Most know that but the insurance company will have a different view. Most aftermarket parts always say "meets or exceeds OE specifications". I don't by that.

Two sides to this accident. If not totaled you get diminished value which usually exceeds repair cost. bottom line truck not worth as much after wreck. Continue to reject any aftermarket parts by showing body shop where they don't fit right, and they won't. gaps won't be the same on each side, there will be high spots / low spots along the body lines. No worries auto shops love it. they get paid to use the crap aftermarket parts and they get paid to install the new OEM parts which are usually 5% more. That good for you also the higher the repair bill the bigger the diminished value.

Won't the other driver's insurance company be paying for it? I would definitely fight them to cover enough to buy a year newer Tundra. You probably have some leverage to negotiate. This could more than easily become a lawsuit and I'd be willing to bet they'll jump a little to avoid one. Maybe that's not the best line of thinking, but, take it with a grain of salt.

I live in TX - some of the worst drivers I've ever seen here. Glad you're ok.

First off -very happy that you are both okay. The truck can be replaced if not repairable.

Secondly - I think your crash was the "offset front collision" crash test that got the Tundra the bad NTSB crash rating on that test. It also inspired Toyota to remove the driver's side grab handle to prevent it from hitting the driver in a collision that collapsed the A pillar.

For the OP - It would be great to know a few things if you are willing to share:
What did the inside of the vehicle look like after the collision?
Did it collapse to anywhere near where you were sitting - either your head or lower body?
And what speeds were both you and the other driver traveling at the moment of the collision?

I think it’s totaled then if that’s the value before. That’s $15-20k of damage easily. Like I mentioned before my wife’s was 18k but hers was newer and worth $34k at the time so it didn’t total.

To us, no but to the industry standard
Exactly to us , never will meet the quality, to them though as long as it meets "industry standard" which is a low bar its fine. Keep fighting it. Also given the circumstances of the wreck I'd hire an accident attorney

The Tundra definitely did it's job keeping you guys safe. I'm glad for that, but it always sucks when you lose a vehicle you've loved. I hope you are made whole with as little hassle as possible, and that no one has any kind of lasting injuries. Always best to get checked out after an accident. A fellow I knew had 3 broken vertebrae after an accident, and didn't feel it for 2 days. Make sure you guys are both completely ok and everything is on record before you accept any kind of insurance agreement.

Thanks for sharing that. It's incredible that you had a combined closing speed that high and were not injured. And that the truck isn't damaged much more than it is. Should give us all additional confidence in the ability of this truck to absorb an offset front collision when you were able to walk away uninjured. At least when the other vehicle is a smaller car, though even the Mitsubitchy did pretty well.

I'm pretty sure that it was in the NHTSA front partial overlap test that the Tundra tested worse than newer designed pickups. But in your case, it performed like a champ.

I’m pretty sure the front-end offset crash test is done with the impact inside the frame rail. Here - it appears the impact was outside the frame rail. I believe this is the reason his airbag didn’t deploy - those sensors sit just a few inches outside each side of the radiator.

@TTU19 glad everyone is OK, I feel your pain on that one. I had a similar accident, except airbags deployed. The other driver was going 60+ MPH when she hit us though.
Accidents just plain suck. These Tundras do take a hit pretty well though, I was very impressed.

Ouch.. hope everyone was ok. Yeah, Tundra absorbed it pretty well. This past week has sucked though. Dealing with insurance and rental cars, blah...

Everyone survived, my wife and I had to go through some physical therapy etc. The kids walked away pretty much unscathed. I was told that no matter how big the settlement is after an accident, it will never make up for the loss. Good luck with insurance, they will nickel and dime you that's for sure.

I have been lucky enough to never be in an accident where airbags deployed, what is the sensation as the driver? Does the steering airbag blow your hands off the wheel? Just curious and if you don't want to share, I totally understand. I have watched videos on it, but never heard from an actual person what the experience was like inside the vehicle at that moment.

Glad y’all are OK, that’s the most important thing. Hopefully they’ll total it and you can get a new ride. If they try to fix it, make sure you consider a diminished value claim, I believe you have to get an attorney involved but a quick Google search should help with more info.

Airbags are weird, I didn't even realize I had hit mine, but I had the burns on my face and arms to prove it. The seat belt bruising from holding me in the seat was more painful than the airbag burns. I posted on here after it happened. Post 29 has the dash cam of the accident.

The best way I can describe it is to have taken a blow to the face while in a pillow fight with Chuck Norris. I was bracing against the wheel with a death grip at about the 3:00 and 9:00 positions (probably the worst thing you can do, but a very natural response), and no, my hands weren’t blown off the wheel. My glasses were sent flying, and I had slight cut on my forehead from that. I did have some very minor abrasion on my inner forearms from the bag, but that was minimal. I do think my whiplash injury would have been much worse without the airbag.

That was an angled T-bone into a Sonata when doing about 50 mph in my Tacoma. I spun 180 degrees on impact and was still moving for what seemed like an eternity.

USAA tried to screw me one time. My wife was driving a Honda S2000 and someone hit it at her work in the parking lot. Guy was driving a F150 and basically ran over the front of the car. We both had USAA insurance and they tried to put "refurbished" parts on it. They basically said "take us to court". So I came out of pocket to get OEM parts replaced. I then cancelled all of my insurance policies and moved all of my bank accounts. I'll never do business with USAA again and regardless of what they say, they don't give a shit about veterans.

Also the pillow is made of heavy canvas. This is a really good explanation!

Thanks for sharing and glad you are both good coming out of it. I hope to never know airbags for myself, I wear glasses and they have always worried me, since I have been cut in other incidents where I was hit in the face various times. I always assumed an airbag would be worse.
