I found old gasket debris and even a few wire wheel bristles in mine for a few oil changes after. I took pictures of what the filter caught each time to document. I think its BS Toyota doesn't include an oil change with this procedure. I did my next few changes at shorter intervals after the repair.

It's too bad they don't keep that crap from ending up in the crankcase. What you are finding getting caught in the filter was pumped there by the oil pump. Not healthy for the pump to deal with that stuff.

One of the reasons I would be hesitant to get this issue repaired. Might be better off just cleaning the oil off every few thousand miles.

I’m not sure mine is leaking, need to pull splash guards out of the way and get a better look when it stops raining here.
As far as just cleaning the oil off and not repairing, depends on how old & how many miles are on it.
A leak isn’t going to get better.

While I’m totally with you that more care should be taken by the shop, there’s NO WAY I’m letting a leak go un-repaired.
My ‘17 is still under warranty. (CPO buy)
If my truck wasn’t under warranty I might think differently but No Way In Hell I’m letting it slide when they’re going to eat it.

Same here, plus mine was bad enough it was leaking onto the heatshield and smoking some. You could smell it in the cab, I also had concerns about it. Its a very extensive repair.

That is exactly how I will deal with this if it happens to my 2018. So far, 40,000 miles and totally clean (both sides). But if it starts to seep I can spray it down with some Gunk engine cleaner (once every two weeks or so) and hose it off. I should be able to stay ahead of it so it doesn't drip on the heat shields. This would only take five minutes each time. I am not going to pull the engine down to fix this and will absolutely not let anyone else do this either (dealer or independent mechanic).

Just checked mine for the first time in i donno probably a year and it still looks about the exact same without even a drop. Just a little wet passenger side only. About 33k miles. So i though it would have gotten worse?

Changed my oil yesterday with 600 miles since the procedure. Not a speck of anything but oil. And the engine is running great.

Looks like what the dealer/Toyota will call a "seep", but yeah.

Two ways to look at this, you got lucky and nothing fell in the motor, or its still stuck somewhere inside. Hopefully you got lucky, I would still shorten my next interval just in case, if comes out clean then go back to normal oil change interval.

Awesome. It's a 2018 with 26K miles I just bought three weeks ago. Any advice on how to proceed?

Hey, you made it longer than mine! Unless that's why the previous owner got rid of it and the dealer just wiped it off... I'd go have the dealer look at it and at least get it documented that it's in the beginning stages. Again, they'll probably call it a seep and won't do anything at this point.

Agreed, planning to change it again in another 500-1000 miles. $40 well spent IMO.

Taking mine in tomorrow to have the techs look at mine... leaking both sides. Can’t wait to hear what kind of BS they toss my way.

I got hit today for it. $3,200 for it. I have the 4.6L 2012 Tundra. The new sealant in the fix is completely different I've been told. Dealer was nice at least. I raised a stink with Corporate. We'll see what they do.

There's a simple fix. We need several people nation wide to stand outside, on the sidewalk, out in front of Toyota dealerships with big signs and flyers on a given Saturday. You'll get local news followed by national news. This would be the first auto protest. Hand the flyers out to every Tundra that passes! It probably wouldn't take much to get on national news because it would be so odd and first ever.

There is a legal firm looking into a possible class action lawsuit. Probably won't do anything.
