I probably would.. it's $1500 or so to get the timing belt replaced alone..

Yeah and being entirely original at 212k screams more failures to come. The milage on the motor doesn't scare me off, but the frame rust and not replacing any other components makes me skeptical.
    Also, hello from Boise.

    I'm down in Beaverhead County.

And bought my truck in Boise.

Yes, Aisin is good, and often OEM, but not always for all parts. My mechanic does the same. He's savvy enough to search what parts Toyota uses. He always uses OEM or "OEM equivalent", and he's knowledgeable enough to know what's OEM equivalent. Doesn't have to come from the dealership.

I paid just under $1,300 for my timing belt, serpentine, water pump, pulleys and a fan pulley bearing just a few weeks ago. So yeah you're in the ballpark.

That's funny. I live in Idaho and travelled to Montana to buy my truck.
Nice find by the way. That truck for that price seems pretty good.

They're around! But they weren't coming up when I was looking. Not the super-clean ones anyway. A really clean 1st gen just came up 40 miles down the road from me, with just shy of 100,000 miles, for not much more than I paid for my truck. No frame photos. But what I saw looked really, really nice.

After seeing what's been on the market since buying my truck, I'm content. I did well. And the adventure to Boise and back was fun and part of the experience. But 40 miles away, over 100,000 miles less on the odometer...

And it lasted a whole day on marketplace...:) Screenshot 2024-07-08 125029.png

Well the one I found was never listed for sale which gave me a leg up.
What I see popping up reinforces my decision. I still see 1st gens that are priced crazy high with more miles. But I'm glad to be done looking.

Dealer I bought mine from (granted, different quadrant of the country) had it on the back lot, fresh off trade-in hours before. No pictures. But per their norm, they had the intern drop it on, like, TrueCar and/or Cars.com to put feelers out. I reached out within 3-4 hours and they were closed. They called me the next morning, "Sorry, I can't find it, must've sold". Then another dude emailed me about 90 minutes later saying they had it. Had him send pics, looked alright, I told my boss I needed the day off, and drive 90 minutes one way to haggle with them with a trade-in and cash in hand.

I'm just glad they didn't "list-it, list-it", with pics, I'd have never gotten it. It's weird the way it works out sometimes. And I'd been hunting for a few months, casually, at that point. I can't imagine trying to find the same, now, post-pandemic, after the dealerships caused this huge bubble of artificial inflation by gouging the shit out of everyone, with no basis in reality. They're all in it for the cash grab these days. Trying to find realistic private sales these days is a joke ... if it's a good deal, the friggin dealerships are trying to snatch up private sale vehicles to resell at enormous premiums. It's nuts!

I'm OK with changing a timing belt at 120K highway miles, which is what a Montana or Idaho truck probably has, but if it had cracks like that I wouldn't drive it another mile.

Other people will have better advice. I'd just say be ready to come across more things, at your mileage. Don't set up your schedule so you have to have it buttoned back up and running the next day, if possible. Like having no backup vehicle and a critical appointment or flight scheduled or something :D The benefit I found to having a mechanic do it (aside from just letting a pro do the job) was that it happened during the week, when it was easy to get a part that day or the next. Unlike a Sat/Sun. But - thermostat, coolant. Probably radiator and hoses.

My truck got held up at the mechanic's shop for an extra day because the fan pully bearing had play. Took till the next day to get that part. But that's one of those things you won't know till you're in there. Just good to have time to replace unexpected things, rather than feel like you have to button it back up and get on the road.

So here's what I'm thinking so far:
Included in the kit linked above:
    Timing belt
    Water pump
    pulley
    Tensioner pulley
    tensioner

Additional stuff I should probably go ahead and do:
Serpentine belt - thinking gates heavy duty because why not..https://www.rockauto.com/en/moreinfo.php?pk=1269362&cc=1432861&pt=8900&jsn=11
Idler pulley and tensioner for the serpentine belt. Brand recommended?
    Thermostat - Aisin 180*
Radiator - what brand would you guys recommend?
Radiator hoses - what brand? and should I just do upper and lower or try to replace other stuff?

Contemplating since I will be in there:
    Fan clutch

Anything else? I would rather take the time and do it now because I hate spending time wrenching so if I'm going to I want to replace as many things that are reasonable to replace now. besides I'm gonna save a grand doing all this by myself so I got a bit of money for parts

Denso for the radiator. I’m not sure of the need for radiator hoses or who makes them for Toyota.

Continental Elite which used to be the Gatorback serpentine belt. OEM has a tendency to start squeaking after 50k miles.

Idler pulley and tensioner should be part of the Aisin kit, are they not?

They are for the timing belt but I was planning to replace the ones for the serpentine as well.

So I'm questioning doing the radiator. most of all because it will take till next monday to get here and to my knowledge mine isn't leaking. What are your guys thoughts? Should I replace it while I have it out?

I'd prefer to have the truck by the weekend if possible. but I could always order the radiator separate and expedite that shipment to get that to show up by Friday as well.

How many weekends will you have in your lifetime? Your call. Nothing wrong with proactively replacing the radiator, especially if you're already draining (or losing) coolant from other work. Removing the radiator will make TB job much easier. EDIT: Just mark your hoses if you need to, to ensure you install them correctly. I want to say it's the host toward the passenger side that's easy to reverse, where it then gets rubbed by pulley in short order.

Radiator is cheap insurance. If it looks good and isn't leaking, it's not critical. And it's easy enough to replace later. If it were me, I'd buy one so it's on hand and replace when time allowed.

Dead stock with oem 16" starfish wheels. We'll see how long that lasts. :) Topper of unknown origin.
    1) That looks like a nice truck for the price. Well done.
    2) Good call on replacing the radiator. I wish I had ordered one since it's so easy to swap when doing the timing belt and the risk to the trans isn't worth not replacing it. I wasn't fully informed at the time.
    3) I didn't notice if you've seen the timing belt sticky. It was invaluable to me when I did mine: https://www.tundras.com/threads/timing-belt-master-thread-sticky.107240/
    4) Since this appears to be the ID/MT reunion thread, here's my Idaho Tundra. Originally sold by Parker Toyota (CDA) and lived it's life in Priest River. I got a good deal on it from a friend for $7K in 2021 with 225K on it. It does have some light frame rust from the chemicals they've been using on the roads up here the past 10 years or so.IMG_2742.jpg

One example (bent), another extreme example (hellaciously bent). Both from a recent purchase. I couldn't quickly find the other person who had cracked plastics on their radiator when shipped, but someone posted pics of either a mount, a boss, or some other black plastic provision on their Denso radiator that was damaged. But look for bent fins, anything to indicate signs of mishandling in shipment, and zero in on those areas to look for cracks and other damage. Last thing you want is to spend money on fluids only to install the radiator and find it leaks, eh?

It's really common for radiators to get damaged in shipment, especially when ordering from bulk-processing places like scAmazon, or non-professionally shipping places like fleaBay, etc. I've found Summit Racing's staff tends to really look out for Summit's product and will typically get things to you unscathed. There's been an overwhelming number of people on here who had flawless results with Rock Auto. But a lot of NAPA stores will also get you genuine Denso radiators, at a bit of an upcharge, and you can inspect for damage in-person as needed.

Yeah it's funny how you can hunt and hunt and find nothing then turn around and stumble on one. I was just heading home up the highway and thought I saw one setting next to the building on a used car lot. I turned around, went back and looked it over top to bottom. I went inside and asked them what's the story on the Tundra. The guy says "dunno, just got it in". I said assuming it drives fine what would you take for it? He thought awhile (it was late in the month of May so sometimes they need cash flow), checked something in his ledger, and after a while said "If you take it as-is I'll sell it to you wholesale for $6500." I said gimme the keys. It drove like a champ, everything worked like it should, everything was clean, and the underneath, including the frame, looked good sooooo, Tessie the Tundra is now mine. Couple of small issues but nothing serious and honestly, of all the trucks I've had over the past 65 years of driving this one drives and rides the best. Love it. Glad I spotted it before the dealer had run it through the shop and tagged a retail price on it.
