As i do more reasearch into turbos, i get excited about newfangles things like variable or double volute turbos, but since ive never done real efi tuning, i think id be better off keeping it simple. The truck is fine. Like a camry with a bed. Ive never ‘needed’ more power, but as an ‘02, ive wanted more power, especially when accelerating without downshifting. But i think the first step is figuring out how to force the trans to hold lockup and gear, so i can do full throttle in 3rd from 2krpm.

As I do more research and talk to more people I've decided on a new plan. I want to do as much supporting mods before I proceed any further. First I'm going to buy improved connecting rods seeing as they seem to be the weakest link in the 2uzfe. I also need to look further into other supporting mods (please list anything and everything you can think of). I'm no longer going with a piggy back and instead am going with a standalone (prob megasquirt). Over the years I want to push 1400 hp out of the engine but that is far in the future. I'm slowly going to go through stages 1 - 3 and will hopefully build a beast that doesn't eat gas when I'm not zooming. But don't worry I plan on including the turbo but with a twist that will not be mentioned yet seeing as it's still in development... I hope to enjoy many more years with you as I build this beautiful truck into a beast of a sleeper that will gap anyone on the streets.

Bro please give us an update.. I’ve got a similar set up so far on my 2004 tundra.
    - k&n “hot” air intake
    - jba long tube headers
    - down pipe & American thunder flow master exhaust
    - fuel injectors from @dirtydeeds

been thinking about throwing a turbo or super charger on it for a couple years now and would love to hear what you went with on your truck build

    “Cold air intake”

Which one? The stock airbox is technically a cold air intake. Many of the aftermarket units are a hot air intake, and some even result in power loss.

Ah, yep, you have a hot air intake. Thats the style associated with power loss in our trucks. You’ll get more power if you reinstall the OEM air box. See that hole in front of the filter cone? That’s where the OEM air box pulls true Cold air from. The current setup you have pulls hot air mixture from the engine bay. Not good.

Well fuck me, is there anything on the market that will give better performance than the OEM air box?

Who said the OEM airbox gives bad performance? If you use it with the OEM Toyota filters, which flow less restrictively than aftermarket filters, you’ll get better performance throughout the full power band than what you’ve got in there. Did you do any research before you replace the OEM airbox? There’s dynotesting data out there from normal 3rd parties. Have you read the community megathread yet?

And if that’s an oiled filter, you’re doing your throttlebody a disservice dude. You know about boiled filters and the added shit they allow to collect, right?

Ok yea I will have to do some research but I’ll see if I can find my OEM filter to throw back in there for the time being.

just finished reading the mega thread, I actually wandered over to it right after my last input on the thread I chuckled to myself when the first thing I saw after reading it was your comment mentioning exactly what I just read aha

I’m not really sure what kind of filter the k&n I’ve got in there right now is, I got it probably four years ago when I first got the truck and I’m not the most mechanically inclined guy (cue the “hot air” intake purchase) but I’m trying to learn more about it all and educate myself as I go.

I’ve been looking at this web page since probably not long after I got my truck four years ago but finally just made a username today so I can figure stuff out and ask questions and stuff aha

    thanks for the tips man

You know, you will benefit from the smoother intake pathway of the K&N. You can adapt the intake tube to attach to the stock airbox and get the best of both worlds…

I’m intending to do similar in the future to help reduce clutter, will probably do it when I start to overhaul all the vacuum hoses in the engine bay with new rubber.

K&N and Airraid both sell parts to cobble your own hybrid setup together. I was looking at both as possibles. Both delete the large chunky (charcoal filtered?) section of the intake tube and replace it with a smoother, faster flowing unit.

Start here but continue scrolling to see all the part numbers required. Note things may be different by year: https://www.tundras.com/threads/1st-gen-lunch-table-general-discussion.60450/page-2316#post-3704462

I’m not implying this is the “right way” or anything, but it’s what I plan to do. Wish I had the means to dyno before/after. I doubt there would be much gain, but just to see if there was any loss to be concerned with.

And here’s a pic of what that looks like on a 2UZ-FE in a land cruiser, how much cleanup in the bay to expect.

You can “get up to” 6 million horsepower with a KN, but it doesn’t mean you’ll see that. There’s even a chance that you’ll loose HP with an aftermarket air filter (hot or cold. Just because a company claims you can “get up to xx” amount of HP with one of their products, it doesn’t mean you will actually see any gains whatsoever. A Black Ice christmas tree air freshener might add the same amount of HP as an aftermarket air filter for all we know…which is zero.

In the meantime, i’m betting thar quite a bit of dirt is being sucked up into and through that existing air filter that you have. The front tire is throwing all sorts of grit directly at the filter. I’d go to a wrecking yard and search for a replacement oem airbox and a fender liner. Your engine will last a whole lot longer.

    That's just a resonance chamber.

The very thin charcoal filter (on later years) is in the top of the airbox.

    Fyi, for '05+
I personally run that TRD velocity stack and an AFE dry filter.

If I could get that airraid tube/mini kit still, I'd probably have it.

    “Bodykits”?

EDIT: NO! Do not order from them! It’s a bogus site.

As of the time of my replies I linked, months ago, you could call either of those two brands directly and they’ll sell you replacement parts. There’s another company that may sell a kit too, Velox? Not sure. But as of the time of my last post I linked above you can buy pieces from those two manufacturers, and the “mini” kit @assassin10000 is talking about, is just a trimmed down (less parts) version of the normal Airraid kit, if I remember correctly, but uses same intake tube. Part number was identical. I feel like I posted all the info in the reply I linked, and the other replies that follow it. I called around and did web chat to inquire, I just never pulled the trigger. Which mayve been a bit stupid, especially if it’s now out of stock  (it may be now, I dunno)
