Armchair QB for sure and only time will tell. I remember when Toyota announced they had identified the source of the debris and that they had addressed that issue. Then motors kept failing. Then there was a quiet change in the part numbers for the number 1 and 4 main bearings. Still seeing reports of new failures tho. Now they’re recalling 100K trucks to install complete brand new long blocks. Folks are free to draw their own conclusions I suppose. My conclusion is that what is arguably the best motor maker in the world could resolve machining issues on an assembly line quickly. The fact that these failures continue, and that oil analysis seemingly points to the main bearings (the ones with the new part numbers) shedding their silver plating, is too much of a coincidence for me to believe anything else at this point. Let’s hope for zero failures on the replacement long blocks. Toyota needs that right now more than anything IMO.

I haven't followed everything beyond tundra news, but are they experiencing engine issues in the Sequoia or the GX 550 or just in the Tundra/LX?

From what I understand, every platform that uses this block has had failures. I haven’t followed Lexus at all, but I assume even the flagship LX (Land Cruiser) is included.

The LX is included in the recall

The Sequoia and GX have not been.

Sequoia is interesting because one with think the same engine would have same failure rate and recall basis. But the LX is included so not just a Tundra or doing truck things issues.

Maybe just prioritization of highest failure rates to manage engine pipeline

    Lots of stuff!
It could be that the Sequoia missed the date range for the first round on the recall. I don't recall seeing any around here in 2022. So like the other Tundras in 2023 and 24 that aren't included (yet?). I think I have heard of a few failures with the Sequoia as well but not too sure where those reports would be at this point.

All Sequoia's are Hybrids, I would imagine since none of the Hybrid models were recalled that would be the reason. The LX's are NA like the Tundras that were recalled.

Sequoias are all hybrids. Hybrids not recalled currently...

I don't know about y'all, but there is no way the hybrid system alone is going to get you out of a jam at highway speeds if the engine let's go. I've intentionally tried to ease down the road on just battery, but it loses speed quickly and the slightest touch of the accelerator pedal causes the engine to fire back up.

FWIW, I have tried, really tried, to find documented end to end account(s) of 2024 engine failures that may in anyway relate to the issues in the recall. Given the degree of speculation swirling on the drivetrain, it would be cool if there were well documented cases to cite. If they exist and I can't find them. please post links or refrain from citing it as an issue. Thank you.

I’m with you. I see the Sequoia that isn’t verified and one there was supposedly gas contamination. Other than that, where are the reports? I don’t do fb or Reddit so I could have missed some.?.
24’s have been sold since 9/23… coming up on a year.

I have been following this since the beginning. My 22 has 45K on it now. Lots of posts about this issue. Great to analyze things from many angles.
I , in the beginning of all this believed the Toyota statement that it was a cleaning debris left behind in the production.
OK. If that’s true, then it should have been resolved within a year. But now we are pushing 24’s and the issue persists.
I no longer believe this theory or statement by Toyota. I believe they have a parts issue. I am not sure yet of which one . Maybe the bearing , maybe something else is disintegrating in the engine. THAT could also explain the debris.
If it is a part or component failure then YES, they must replace the engine in its entirety. Since everyone drives differently and engines are just like anything else. It will not fail at the exact time or mileage , but it will fail under its intended life span.

Changing oil frequently will not hurt your truck, it may prolong the failure.
I think Toyota is lying to us.
However, they are going to replace the engines so I will deal with it. It’s fine with me. Nothing is perfect in life. Other manufactures have failing engines too and they are not doing anything for the customer at all.

Ah yes, it seems that date + hybrid is likely the reason?
    Tundra/LX - 2022, non hybrid models
    Sequoia - 2023, all hybrids
GX - 2024, non hybrid models

That being said, are there still a similar volume/rate of failure reports, especially of the Sequoia? Many Tundra failures happened very early on.

There are 2024 failure reports here and on FB, documented well enough for me. I don’t Reddit either tho, maybe there are even more reports there. But this problem doesn’t seem to be going away.

I”m honestly more interested in seeing if any of the newly installed long blocks fail versus the blocks installed during assembly. We know for a fact that 2022/2023 motors are failing at a high enough rate for Toyota to issue a recall of over 100K trucks, and at least some of those trucks/blocks were manufactured after Toyota announced the fix. After that first fix, the bearing part numbers were quietly changed and there continued to be failures. If there are ultimately changes to the engine internals, we will know soon enough I’m sure. If there are no internal changes to the motor, and reports of failures dry up, that’ll be great too.

For Toyota to exclude Tundra Hybrids it tells me.
That if the Gas engine failed 100%, the hybrid takes over completely.
Asssuming it is not something you can simulate in normal driving.
This would safisfy the safety issue and the reason for the recall.
Am I giving Toyota too much credit for this type of design ?
Would the Toyota Service Dept be able to confirm this ?

Ryan Gregg alluded to a date in late June saying it’s an important date but then was told by his lawyer to shut up. If I were a betting man - something changed 6 weeks ago that has Toyota believing they’ve resolved the issue. That would mean nearly every engine made before July 2024 is subject to the same failure.
