My truck is going in for his first service here in a couple days the 5000 one, here I thought they actually change the oil but I guess they’re just rotating the tires and doing a couple checks. This motor being the old technology over 10 years old but with new oil‘s and synthetics what is everyone’s thoughts on going 10,000 miles on oil changes or do you still do every five

I shoot for around 5k-7k. Been doing that with my last 3 vehicles and have had zero issues (full synthetic of course). In fact my last 2 (nissans) have had golden oil at about 7k miles and the techs didn't believe that I hadn't had the oil recently changed. I figured if I take care of the engine oil and filters the cars should run well for a looong time.

Honestly the 10K mile oil change scares the hell out of me. But, I am going to follow the manufacturers recommendations for my non FFV. Since I have a lifetime engine and power train warranty, along with free oil changes for life I figure as long as I get my vehicle serviced at the dealership I shouldn’t have any issues.:fingerscrossed:

The shop I use (fuck Toyota care) recommends every 7500 even with mobile 1. I just had them do a 3000k oil change idk if it matter but it puts my mind at rest lol so fuck it money well spent. But I’ll prolly do it every 7500. @92 and oil change every 7500 is still pretty good considering a cars every 3k @ 30$ Shop prices not on your own

Depends on what gas you're running thru it. If you're running pure gas then you might be able to get away with it. But if you're burning an ethanol blend I would stick to 5k. If you're doing e85 some of the time (FFV) then you may need to bump it down to 3,500. Toyota actually mentions it in the manual. I use an 'up to 10% ethanol' 87 octane gas and do it every 5k.

I do 5k miles with Mobil 1 0w20. I tow a lot and the manual says to stick to 5k for that.

actually its 5k miles if using 50% or less than E85 fuel or 2500 miles if using E85 fuel more than 50%, otherwise you follow

this only applies to engines that are flex fuel. even the maint. log says 5k/6m "replace engine oil and filter"

the non FFV engine is 10k oil changes and the maint. log shows oil change under the 10k entry.

    FFV maint log : https://www.toyota.com/t3Portal/document/omms-s/T-MMS-18TundraFFV/pdf/T-MMS-18TundraFFV.pdf

non FFV maint log : https://www.toyota.com/t3Portal/document/omms-s/T-MMS-18Tundra/pdf/T-MMS-18Tundra.pdf

In my 16 Gen 3 Tacoma I followed the manufacturers guidelines and had the dealer do it every 10,000 and didn't have an issues, but I got rid of the truck at 41,000 so it was still early. I will have to place some trust in Toyota, I can't believe they'd put their reputation of quality on the line for no real reason by recommending changes at intervals that are too great.

The wife is on her 2nd lease vehicle, both GX460's, same oil recommendations - even for first change. Was kind of surprised, but since it is a lease don't really care as much. The oil doesn't look bad when checked.

I used Castrol Syn on both Tacomas and did 7500 mile changes. I put almost 100k on both and never a problem. There is no difference in the short block on a FFV (what service writer told me) so I am guessing the only reason for 5k is the type of fuel.

Have you guys seen those commercials that were on a while back, I think it's for a Castrol brand of oil, they claim it's the "once a year oil change" oil, I think they allege you can change it every 20,000 miles. I don't think I'd take that risk.

I'm doing my first oil change myself at 1,000 miles (this weekend) but that's mostly because I want to go ahead and install my Fumoto valve.

When they can run an F1 engine w/turbos and race fuel for 20k miles w/o damage, then I'll believe it.

people are funny, even comparing F1 engines to car engines? C'mon. In today's day and age, you have more than enough information at your fingertips to figure out that the manufacturers have improved in the past 40 years.

and if you REALLY want to know, get your oil samples done, blackstone etc, spend the 35 bucks and save yourself hundreds. Easy math there.

    Again, coconut oil.

It was a little tongue-in-cheek, but I think you missed the point anyway of 'if it'll hold up that long in extreme conditions then it'll be fine in our trucks regardless of what power adders we throw on them'.

For normal use, in non FFV engines, 10,000 miles is good with me. 3k and 5k changes are old thinking when using a full syn like Mobile 1, plain and simple. Do a 3-5k change and send it to Blackstone. Do a 10k change and send it to Blackstone. I'm going to guess you keep doing 10k changes from that point forward.

Why do we all "trust" 3k oil changes anyway?... Because there was a time when that was the recommended interval by experts such as the manufacturers of the vehicles, and the oil. The experts have moved on...

I would love to see you go 10k miles on E85, heck I would like to see what it looks like after 5k on E85 :)

but then again I think you didn't read the maint. manual on the FFV engines
