Btw this took so long because of some usps facility consolidation issue

I guess doing 10k oil changes does no harm
& all those early oil changes to pull out metal debris is a waste of time, money, & natural resources

I wonder how many peeps are performing unnecessary oil changes
I used to be one of those people
    Lol

5k OCI vs 10k OCI isn’t so much about metal wear IMO - it’s about sludge. If you think oil with a flashpoint of 380 is doing great - I don’t know what I can say. You didn’t get a TBN to determine how much, if any, life that oil had left.

It’ll depend on the manufacturer and weight but should be in the 400s. Mobil1 5w-30 came back at 480.

I found a virgin oil analysis of Toyota 0-20 for comparison.

I called blackstone & spoke with Brian
He clearly stated that my engine is fine, no metal debris & I should continue with 10k oil change interval
I will get another analysis done at my 130k oil change (in about a month) with TBN this time so we can clear that up

Awesome man. Thanks for taking the time to do this. Can’t wait for the results. How much idling do you do? Noticed just a trace of fuel in your sample.

    I idle a lot
I live in snow country, east of the cascades & 30 mins south of crater lake, so I often let my tundra warm up for 15-20 mins before I drive it especially this time of year

You’ve definitely proven 10K could be done. How often do you check your oil? Any oil burn?

If you are talking about checking the oil via dipstick, never
I drain the oil, remove filter, put 7.75 quarts in & drive another 10k
    Then repeat
I have not checked the oil dipstick/level once in 3 years/125k miles

For shits and grins. Check the oil level before you change the oil. I’d like to know if the level stays the same or it drops some. If it stays the same that’s pretty damn impressive.

My 3.5 Ecoboost does not use any oil between changes either. I have gone 16,000km (10,000mi, the oil life monitor suggested OCI) a few times but typically change at 10,000km. What surprises me is that the level does NOT decrease even though I "catch" probably 1/4 to 1/2 litre of grunge in my catch can. It's a smallish catch can so I dump it every 1500kms (900mi).

I switched over to 5W-30 at my last change at 15K miles. I change every 7,500, currently have 19K and change on it. I'll be changing the oil again in about 2-3 months and have analysis done at that time. I can say, I noticed no loss in mileage and the engine runs smoother and quieter. Analysis at 15K with 0W-20 showed everything was good, so I'll be able to see if the 5W-30 had any detrimental effects. I still don't believe the metal shaving excuse from Toyota, but that's just me. Time will tell if my 2024 hybrid, with no recall, craps the bed or not. Either way, not worried about it. If it does, I'll have a fat extended warranty from Toyota to foot the bill.

If you put on 125k miles in 3 years you are going to have good results from Blackstone. This shouldnt be a surprise.

Its the people who are driving 10k a year doing 10k mile OCI's, short tripping their trucks, and not towing much that are probably gunna see worse results from fuel dilution.

Let me guess, your catch can is the dual valve kind? And is it mounted in front of the radiator? If so, you're getting that much because your catch can is mostly catching water and fuel because its being hit by cold air and condensing it all out. Very little oil makes it out the baffles on the valve cover.

I ran dual catch cans(one for the PCV on the passenger side, and a second for the CCV on the driver side) that were mounted to my firewall, where its much warmer, and so it caught very little water and fuel. The cans would only have an ounce or two of oil after a few thousand miles.

Nope, just a simple JLT can mounted to the battery bracket which sits midway back in the engine compartment so stays plenty warm.

Interesting, and its all actually oil? It doesn't separate out if you let it sit? My original can would catch a lot like yours, but 90% of it was not oil. It looked like some extravagent Starbucks drink if you let it settle out for 5 minutes in a cup after draining.

What is the purpose of the catch can? It is not needed for carbon build up like it was on my ford ecoboost. With the port injection it all stays clean in the new Toyota engines.
