DIY: Fog Light Mod

So how should I proceed? Do I need to run a line from my switch to the grey wire?

I hooked the grey wire to the ground point in the footwell and now it’s working!

 

We’ll now I can’t turn them off separate from my headlights…

 

I know it’s a super late response, but the changes in to the fog light power affect 2018-2021 trucks the same. The power for the relay coil and the relay power are both sourced directly off the battery. Using this “V1” mod to connect the fog light switch output (which is RED pin 26 on the J165 connector now) to the grey wire (which is no longer at AJ10) would cause your fog lights to be on ANY TIME that you had the fog light switch on (even with the engine off).

 

Are you sure you actually have factory-installed fog lights? Your picture of the J3 connector is leaving a LOT of spots open, even compared to what is in the original V1 write up.
The 2007 EWD clearly shows that the factory fog light switch runs to pin 28 on connector J3 using a pink wire. If your fog lights were not factory installed, then there’s no telling what/how they are wired up and what method to use to change their behavior.

 

Looks like my truck was wired for the fog light assembly but not for the switch. My game plan is to pin a wire into the stalk connector (J10 - pin 4) and connect to the grey wire.

Does anyone know what kind of pin I need for this?

Download the 2007 EWD. The Fog Light circuit info starts on page 228
Also download the 2007 Wire Harness Repair Guide - that will help learn how to work with the connectors and the terminals
Finally, download the Connector Data Sheets from the 2016-2021 section as needed to look at the details for the different connectors. These data sheets show the connector information including the Toyota part number for the terminals for the each connector.

 

I was able to call the local Toyota parts department and get a terminal repair kit for the fog light switch. Should be in next week and I can finish the wiring. I’ll let everyone know how it turns out.

 

Do you have anytime fog light mod applied to your 2021? If so, which one works? I'm looking to do the same.

 

Did this get figured out? My 2021 is in serious need of this mod. I drive dark 2 lane highways and we have to those solid black hogs around here.

 

This mod won’t work on the ‘21. Your fogs would be on any time your fog light switch is on - regardless of ignition switch state or any other lights.
I mean - if that’s what you want… but for me, I prefer to keep my lights to turn off when I shut off the truck.

 

anybody got a step for a 2019 Tundra?

 

Is the wires the same colors?

i tried this yestereday on my 2017 5.7L tundra. wanted to share my experience and see if anyone has ideas on how to troubleshoot...

i read (and re-read) this entire thread and made notes for myself along the way - thanks to everyone that provided detailed photos and explanations by the way!
i followed the instructions in the EddieV1-3.pdf, using posi-taps instead of male/female connectors.
i triple-checked i had the correct two connectors and wires. no luck - fog lights would not turn on.

i then reverted back to the original wiring configuration. fog lights still won't turn on.

i then found this thread which got me wondering if i'd somehow blown a fuse. it mentions one in the engine compartment (labled FOG) and one in the cab (labeled TAIL). i checked both - they were fine.

i'd really like to get the mod working. failing that, i'd like to get the fogs to work as they did originally. i'm no electrician, but i'm wondering if one of these scenarios is the issue:

1) the posi-taps i used were labeled for 20-22 gauge wire. could they be too large for the size of wire that require jumping? i recently used one this same size to do the TPMS light delete - the mod worked as expected.

2) the posi-tap connections aren't properly connected. i'm not certain how i could screw this up twice, but suppose it might be possible?

3) the fog light relay is toast. again, i'm not sure how this could have happened, but maybe i borked it during my attempt at this mod?

4) the fog light switch on the light control stalk is kaput?

if anyone has any suggestions on how to trouble-shoot i'd appreciate it. thanks in advance.

 

I haven't ha my Sequoia long, and I am still feeling out all the forums to see which actually have useful information, and this one keeps coming up with answers... Thanks for sharing the "how-to"! Going to attempt this in a 2-16 Sequoia this weekend.

 

Bummer man. Those experiences are why I won't try and decipher thousands of pages of wiring diagrams to try and get this mod to work. It's just not my area of expertise. Most things I try on my own, for electrical stuff, I need directions and pictures, lol. Hope you get your lights fixed.

 

I used this (FogLightsEddieV1.pdf) on my 17 and has been working for 4 years. Instead of cutting the wires I just de-pinned the 2 connectors in the instructions and jumped them together. Easy to go back to factory.

 

That method didn't work for my 18. Glad I pulled the pins, made it easier to put back together.

I was set on doing Eddie's V1 fog light mod. Bought 22ga wires and fully insulated male/female crimps ready for the install. Decided to reread the entire thread again and found post #84 using another method so I chose that route instead. Works like a charm... after fog light mod was complete, I ordered SS3 LED Fog Light Kit from Diod Dynamics arriving Thursday... can't wait for the install!!!!

 

Was ganna go that route but decided on the V1, but I didn’t cut the wires I de-pinned the wires and hooked them up together, super easy. Took me like 30mins to do.

 

Can you offer in some detail how you depinned these connectors? I tried a couple of small SS wires into both sides of the backside of the connector (top and bottom) with zero success.

I was about to cut the wire but I'd rather not do that.

You see that white plastic across the connector, that white bar has to be pulled up with a little flat head or anything small. That will unclock you all your little pins (or little connector whatever they are called lol). The white bar doesn’t come up much, but you will know when it’s completely up.
So when you have that unlocked you will flip the connector AJ10 around, so now the white bar will be facing down.

Now with a small pin or sewing pin you will push UP from underneath where the red arrow is pointing, as your pushing up gently bull back on the wire, should pull out no problem. Once wire is out remember to push that white bar back in to be on lock mode again.

The yellow arrow is where I pulled out the grey wire. I messed up the plastic a little cause at first I was trying to push down But I just pushed the plastic back up and reconnected the grey wire and locks back in place just to make sure it still worked.

That thing was a serious PITA! Got it though! I even had a male connector for the flasher relay with the same design and played with it for too long to pull a couple pins as practice. Connector AJ10 was very stubborn with pin removal!

Anywho - I'm in the final stages now. Just waiting for some connectors and shrink tube to arrive and call this done.

I rewired a fleabay switch making it shunt to ground while keeping the power light and on light enabled.

I'm happy to say that grounding the wire with a 12v incandescent test lamp safely allows testing and triggered the relay turning on the fogs.

On to the next step!
