Still a newbe and I know that the 1st gen Tundras read low oil pressure idle, but is this reading ok? This is with the engine up to temp and tranny in Drive, in Park, it reads slightly higher. Engine sounds and runs GREAT, 4.7L and 123,000 on the odo. Can other Tundra owners share their readings. IMG_0240.jpg

You may be able to get an actual psi value to see if it's in the acceptable range. It's probably not going to be very high under the circumstance you describe. As mentioned, that's pretty usual.

With that engine temp is normal... The 2uz-fe engine doesn't do alot of oil pressure on idle. The oil pressure switch is just that, a idiot switch gives you a rough idea not a (real value idea).

If you want real value you have to change the switch and use a real meter for accuracy.

Hi everyone. Thanks for all the responses, definitley feel better about everything now. Just for the heck of it, I bought a new Toyota OEM oil pressure sender ( part# 83520-60051 ), we'll see if it changes anything. I think the one in there now is the original because it has an " 03 " stamped on it, the one I bought has a " 15 " stamped on it. Does Toyota date stamp their parts?

This is from my Haynes manual, says at idle 4-5 psi. Chunk.

The supplier might stamp the year on the part it was made. Rare that oil pressure units fail compared to oxygen sensors.

Yes, that is normal on a first gen. My oil pressure gauge would drop even lower than that on hot days.

If there isn't a seal (o-ring) you must use tape... Make sure to torque the sensor to the proper setting.

Get a Haynes manual to confirm the torque value you need.. don't quote me but it like 12 or 15 ft pounds?

My 2000 ran just a little higher than that at idle and went close to the middle once the rpms were up. 186k and never had to change the sensor. The only time I ever had an oil pressure issue was when I put a non Toyota filter on it. The pressure was all over the place. In case you didn't know this, don't use anything other than the oem filters. They have a check valve to keep the dirty crap from going back into the pan as well as a pressure relief valve.

Hi, thanks for the response. I use nothing but Toyota filters in this truck. I found them to be cheaper online than going to the dealer.

I have an issue also. I used some heavier oil than normal but on the gauge it was high but fine. Some time recently it went way below low. So thinking it might be a blocked oil filter or something I change the oil and put in fresh 5w30. It made little difference. I then reeplaced my sender with an OEM as mine was rusty, thought it may be the issue, but it still is way below low but moves a bit when started ( but not even to the low mark ). Any ideas here?

I have a buddy of mine has 01 same issue but never a problem I think they just run that low I think if that's the case Toyota should have made a lower pressure gauge to read high for peace of mind

Not just low, below low. It was working fine with good pressure. I beleive the heaver weigh oil I used screwed it up somehow. Like a spring sprung but I don't believe there are spring in the gauge.

The OP's gauge looks exactly what my 1997 T100 V6 with synthetic oil looks like at idle. Reeeeeeeeeeaally low. And has been NO problems for me.

Looks normal for the 2002... except my ‘idle low’ never drops below where the needle is sitting in that pic (unless engine is turned off). My idle (no foot on gas) sits just as pictured. Never fluctuates off that spot.

    Is yours fluctuating?

I’m new to the Tundra. My first week saw low oil pressure.
I replaced the oil pressure sender with a generic unit.
    It worked poorly.
I reordered the factory sender AND a factory oil filter.
    Works perfect now.
Not sure if it was the filter or sender.
    Either way, it’s perfect now.

So I too am new to my 2002 Tundra with 57K miles. My oil pressure gauge does not work and I am not getting an oil idiot light on the dash. Is there such a light or only a gauge?

Before you start the engine, you should see a red oil can lamp somewhere on the dash. It does that as a means for you to see that the lamp works. That's why all those lights illuminate prior to starting the engine.
