New Here and Looking for Part Numbers

I am new to Tundras, and absolute tyro. I am looking for the correct part number for the door lock cylinders for a 2002 standard cab. I don't have the VIN at the moment. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

Thanks, guys. I have done a little reading and see that I have to have the VIN before I can start ordering parts. This is a real rabbit hole and so unfamiliar to a guy who primarily works on mid 50s gm cars.

 

Fellow GM lifer here, pretty recent Toyota convert, relatively speaking. It's a very small learning curve.

Curious though, why replacing the lock cylinders? Can't re-key them to match your key? Dealer will re-cut keys for you if you don't have one. Just need the truck's VIN and proof of ownership to show them.

 

The locksmith said that the wafers are failing and that the best option would be to replace the cylinders. So I was tasked with finding replacements. Maybe there are other options?

 

I distinctly recall reading a post on here about re-keying locks on these trucks, but can't remember which it was. It might've been the gas tank cylinder, so maybe not applicable.

Have you tried just hitting the locks hard with graphite dry lube, specifically? I can't remember the last time I saw someone on here say, "Yo, my wafers/barrels are worn out!" Sounds almost like malarkey, given I don't remember ever seeing it happen to anyone on here. We get a LOT of people here!

 

That is exactly what I recommended, but a locksmith was called out. This is not my truck, it belongs to buddy of mine. I guess I will hammer it with graphite lube the next time I have access to the vehicle. It is currently at a shop where the ball joints are being replaced (the lower passenger side failed, thankfully, in a parking lot). They are also having issues with the locks, so I really don't know.

 

Make sure your buddy knows to ONLY USE OEM LOWER BALLJOINTS and get fresh bolts while in there, since the OEM fasteners will stretch/fatigue. It's a classic and super-well-known killer of these trucks. Aftermarket WILL NOT LAST and are known to fail prematurely, catastrophically, sometimes at highway speeds. We've seen dozens upon dozens, even from people who used clasically-highly-regarded brands like Moog (who now suck btw, Moog, NAPA, and one other company had a massive national LBJ part recall two years ago for these trucks).

I know the first inclination is, "yeah, riiiiight!", but if you want to see pictures of this out in the wild, we have dozens, maybe hundreds we can pull up. It's very much not a joke.

 

I have "this friend" who managed to take apart the lock cylinders and the ignition cylinder and removed the tumblers all together and now the truck can be started with any key or a flathead screwdriver. Its possible. Don't ask me how I know

You'll get at least a hundred or more people here in the best Gen section that will die on the hill for this recommendation. And for good reason. Call your buddy and tell him to supply his own parts or demand OEM LBJ.

 

Ya know, the VIN is visible from outside the truck. Look underneath the driver's side windshield wiper.

 

Yessir, that was the gas tank cylinder. But I gotta imagine the same could be done for the doors without much hassle.

Lastly, if you have a part # and it is a non-critical part (i.e. timing belt, lower ball joints), search it on www.rockauto.com and they'll show you the 3rd party options.

This stuff is awesome ^^

You'll need to have a small flat-blade driver to push the keyhole door open before blasting the graphite powder in. Slide the key in/out several times, blast it again, then try jiggling it back and forth to see if it'll give and rotate.

 

When our local dealer cut a key using VIN or key number, it didn’t work. I asked him to do the old way with my 24 year old key as a template and it worked just fine.

 

I've had the local dealer make 3 different keys off of VIN and had them work perfect. Wonder if it's a difference in dealer equipment or different wear and tear on trucks.
