Loud bang, now truck wont move in any gear

2002 Tundra 2wd 240k miles
Sold it to my son last year. He's been pulling a small trailer with a mower on it. No trailer this morning, but entering the interstate ramp, he felt/heard a loud bang, and the truck coasted to the side of the road. Goes into all gears, but won't move.
Getting towed now. Any ideas? He just gave me $3,000 last night to pay it off!

 

Start with the obvious: u-joints, center support bearing, drive shaft, front yoke, rear diff flange.

After that check rear diff fluid for chunks or sparkles.

 

Disco Dave, that sucks. So truck still runs? Goes into gear? Maybe broken driveline? U joints?

 

Agree with the above, check the driveline first, then maybe investigate the rear differential. If the driveline is still spinning but the wheels aren't, then your problem is in the rear axle.

 

Shop just said the Overdrive planetary setup is gone. $3250 can start on it in 2 weeks.
I don't even know what that is. That seems like the cost of a transmission replacement.

 

I should have just sold this truck to someone besides my son. Now over a year later it seems like my problem.
Any parenting suggestions to go along with transmission advice?

What they're saying is the transmission grenaded itself. The OD gear. So he may have been hauling with OD on the whole time.

I mean I do, but my 800lbs load only goes 3min anway and it goes 1.5 blocks.

I may have another shop look at it.

Is it the A340 transmission - if so starting in '01 they began having OD bearing issue that don't show up until 200-400K. And yes it is destroyed - not even the TC will come out now. Ask me how I know.

 

Sounds like your son has a good credit rating with The First National Bank of Dad. Loan him the 3 grand.

 

The thing here is it's a mechanical thing and mechanical things break. It's not your fault. If your son would have bought the truck from anywhere else, the outcome would have been the same. That being said, it's time to cut the apron strings and let your adult son figure this out. If he is gainfully employed enough to pay the truck loan, he's gainfully employed enough to finance repairs. This is an excellent teaching moment on preparing and having the means to take care things when they break.

 

Any junkyards nearby? I’d toss a used trans in there, $300-$500 bucks and a few hours should get him back up and running.

 

^^THIS^^ I would be advising this route, and possibly doing the install yourself. Your son and his bros could make a weekend of it. The YouTube should give them all the information they need.

 

This is the way. Just make sure you get it out of a 00-04 2wd truck. The tailshaft is different on the 4wd.

Planetary gears were a known weakness in early FGTs. If I were you, I would search for a good used transmission from a wrecking yard.

 

You are better off sourcing a new, rebuilt transmission. They come with the upgraded planetary gear assemblies.

The early gen 1 tundras used the Tacoma transmissions. They just weren't strong enough for the heavier truck and v8.

 

I’d definitely search on craigslist, faceplace marketbook, wrecking yards, ect. I’d prefer to buy one on a truck that has been wrecked. The reason being is that you know the transmission was working up until the crash. No guarantees on how well it was working though.
Depending upon what side of the country you’re on, i have a 2004 2wd transmission in my shop. I don’t know the full history on it, but i removed it from my running driving 2004 2wd tundra that had a HUGE engine knock (i bought the truck as is with a bad engine).

 

I thought the grenading planetary was an '00-'01 thing, but wasn't sure. I guess I need to update THE MEGATHREAD!!!, eh?

That is what I did - used Yota1 out of Riverbank CA. $2650 with core. They don't have them sitting there - must wait to be built - took 6 mos. yet oh so worth it - smooth as silk shifting.

 

00-02. 03 it was upgraded.

 

I towed a 1300lb popup 700 miles a couple weeks ago, and 6000ish lbs of truck and trailer 50ish miles a couple days ago on my stock trans. Just gotta be easy on it.
