have to go far to get to some really good campsites. Beach, mountains, desert all within a 2 hour tow.

Yeah agreed occasional is no big deal - I am just too old school and even without a strong reason to desperately want to keep any peak fluid temp at 200 or under - it just makes me sleep lots better. But what you are doing is a very good alternative and likely more cost effective - enjoy the camping!

Yeah, I was kinda' worried about it at first, trust me.

I found out about the cooler delete right AFTER I bought the '19... "They did WHAT?!" :eek2:

The more research I did the less worried I got.

I will say the whole trans temp thing was a great way to help justify the cost of the super cool Kenwood. "Honey, a new transmission is like $7K! This stereo could save a catastrophic failure! Plus you can watch Netflix on the way":thumbsup:

That's a cool headunit! The cooler and a Bluetooth reader would have cheaper than this "monitoring device". Good justification though haha

I agree with you that it's not really needed for occasional towing. My reasoning is, if I have spare money for suspension, wheels, lighting, I should also set some money aside for maintenance and prevention. Most importantly, it's for peace of mind. I don't want to be worrying about trans temps when I'm towing up the 395 in the 115 degree desert.

Also, the fluid is the same. It wasn't changed. It's the same fluid used in the minivans, camry, etc.

I’m a sucker for sunset pics. My favorite might be the drone shot with the two storm cells in front.

I guess from my research they changed the transmission shift points to help it cool more.

Here are my temps from just driving around town today, ambient temp is 45 degrees F and raining. I go up and down hills all day.

    Thoughts?

Supercharged? Get a cooler. Towing 7-10k constantly? Get a cooler. Enjoy 0-60s at stop lights? Get a cooler. Have 35s+? Get a cooler.

Otherwise get a nice beer cooler and put some drinks in it, consume.

S4 allows the TC to lock up in 4th... If you're in D, S5, or S6, the TC will not lock up as the transmission will be looking to upshift, which ultimately causes higher temp numbers (particularly at the converter). When the TC is locked up temps will remain cooler, and the transmission will spend less time 'hunting' for gears.

Towing uphill in D you'll find the truck fighting back and forth between 4th and 5th and not doing it efficiently. Computer is trying to keep the rpms low, which helps with fuel economy but hurts performance (especially while towing).

Whatever this forum told me to do
    Supercharged? check
    Towing 7-10k constantly? nope
Enjoy 0-60s at stop lights? check
    Have 35s+? nope

I put mine on way back because 230degrees in cruise control in Houston is bad.

I cruise now (pinned open) at 155degrees. Winter* is 140degrees.

*Houston has a couple months we call winter, for old time sake.

I am around 210-220 very rarely at 230+, with a supercharger.
Is there room left for a trans cooler in the front after the supercharger install? I may consider a cooler just to be on the safe side. Any recommendation for a good kit and installer?

    yes.

    no fitment issues.

I used the genuine cooling systems pkg. and had a local shop install

yes, you can buy the parts cheaper.....but, I'm lazy.

Installed a cooler on my '21 and saw the temps drop and average between 20-30*. I tow ~4k lbs a few times a year in the hills of WV, VA, and KY and the cooler was worth the piece of mind (I also pin the tstat open when towing). I ended up piecing together my own kit similar to the GCS kit and made my own mounting brackets which saved ~$600. If you're fairly mechanically inclined and watch the youtube videos, its a pretty easy DIY project...just takes several hours to complete.

The one kit by Sebus is sold out for a while, might piece one together and use the Hayden kind. Just went for a trip and noticed pan temp reached 215 degrees and TC at Peaks at 250 at hill climbs. Can’t imagine when warm or if hauling. Definitely a good idea. I’ll probably buy all the pieces and do myself when weather improves in my area.

Please read Ahead of installation the 3 Ways the cooler manufacturers recommended installation locations and which is most and least effective at cooling.

Most effective is straight up against the A/C condensor - next most effective is behind the radiator (who knows why someone would put it there) and the LEAST effective is to mount it a few inches in front of A/C condensor.

So choose whichever mounting location you want but there are differences in effectiveness depending on just how much cooling you are after.

    Luck All.

I'd be interested to read about this. Do you have some links?

Even if true, I'm guessing the differences are small. Everyone that has installed a cooler in the front, a few inches away from the condenser has reported steady temperature control. I'm guessing the mounting position matters for manufacturers trying to maximize cooling with the smallest cooler possible. In our case the coolers we use might be slightly oversized that even being in the least optimal position, it doesn't matter.

I'm adding one this weekend so I want to read about it.
