Compass/temp not working

My overhead compass and temp display is not showing up. I know there is power going there because the homelink button is lit up. Also, I have used a voltmeter to check all of the truck's fuses.

 

I'm sure you don't want to hear this, but because the compass uses an embedded unit and the temp comes from a separate sensor elsewhere in the car, if both are not working, it's likely a problem with how power and/or the LCD display is being fed because the likelihood of two separate systems failing is almost zilch.

I would immediately suspect the harness has an issue like a fried power pin, or more likely the PCB or circuitry pushing power is fried. With you having a DC, I could see a number of things such as a sunroof leak could short the unit or other things.

First thing I would do after checking both sides of the harness for burnt pins, assuming a DMM shows constant and ACC power is there as you said, is pop the unit down and trace how power gets to the circuit board and then to the LCD. Maybe the LCD cable is not fixed or soldered, so you can unplug to unseat/reseat to see if that helps? I'd look for for burnt spots on or around any circuitry you see, check for evidence of water leaks around the area and corrosion.

Best bet is probably hitting up the junkyard and buying a replacement assembly. Most of the pull-a-part lots in my are charge $20-40 for consoles like this.

SO I have pulled the whole unit down, taken the circuit board out and re-soldered everything that looked suspicious(nothing really looked broken) I also cleaned up the wires. Some wires (green,black, and white) come off a big harness and go towards the two map lights. Other wires go to a smaller harness which plugs into the compass/temp Circuit board. As I was putting it back up for the night, two bare wires (green and black) kinda sparked, they go to map lights( and back to board), and the display lit up, showed accurate temp and direction.
Because of this, I think that I have no power getting to the board, or maybe something is wrong with the ground wire.
Also to note: The homelink garage door button doesn't have a constant light anymore.

On top of this, my map lights only turn on when the doors are open, and the back dome light is turned to "DOOR". My doors were open when the two bare wires connected and the display worked.

I have not seen any burnt pins in the harnesses.

 

Is there a seperate fuse for that?

 

I am unsure. I have checked all of the fuse boxes that I could find in the manual.

 

Update.
Went to my Dad's, we used the 2005 EWD that I found online and traced it back to a snipped ground wire (white-black) on the drivers side door column going into the back of the drivers interior fuse box. What was weird is that when we tested the ground for continuity from the part where the overhead console plugged in to the "IN" ground point on the passenger side, it worked, so we never assumed that there was bad ground in that area.
My guess is that someone at the dealership I bought it from used a panel tool while installing aftermarket stereo/mic and cut through the wire? I'm not sure.

Anyways, it all works after I installed a new ground wire-now my neurotic self can sleep at night.

 

Reviving this thread because my compass/temp display light goes bright to dim and does this for a few minutes until it stays bright. Anyone have a clue?

 

No clue sorry. If it helps at all, mine goes dim when my headlights are on and goes bright when the headlights are off. Perhaps something in that circuit is malfunctioning?

 

Mine does the same but when I don't have the lights on, that's when I notice the dimming.

I have a 2003 Limited Access Cab, can this display be added to the 03?

 

It's a Double Cab only option You can add it, but need the harness from the Double Cab, and the console from a Double Cab, and some cutting on the headliner. And a temperature sensor that installs near the radiator, and the supplemental wiring and bracket for that. I bought the correct harness 2-3 years ago, but stopped there. I'm willing to part with the harness if you're feeling adventurous. I didn't have the time to invest, but I know it's possible.

 

I added a GNTX-177 mirror from a 99-06 GMT800 series GM. All you need is a power and ground. For $50, it’s a cheap and easy upgrade.

 

This is true, I installed a Gentex also, posted some FYI info on that here and maybe a couple replies after it, but I don't think it solves @love2rv 's issue for one reason.

With the the Gentex mirror swap, while you can get their mirrors as a direct bolt-on upgrade, with embedded reverse cameras, temp display, compass display (mine has hidden behind-glass compass), you still need a probe able to sense the outside temperature and report it to the mirror in terms it can understand if it's equipped for temperature, or with the backup LCD, need something outside to provide the video backup source for the in-mirror LCD to show. The compass is conveniently built-in on their mirrors and you only need to calibrate it once it's powered up, but the other features require input. That's why I opted for a compass-only mirror.

It's not a big deal if you have a DC, the harness should be in place. But with an AC truck like mine, or an AC like Tundra2's new truck, they didn't come with the harness that supports the temperature probe, the overhead heads-up display power, autodim mirror, and/or sunroof controls. Lease us AC/RC owners a bit screwed. Well, unless you have the wiring schematic, and correct harness to add those features. Which *is* possible. I just wasn't willing to do it just to add a simple compass into the mix.

You may potentially be able to repurpose the temp sensor from the donor vehicle too! I really don't know. No reason it shouldn't work with much less effort and no spending $200 on the factory harness the DC uses.

 

It’s a pretty simple swap. You buy mirror mount adapter, power/ground and run the sensor from the donor vehicle out near the front of yours. I have mine zip tied next to the drivers headlight.


The compass auto calibrates and the auto dim works as long as it has power. There is a write up on the FB FGT page.

 

Hello everyone, I just got this nice 04 with 54,000 and wanted to upgrade a little found a overhead console on eBay with compass and outside temp ,got a new ambient temp sensor plugged it in to the factory plug up front ,I don’t have a sunroof so I unplugged the sunroof switch, put the blanks in its place plugged in to the factory square harness ,put back in place compass works ,but just have - - - were temp should be any ideas ?

 

More than likely it's because your harness does not have the conductors required.
If you don't mind, take a pic of your harness plug as it comes out of roof. If it does not have pink and blue in pins 4/5, that's the reason. The below is a plug not equipped for temp and then one that is.

In case you wish to check the temp sensor and you have a volt/ohm meter, you could check the resistance of sensor. Also check with your leads at blue/pink wire at connector which will check all the way back to the sensor.

at these temps, ohms should approx be....
50F 2.68-3.3
60F 2.1 - 2.6
70F 1.6 - 2.1

I put the sensor I am useing on my truck in my sons 03 Camry it works fine .

 

I would test continuity of the wiring from the sensor location to the harness in the roof.

I say this because I have one of the DC roof harnesses, and if memory serves (it's probably in the thread Bubba linked), there was a connector you needed to plug together under the dash in order to completed the circuit between the harness coming through the firewall and the harness up to the roof. Testing for continuity would be an easy way to check if there's continuity there.

If memory isn't failing me, that temp sensor is just a resistor or whatever, that fluctuates resistance based on ambient temperature. If that's the case, I'd expect it to be a loop, where, if you bridge the two wires in the connector, you should be able to measure for continuity between the two harness pins.

I also seem to remember someone mentioning something about a button you can push on that console to turn certain things on/off. Maybe check that first.

 

PS - the wires may also be a clue - I'm wondering if the pinout being different isn't at the heart of the problem, maybe the connector needs a re-pin.

 

Do you mind taking a pic of back of unit please. Would like to check the part number listed. I’m @ my yearly finger wave, so not where I can look much but when I unplug my sensor, the result is what you posted in your 1st post _ _ _ 3 dashes. As I mentioned earlier and @shifty` mentioned, doing a continuity check from plug to sensor connector is a way to find out if you have a conductor issue

 

So… I have a 2002 AC “Limited” (burl wood!) which mirror shows both compass and temperature displays on startup, but then only the compass directions.

I’ve been meaning for a long time to post a thread for help figuring out how to get the temp to display— I figure it’s possible, or why would it display at start up?

I’ll see if I can get help in here instead of starting a related-but-different thread.

 

Have you tried pushing any of the buttons on the console? Actually I'd just follow @BubbaW steps here.

If you want to test if your sensor is correct, get a digital multimeter, note the ohm specs Bubba posted above, and see reply # 4 here for the temp sensor location next to the passenger horn, on the radiator support.

 

Don't want to assume wrongly but you're talking about a temp/compass rear view mirror not an Overhead Console ?
If indeed it's part of rear view mirror, what type is it and maybe even picture....we luv pics !
Also, do you know if it came with truck or an addon like a Gentex brand ?

It’s the rear view mirror; its a 2002 and no overhead console. Stands alone, attached at the top of the windshield (looks like wires routed along the front of the headliner, hidden). I believe it is original to the truck. I’ve never noticed any markings but I’ll get pics to post and see if there are markings on the back.

 

I poked around under the dash around the fuse box ,didn’t see anything un plugged after I sent the picks I think Shifty is correct about the pin configuration my plug doesn’t match the unit , the guy on eBay said I could send the unit back so I did , didn’t see the pic request until now sorry about that I an going to get one out of the same year and model as mine and make sure the plug and wire configuration matches to try to eliminate as much drama as possible ,I don’t want to butcher up my new ride quit yet I will update as s as I can ,thanks
