Gotcha, I assumed axle bind would be a measure of front diff, my mistake.

Front is an open diff, so no left front to right front bind. It's front to rear bind when the front and rear axles are glued together. The third diff in the AWD transfer case allows for an "open" diff between the two. Add some computers and some active clutches and true AWD can be born.

Or just computers and electric motors, that’s another way. Probably better too, driveshafts aren’t particularly awesome.

I would only mess with it if you have any outward signs of a problem though. Groaning from the front when driving? Goes away when you put it in 4WD? Planning on doing some extensive 4WD action remotely? When the needle bearing starts to fail in these, its pretty unceremonious and doesn't stop the front diff from working. Hell, my front wheel bearings have been "going out" for 25k miles now.

No, no, and no! Good, I won't lay awake all night worrying about it then. I'll put it on the list to do when/if I have the axle(s) out.

I haven't pulled the passenger side so no idea what the bushing looks like over there.

I have no idea to be honest. I'll see what happens today when I put it in 4hi in my neighborhood. Haven't had a chance to hook up the wiring for the E-Locker

I just did this today and want to offer some thoughts.

The hardest parts of the job along with what I did are as follows …

Separating the shaft from the hub. This was easily accomplished with a 7-ton 3-jaw puller (where I converted it to 2-jaws) that I rented from AutoZone.

Getting the shaft out of the diff. For me, I was able to crawl underneath and use 2 pry bars (one on each side of the shaft) and pry the shaft out. Pretty easy actually.

Getting the new bushing installed. Not a lot of room and it takes a good whack. So, I put a long Jack handle over the handle of the install tool so that I could stand by the wheel and get it started with a 4lb sledge. The extra reach was invaluable. Then I hammered it home.

Getting the shaft back in. Someone in this thread said to put the opening of the clip on the bottom and then use the existing shaft as a slide hammer. That was the ticket. Worked perfectly. Thank you!

Caridge bolt is just temp, I need to get a hardened thrd rod for it, the originals threads got a little mangled. Fishing for the ring was a bonus the PO left for me.

After about 30 minutes of gently massaging the end piece I was actually able to insert it with the rod attached instead of fishing in there to thread it... bonus. That CV stub aligned the bushing dead on, no guessing, and provided a nice striking surface for the 3lb sledge.

@FirstGenVol Getting ready to preemptively do this for my son's 03 Sequoia while I do new CV's, but I'm having trouble locating the seal you referred to in this post. Since I'm sure his is "crusty" too, can you point me to the part please?

I'm not great at this. @shifty` is. But I don't think so.

Looks like it might be 90080-30028. Actually I think that's wrong too. It's 0300 and I can't sleep.

I haven't looked yet. '03-'04 are leading into a crossover year, so I'd prefer having a VIN to work with on this one to avoid mistakes if the part changed during these models. 00-02 are similar, 03-04 are similar and in the process of crossing over, and '05-'06 are the final iteration pair. Want to PM a VIN over? I can look it up, as a one-time thing (anyone reading this in the future, please don't PM your VIN, use the info in the fucking parts lookup info sticky thread).

Better yet, may just want to hit the local stealership and walk through their diagrams, that way at least they'll own up on exchanging if you get the wrong part.

That is correct for the oil seals in the front differential side. These part numbers are labeled as 41304P(LH) and 41304P(RH) in this diagram:

    https://eparts-images.toyota.com/431952D.SVG

    41304P (LH) = 90311-47027
    41304P (RH) = 90311-47013

But I think he was asking about the seals in the knuckle where the CVs mate?

I still have a brand new bushing and seal that I didn't end up having to use. If anyone is thinking of doing this, I'll make you a good deal. My loss, someone else's gain!

    PM me if interested!
