High Beams Won't Turn Off When Fogs On

I noticed when my fog lamps are turned on, my high beams are able to turn on without turning off the fogs. From what I've read, it seems the expected behavior is for the fogs to turn off when the high beams turn on, but mine stay on.

Anyway, once the high beams are on while the fogs are also on, I can't turn off the high beams. The headlights stay stuck in high beam mode no matter what, until I turn off the fogs. This occurs only when the fogs are also on at the same time.

My headlights are an osram halogen upgrade with Amazon harness addition, and my fog lights are also upgraded halogens off Amazon.

My blinker bulbs are LEDs that caused hyperflashing at first until I changed out the flasher relay with one from Diode Dynamics.

Any ideas? Is there a thread buried that I can't find that addresses this issue?

You guys have WAY more patience than me.
If I ever 'HAVE' to do a headlight upgrade, Im duct taping 2 flashlights on my fenders ! LOL
Good luck and keep us posted.

I read somewhere on this forum a very apt way to describe the stock headlights. Something along the lines of "they're like old oil lamps held by a coal miner...over there."

Yeah I saw those... Thought only LED headlights had these issues. That was a big part of my decision to avoid LEDs

Could be the harness. Was it a specific one for Toyota's negative switched headlamp wiring?

Not sure about Toyota negative switched headlamp wiring, I don't know what negative switched means. Here's the harness I'm using.

I'm definitely more of a monkey-see-monkey-do plug'n'play guy, and don't really understand a lot of the technical stuff. This forum has been a godsend.

You need to run a resistor on the factory passenger side headlight plug because you have an 04. Haven't done this myself so I don't recall the resistance but that harness means there is hardly any load on the factory headlight circuit and it makes things act weird.

Does adding a resistor increase the draw from battery? I don't want to add load to the truck's power source, so I might just leave it as-is if a resistor will pull more electricity.

Yes it will pull more juice. Trying to determine the best route for everything myself. I thought this issue was mostly the later 1st gens but I installed mine today and as you see I'm having the same problem.

    1 or 2... I lost count
Adding a resistor will increase the draw yes. But, in effect, you have created the exact problem that you would have if you had installed LED bulbs. That harness you linked has the stock circuit only responsible for switching the relays, which is very little draw, just like if you had installed LED bulbs. You would need maybe a 40-50 watt resistor to simulate the draw of at least the stock halogen bulb or the truck will not recognize the resistance it needs and you will continue to see your problem of the high beams and fog lights not working properly.

The behavior that I have seen when I was working on my brother's 04 truck, was the fog light switch would activate the high beams and the fog lights would not work at all, so your truck's behavior is slightly weird to me. I'm guessing that the relays are providing just enough resistance that your fog lights will still come on normally as the truck sees resistance for your low beams, but then when the high beams are switched on it does not see enough resistance as it needs and it does not think that the high beams are on so you get trapped in fog lights activate your high beams limbo.

I used this resistor kit in my brothers truck with no issues so far: https://www.amazon.com/Elite-Vision-Advanced-Automotive-Accessories/dp/B07CG63LGM?crid=GDU5QDAHTM4C&keywords=h4+resistor&qid=1640068205&sprefix=h4+resistor%2Caps%2C145&sr=8-6&th=1

Thanks for the info. Interesting and something to think about. From what you've said it sounds like putting in the resistor will disable having fogs-on-high-beams-on at the same time (i.e. acting as stock).

Through this I've unexpectedly achieved same-time fog + high beams without doing the mod, albeit with quirky high-beam shutoff.

The harness essentially unloads the factory wiring and uses the normal power wire for the lights to simply trigger an auxiliary relay that feeds the light power through a larger gauge power wire. The harness I had also only uses the drivers side headlight plug for the trigger. The passenger side light plug is left unplugged as the new harness has new plugs for both lights.
