First off let me say, I dont rag or race my truck, rarely pull a duck boat (maybe 150 miles total) and over maintain my truck. Only mods are a diamond back cover, ESP under seat storage and a radar detector into the mirror installed. I was driving down the tollway yesterday around 75-80 mph and the power dropped and it felt like the engine was dying. Dropped about 15 mph then started shifting hard, as if I had a shift kit installed. I pulled off the toll road to a parking lot, turned it off, no fluid leaking, no bad smell nada. Started it up no noise. Backing up and driving slow it sounded as if I had gravel in my transmission. As I sped up the noise went away. Drove like a snail home, intermediately powering up and down most of the drive. Unloaded my truck of personal items and drove it to the shop. Videoed the sound a few times. Pulled up to the dealer and the assistant service mgr came out, asked me what was going on. I said lets go for a quick ride, literally 10' he said stop, as we could hear the marbles/gravel in the transmission making the noise. They took the truck in. Called me today and they are replacing my transmission. They said the diagnostic computer said it failed. I asked if it was getting a new torque converter and if they were flushing the cooler and all of the lines, he said he thought they were. Said they techs have a book of work they have to follow when replacing it. I asked if they or I could take pictures of the truck when it was torn apart as I keep EVERYTHING on my vehicles and over maintain them(I have done 4 services at the dealer so far). He said they dont take pictures or allow clients in the shop. I asked if they took the tranny apart, they said no. That this is not typical and they actually have to order the part. I asked about the warranty on the new part, he stated that it would follow the factory warranty(remainder of my 5/60k). He said that if I was paying for the part and work it would have a lifetime warranty. I added that my shaky fog lights(third time to bring it up and third shrug off) and the muffled blue tooth microphone. He said since the truck is parked they will have to handle the transmission first then look at the other items.

    Concerns:
1 Are they going to install a reman part or a new tranny?
2 What if they dont flush everything out perfectly and something buggers it up again?
3 What if it fails again at 70k miles. I bought this truck to drive it for a while not expecting this failure so soon. (he told me that Toyota stands behind their products, to which I answered Ok put it in writing.)
4 Why will they not give the same lifetime warranty on this replaced part?
5 Is this a common issue?
6 Has anyone else had this happen or had any luck with getting the warranty extended?

The service guy seemed nice and has been responsive, but....

    Thank you in advance

Not common, they will fix it, no need for pics, yes, there is always risk on any warranty repair, my guess is they will replace with new and they probably dont “open” up transmissions at all. Codes tell them what is wrong and they follow a flow chart.

Overall, not to worry, sometimes things fail...which sucks but they are stepping up so you are good.

I would ask Toyota for an extended warranty on the transmission. Not the dealer.

Most likely will be a remanufactured transmission. And they’ll send yours off somewhere to be rebuilt and used for someone else. Toyota won’t open them up and fix them and you probably wouldn’t want the local dealer to do that anyway.

You don’t have a cooler to be flushed. I don’t think you need a new torque converter just cause trans went bad. It’ll be under you powertrain warranty unless you have an extended warranty. If it went out at around 59k like mine did on my 2010, the warranty would be 1 yr 10k miles. I don’t know why Toyota would ever give a lifetime warranty on a transmission.

I also have shaky fog lights. Haven’t asked Toyota about it though as a new bumper is on my to do list.

Will/can they install a trans cooler? My last 3 trucks were all Ford Superdutys, 2011 F250, 2103 F250, 2017 F350. All 3 never had a powertrain issue. All 3 I drove to almost 100k miles. The transmission issue is really disturbing as this is also the first truck I did not get the extended warranty(rethinking that now). I was thinking since the transmission kept lagging and stressing during the drive it may of been damaged or at least prematurely worn. I do not have great mechanical skills or knowledge so thanks for the insight.

The transmission in the Tundra has been around for quite a while and is considered to be a very durable one, I would call your failure rare but shit happens. If you are concerned about extending the warranty you can buy the Toyota Platinum warranty up until the standard 3/36,000 new vehicle warranty expires.

    1. Probably a Toyota reman, not to be confused with a generic reman.
    2. If there's a silver lining here, it's that your truck doesn't have an ATF cooler, so there's no place for failure debris to hide.
    3. If you bought the truck new, and the miles are low, press dealer/corporate for an extended warranty, well beyond 5/60K.
    4. Forget lifetime warranties, nothing lasts forever, and they're not crazy.
    5. Not yet.
    6. I have read histories of owners getting extended warranties on transmissions.

Q1. How many miles on the truck?
    Q2. What's a "duck boat"?...(a) A flat-bottomed duck hunting boat, or (b) A WW2 amphibious landing vehicle?

If a transmission fails and there is metal carnage, the torque converter will be replaced as well because there is no way to remove the debris inside. And trust me if it came apart from what you described then its inside the converter.

I did buy it new, they gave me a sweet deal and were pissed when I didn't finance it, even tried to add some to it when that came out at the last min. Mileage is right over 19,000. Duck boat is a 20'x6' aluminum boat built by Mike Kleibert, with a 70+hp gatortail on the back, not the old tourist traps(literally).

There is a thread on here where someone with a 19 added a trans cooler. Doubt Toyota would do it and warranty it since they say you don’t need it.

No, not one light. I did get a funny smell about a week ago. And had some resistance or misshifts around that time as well.

That sucks, hope mine holds up. Have you ever shifted from drive to reverse to rock your truck free of mud/snow? That will kill a tranny quickly.

in this truck. I had 2 100 series cruisers that spent allot of time in Colorado. And as far as mud, have not been stuck before. Just riding ranch roads. We use Polaris Rangers for mud.

I tried to do that a few weeks ago in snow and it didn’t work. At least not like it did in my old Nissan hardbody. I think it’s electronically controlled to not let you rock it. I even tried turning all traction control stuff off and there was no difference.

Just checking...the DUKWs weigh 13,600 pounds dry without a trailer. :D.

Toyota will take care of you for 5 years/60K miles. For planning beyond that, I don't know what I would do. I tuned out the extended warranty overture when buying because it was a Toyota. In most cases, I believe deferring the extended warranty will still be a good decision when buying a Toyota, but that's just me.

Two ways to look at your transmission failure now: (1) It was anomaly from the factory that won't be repeated in the lifetime of the truck, or (2) the AB60 transmission is a Tundra weak link with foreshortened service life. There is little evidence of weakness prior to 2019. You have about three plus years to consider your decision before committing to an extended warranty or another truck. In any case, I would monitor my ATF temperatures to determine where they're running, even in light duty. Texas in the summer could be a tough environment without an ATF cooler.

Those that have inquired about dealers adding an ATF cooler to 2019-2020 Tundras have been refused, probably because of warranty considerations.

Check out the extended warranty threads on here. You can get them at pretty much cost through a couple of Toyota dealers. You have until 3yrs/36k miles...whichever comes first to throw down on one.

Not 100% sure if true but the service guy at the dealer told me that if something is a warranty repair that Toyota has barred them from using any reman parts for at least a few years now. If customer-paid then they would offer it. Any truth to what he was saying?

If true, that would be good news and good policy for Toyota imo. Maybe @Roman can help us regarding warranty repairs using reman or new parts. The only transmissions listed on any Toyota online parts sites, which by definition would be for outside shops and individuals, is Toyota re-manufactured transmissions.

I would guess if you’re under the 3/36 you’ll be getting a brand new crate transmission, not reman. If it were covered under an extended warranty, there might be language that allows them to use remanufactured parts. As for the failure, consider yourself unlucky. I haven’t heard of or seen many failures with these transmissions.

Cant speak for Toyota but on the 2011 ram I had the torque convertor went out less than a month after getting the truck, Dodge replaced it with a reman with a 12 month/12,000 mile warranty, shortly after I traded for my first Tundra.

Take it from someone who works at a Toyota dealership. You trans will be replaced with a transmission from Toyota and will include the torque converter. The oil to coolant heat exchange will be flush out. They will not add an external cooler. The transmission failure rate on Tundras is very low, your just one of the unlucky ones.
