First post here. This might be a no-brainer.Local dealership has a 2017 Platinum with moonroof that is CPO with 40,xxx miles with a few accessories such as tonneau cover and side steps asking $40,000.
Another dealership about 2 hours away has several new 2018 Limited with Premium Package,TRD Off Road.MSRP $48445 will sell for $42078.
Does the sunroof, cooled seats, power adjustable steering wheel etc. of the Platinum trump a new 2018 that has less options/creature comforts but does come with TSS,updated LED headlights, new warranty etc?
I might be able to get the 2017 for less than asking.I wish the miles were less though.Either way,I would like to avoid buyer's remorse. Thanks for any opinions/advice.

I love the cooled seats and sun roof in my car. I also don't like to travel far. The 2017 sounds like a good deal but 40xxx miles is a lot in a year. You are in Vermont how often would you really use the seats? The sunroof is nice but it is another item to break plus with the Crewmax and roll down rear window you don't really need it. I went with an SR5 trim instead of Platinum. If figured with out leather wouldn't need cooled seats and like i said about the rear window. I don't use it as a daily so I am fine with my trade-offs.

I would go for the 2018. The headlights and upgraded instrument cluster alone are worth it. Also, 40k in one year is a lot. Not a huge deal, but still high.

I didn't know you could get leather seats in an SR5?

Yes 2018 for sure. And you will have about 3 or so years until YOU put 40k on it. Will you still owe 40k in 3 yrs.... doubt it. Just my .02. Plus being on this site will pretty much give you any and all mods and upgrades you could ever want

    2018 would be my choice.

40k in a year in a half is a lot of miles. You sure they did the proper maintenance?

I would go 2018. Think about the warranty as well. Unless you buy extended or the dealer adds it in the 2017 is already out of bumper to bumper. Also compare the interest rates between new and used, might be cheaper in the long run to buy new.

I drive a lot of miles in a year but not 40K so that would make me think twice. For the small difference I would go with the 2018 Limited

Theres more to it than the interior. Do you like chrome? The grill and bumpers are different.

I only skimmed this thread but take into consideration folding mirrors and auto dimming mirrors... those are not on my Limited and they are two features i miss very much from prior better finished vehicles. The platinum has these features.

I went through a similar dilemma when purchasing mine, but it was between a new 2018 Limited and a new 2017 Platinum. I went with the 2018 Limited for the reasons people have stated above. The only thing I regret is not getting a 2018 Platinum!

There is approximately a $3500 difference between the 2018 Limited and the 2018 Platinum. Not sure it's worth the $$$.

cosmetics are easiest to swap out and cheap for those who prefer a different look. but installing the platinum dimming / folding mirrors is a real bear, not easily retrofitted.

on the 2017 platinum you still get LED strips on headlights for modern look, plus all the other comforts. if you want to swap in the 2018 headlights down the road it is a cinch! The options on a limited are really...well...limited. it is pretty bare bones. there was so little change between 2017 and 2018.

40,000 miles though is a bunch on a used truck.

I have talked myself out of that one. There are not a lot of low mileage Platinums near me.If I want a CPO Platinum I will have to expand my travel distance.

You can't unless you go after market. So since I was stuck with cloth I was fine with out a cooled seat

The platinum leather is much, much nicer than what comes on the limited. The cooled seats are nice to have but not a huge deal. $42k looks like a 2wd. A new 2wd platinum should be around $45k

As others have said 40k miles is a lot in a year.
I'd go for the new limited and try to work them a little more on price.

    I'd go with 17.

40k miles is high that means those are highway miles. Avg consumer does 15k max in city driving per year. Highway miles are not bad thing when it is only 40k. If this was, lets say 2014 with a 40k, I'd pick the brand new one no doubt.

With the 17 year, not only you get a higher trim, you also get tonneu cover, side steps etc. Those things add up like crazy. I know because I am still struggling to come up with funds to justify spending that amount of money on mine.

Remember when you buy the brand new one, the moment you drive off the lot with papers signed, it is now a used truck. With the 17 one, you are not the one hurting by the depreciation after a year.

In terms of stereo or headlights, those are personal preferences. Headlights, you are going to be plug and play because you are high trim and it is going to cost you ~$750 at absolute max. Same thing for the sound system but that again is personal preference. You may be okay with your JBL in the 17 which is not that bad in my opinion or you may decide to spend 5k on a sound system.

I'd take the truck to a third party and have them do pre purchase inspection. That will cost you couple of hundred bucks but it may save you thousands in negotiating. I've done that before and it did save me money. Another time I did not do it and turned out car was in a minor accident. I found that out when I went under the car after couple of months and discovered all the different components. It is not a good feeling whatsoever. I had the car for the weekend, arrived at my Saturday appointment the next day at a local accident repair shop and they checked like 300 different things. It will either give you a piece of mind at the end, tell you to walk away from it or help you negotiate the price down.

Depending on how comfortable you are with the seller, just tell them "I can get a brand new one with 0 miles for 2k more. Lower your price or extend my warranty and we can close this deal now" and see what they do.

Do you have a Carfax for the used one? If they did their oil change on time, that usually means they took care of it. In addition, it is very easy to find owner's home address from a license plate online. Find out where they live and you can judge what kind of owner(s) it had. One of my previous cars, I even sent the previous owner a letter saying "hey I have your car you got any do(s) or don't(s) for me?" lol

Good luck on your decision. Either way, those are two great options. I'd personally pick the 2017 one. 40k miles is nothing for these trucks especially highway miles.

To me the platinum is well worth the $ 3,500 more...over 5 year note that does not add up to a lot of money.

You get - folding mirrors, turn signal display in mirrors, driver memory seat (2 settings), ventilated seats, a lot nicer leather seats, nicer rims, door stills, both front seats have storage / pockets behind each seat, painted front end, and I am sure there are a few other minor additions I am forgetting. To me, just the seats in the Platinum is worth like 2K more at least than the seats in the limited.

I would get the new Limited. I have a new Platinum that replaced my totaled basically new Limited. I like them both and spent more money for the Platinum because of the features. I would do it again. I wouldn’t buy a used one with 40K miles over a new limited though.

Go for the 2018. I traded in for a 2018 limited and love it. I was worried about the TSS stuff at first, but i got over it. The one and only thing i dont like about the 2018 is the stupid adaptive cruise control, god its annoying.

Tough call, I was in a similar situation when I bought my Tundra. My choices were a new 2017 1794 or the 2018 Limited and the 1794 would have been 1200.00 cheaper. I opted for the 2018 Limited because I wanted the new instrument cluster and TSS-P. And yes, the Platinum (or 1794) seats are a higher grade leather.

My next truck will be a loaded Platinum or 1794 when the next gen Tundra comes out.

Thanks for all the great feedback so far. I'm leaning toward the Platinum because of all the upgrades of this trim level. The truck I was interested in was sold yesterday so I may have to expand my search area.I want to spend less than $40K and it must be CPO.1794 Edition is not out of the question although I'm not in love with the color of the leather or the wood trim.
