Trying to fix steering column

Looking for some guidance. My dad moved into assisted living and his truck was stolen. Of course they messed up the steering column. Having hard time finding parts to get it fixed and sale to someone who would appreciate a great truck. 2000 Tundra extended cab. Mileage 160,000. So really hope we can fix it up. Anyone know of resources for those parts or someone who likes fixing up trucks? Sitting in Arkansas.

What part of Arkansas?

 

Little Rock. I will get pics. It is at a garage and they say they can’t find parts. It has been there since October. Just too frustrated now. I have 2023 Tundra and brother and brother-in-law have 2006 Tundra so we love the truck but don’t have the resources. Appreciate the quick feedback.

 

What parts are they looking for?

 

My guess is the ignition key receptacle and plastic covers to the steering column if someone jacked the ignition.

 

I am going to pick up the truck this afternoon and will take several pictures.

 

Chances are you’ll have to get it from a salvage yard or eBay if you can’t find it new or remanufactured.

 

Here is the area. Very frustrating someone has to tear someone else’s stuff up.

 

No kick panel or is that busted too? Looks like the salvage yard is your best bet. Does the engine turn over or do you need a screwdriver for that in place of a key?

 

There is a cover panel thing that may fit back on or small crack. There is a key that turns the ignition.

 

So it sounds like you just need the plastic piece under the steering column they most likely broke to get in there. That and to inspect the wiring to make sure everything is hooked back up correctly.

 

Send me a message with the panel pieces you need and I will send them to you. It looks like the fc11 color code of light grey. I have one I'm parting and will likely just throw those items away. I don't have the ignition so you would have to find that.

Omg. This is fantastic. Unfortunately, I am not very knowledgeable about all the parts. I will see if I can find something online. The ignition is connected but hanging down so had to zip tie it up. So imagine there is some type of bracing or something. Sorry I am just not mechanical. So will post as soon as I can find something online information.

This may be helpful. Inputting your VIN for the frame number will bring up your vehicle on the link below for the epc website on the thread below.

Just googling “2000 tundra steering column parts” should bring up some exploded views from some online toyota dealers for the steering column. You’re looking for the lower shroud.

 

But this... is pretty frikin intimidating, shit man . But what could possibly go wrong... Adderall to the rescue?

 

Dash disassembly isn’t required to do a 4wd conversion…at least with an access cab it isn’t. I suspect it’s also plug and play with the double cabs as well?

 

At least one can get rid of that dash squeak by greasing those phallic plastic parts that go into the firewall to secure the dash.

 

Trying to help OP. Does anyone know how to remove this? Looks like rivet on driver side with threads on other.

 

I was wondering that myself when I first saw it years back. Maybe a dremel with a cutting disk?

Those are security shear bolts. They are threaded in, and the head of it snaps off when it gets tightened down to a particular torque spec. You can either drill and use an easy out, possibly get lucky by grinding a slot and use a flat blade screwdriver to unscrew them, but the quick and easy method that’s sure fire is to weld a nut to the end of it and use a socket to back them out .

Thanks for the replies. Got it out. First one the easy out broke because I didn't have a good angle. Had to cut the bolt. Lowered the column and second one came right out. Live and learn I guess.

 

Nice work! And standard button head cap screws can be used to reinstall the lock cylinder back into place.
