Hey everyone my name is Jeff and I'm a new owner of a 2001 tundra. Truck is super clean for its age

I own a 2001 tundra. I just bought it Friday and I noticed that my oil pressure gauge drops down to almost 0 at idle ( once warm) and moves up once I give it gas. Is this normal ? If not what could be the problem.

 

Welcome, and no that's not normal. Should be about 1/2 way on the gauge when warm. I would install a new oil pressure sensor to see if you get different readings. Good luck.

It shouldn’t go as low as zero, but mine stays pretty low at idle, lower than any other vehicle I’ve owned.

Welcome aboard Jeff. I'm thinking Sending Unit as well.

 

I stand corrected if those last threads are correct. In all my years as a tech, i never saw an oil gauge that represented normal pressure at the bottom of the gauge. Maybe its a Toyota thing.

The older 4.7 is fine with anything above 6 psi at idle. The top end doesn’t have lifters or rockers to worry about.

 

Thanks, that makes sense. Maybe Toyota should have re-calibrated their gauges to prevent concern.

This is my first Tundra, and have absolutely no experience with first gen trucks. But i still can't wrap my mind around having gauges that don't reflect what we have all previously used as the standard for all this time. Does the first gen also show that when your gas gauge reads a 1/4 tank, that it could actually be a half a tank as normal?

 

Mine does that, too. It's maddening.

Welcome from Vegas and dont worry about your oil pressure being low at idle. If it does not move when Rpms increase, you have a problem. I believe this is a First Gen thing and forum. Dont listen to TURD gen people (shoo), their trucks are different.

It's normal, at idle the service manual gives 4-5 psi and at 3000 rpm, 43-85 psi. The gauge is calibrated well for those specs. These are for a v-8 model, v-6 is same at idle but slightly less at 3000 rpm.

 

314,612 is normal?! Yay!
