Lower ball joints/part numbers

It would appear that's a special only-dealer-can-order item. Like, the 'kit' is linked to the SSC (service campaign) and not a 'standard' part. It's something the service department would punch in the system.

I've only ever seen Ourisman/McGeorge with it in stock, so my guess is they're doing something special in their system to make it publicly available.

Really, the big disclaimer here is this: If you're not 1,000% positive which recall kit is for your truck or your truck is a 'crossover' year for LBJ design changes (there's a couple, clearly, at least 3), then pay the extra amount to buy individually so you don't get stuck holding the bag on parts you can't use.

I called Longo Toyota during y part search, their website said it was discontinued, but on the phone I gave them the part number and they were able to order it for me.

 

Yes, that's where everyone is pulling the part numbers from.

In the recall bulletin for your truck, they give you the VIN ranges so you can tell which kit is appropriate for your truck, but a lot of people have difficulty decrypting that shit.

 

Got it. Sounds like they are giving deals because there were problems with them in the past. Had I known, I would've tried to get the deal, but can't worry about that now. They are installed and rolling along.

 

I also have a quick question:
I have been waiting to repair my LBJ. I have purchased them from the dealership but not picked them up yet. The problem is the bolts are on a "unknown length" backlog. According the screen the dealer showed me, only 1 dealer has 1 bolt nation wide; obviously I need 7 more. SoCal has "1200"ish in Shipping/Transit FL had "300"ish. I have read multiple posts that say never reuse the bolts so my question for this group is; considering a possible parts drought, do I proceed with the change reusing the bolts and replace the bolts when they come in or wait? My son wants to drive the truck in two weeks. I don't want him driving 2 hours in to the mountain cabin without this change.

Little background on my truck: I have no idea when or if the LBJs were ever changed but there is no flex or wiggle in the wheel when jacked up. I have blown the front shocks though so I'm sure that is going to create more wear. My truck is not my daily drive but I have acreage so it gets driven at least 2 days a week.

Thoughts anyone?

 

Going to the dealer for these parts is usually just a good way to throw money out the window because they are usually charging you more for the same thing. Ordering from one of the online store fronts is the way to do it.

I finally clicked go on my Ourisman order, I'll update this thread with my experience on what exactly comes with the "recall kit" though it does seem to vary from person to person. But I also ordered new castle nuts and cotters anyway. Didn't order the rubber boots but if those don't show up I'll either reuse mine or just source them after the fact.

 

Lesson learned. I always thought OEM meant dealership. That said I already paid for the damn ball joints. The price was close to the price PS8820 posted for the 06 2wd. I got mine for 184 each they wanted to charge me 220 but I got the guy to knock off 10% since their sales were low this month. I am going to pick them up in the next few days. I will check with the company you posted to see if they have the bolts in stock. @NickB_01TRD . That looks like the part the dealership showed me. I was worried when I did a deeper dive on this thread and other pictures were of black bolts with no thread lock but then I noticed Shifty's post on the change over in '04.
The dude at the Dealership said not to rely on just that thread lock that it came with and I may want to add more. Does anyone have thoughts on that?

Link I sent is a dealership somewhere, it doesn't really matter too much as to where. They ship straight to you. That dealer is the most reliable and usually best priced place to order from. Many of us have ordered from there before.

 

First, no, "OEM" doesn't mean buy at your local dealership parts counter. Your local dealership parts counter will always charge at least MSRP, which is fucking outrageous. But if you buy it from the official national Toyota Parts website, they typically knock off 10, 20, 40% from MSRP and a lot of times you can pick it up at the EXACT SAME PARTS COUNTER at double or triple the discount you had to plead with them to get (at least, if that dealer parcipates in the national parts site you can, if not, there are many online who do and offer deep discounts to have you order there, THIS is my current favorite because it's tax-free, and free shipping over $75). That's where I bought everything below, both PCV hoses, two replacement rear vent window latches (actually gave my old ones to NickB ) and it looks like with all that shit, I still walked out paying less than you paid for both your LBJ!

NickB gave you the part number you need for your 2006 on bolts - that bolt is good for 2006. Yes, I used blue threadlock on mine and torqued to 59ftlb.

I'd change the LBJs and then change the bolts once you get them. The Toyota Factory Service Manual does not say they are one time use bolts, so I would not worry about it. When the bolts come in you can replace them one at a time. That is what I did. The new bolts come with thread locker on them.

Below are the 2 Toyota online parts stores I use to search for OEM parts. Once there you can look for your dealership to pick up the parts or you can have the parts shipped to you (i.e. much larger access to parts via online). If I can't find the correct part number, I just call the dealership and have them provide the part number and order online for pickup.

My parts are in the next day at my local dealership for pick when I order online even if I order late in the day.

The convenience of ordering online and then getting a message the next day that my parts are ready for pickup at pretty steep discounts versus going to the parts counter and paying raped prices and I don't have to wait for the parts via the mail is a sweet deal for me.

Shifty or any one else who bought the LBJ kit where are they manufactured?

 

Toyota only manufactures in like 5 places, and it’ll tell you on the sticker where it came from. Most of what I’m buying is either from Japan or USA. I’ve never seen Mexico or China on any of my boxes. But I’ve never bought the kit so I cannot answer your specific question. I do know a couple of people on here who have, and I think posted pics, and I can tag them if nobody else has pics of their box.

I ordered the LBJ kit from Ourisman on Sunday and parts shipped today, Tuesday, so I'll also post photos of what arrives in that kit.

 

I'd love to see the label. Toyota lists the origin on all authentic parts, here are a few examples. Note the very bottom of the label.

This was my kit from there. I feel like they sell so many of these kits they are very consistent.

this box was custom made for they two ball joints to fit into it. Where other parts o feel they just but in random boxes or bags and add a sticker

there is a batch and seq number on the box also

 

Maybe a dumb question (especially since I already ordered my parts) but is the actual "recall" still valid? Meaning could I have called up a dealer and requested they check records to see if it had ever been performed on my truck and got it done for free if it had not been?

I know some safety recalls exist and last the life of the vehicle (airbags, etc) but not sure if this would be the case here - I'm guessing not given the number of people having to do this themselves, but curious all the same.

 

You can actually check yourself pretty easily. I take it you're registered at the Toyota Owners site already, and have added your Tundra VIN to your account there? You can look up service records/recalls to confirm the work was performed. It'll probably be listed as an SSC (special service campaign). Most people had theirs done by 2007-2009 era.

 

I was original owner of my 06 and I never got SSC for this issue and it does not show on owners site that I got this done.

 

Yeah, I mean, you should be able to get the dealer to take care of it. Safety recalls never end. Call your local dealership's service department and tell them you think you have an open recall you need to manage. As long as the LBJ are original, they should do it. Have your VIN handy.

 

I take that back, looks like it was done back in 2008 when the Truck had 13k on it. Now, the truck has 90k on it, should I still get the LBJ replaced? Is replaced LBJ good for another 100k?

 

If you're stock suspension, and the LBJ are OEM, you're probably good for at least 100k. If it were me and those two things were true, I'd probably start thinking about that in the 110k-120k mile range.

 

I am registered but hadn't thought to go look. Interesting, it is not listed in the service history (I've owned the truck since 2011 and only recall performed was the airbag recall J0A which I had done in 2020) but it also shows "No recalls." I guess I'll call a dealer just for fun.

I'd also be shocked if it wasn't done since I bought it (again, in 2011) from a Toyota dealer. Maybe the service history on Toyota Owners only shows history since I've owned it?

 

That is my case since LBJ was done by dealer in a recall work, I know it is OEM and mine is about as stock as it comes. I guess I should be good for another couple of years then. (Only drive like 5k/yr)

Look closely. Sometimes it's listed as a "sub item" under another service. It may not say "LOWER BALL JOINT" in clear print. It may only show "SSC" with a number or some obscure other info. We've seen that before, and we've also seen members from The Great White North who can't pull any info on the Owners site for some reason. We've also seen confused people with a 2000 truck, which I don't think the recall applied to. Only 2001+

 

Gotcha - the only "SSC" item is recall J0A (airbags), but there are only 5 service records that show up in total from 2010 to 2020. The 2010 entry is before I bought it, the 2020 entry is the airbag recall, the 2015 entries might be that one time I ever used a coupon and let the dealer change the oil, can't even think of what else that would have been.
