I thought about it. Could almost get what I paid 5 years ago when I bought it used. With 3x the mileage and a few bumps and bruises. Figured I’d do this, save the money, lease a Dardge Ram for 2.5-3 years and let the market return to not crazy and buy a new gen 3 at the end of the lease. I’m driving less than 8-10k a year so this made some sense for me. Hard to think anything will return to not crazy anymore though.

But, I like not having a payment and now I really like its leveled look and ride with the foxes and 295’s. Also, bird in the hand….

I’m trying to break a bad financial habit by keeping my truck for 10 years. I used to buy new every 3 years.

My question right now is what would I replace my truck with if I sold it? We own a house and we like to camp so I can't see getting by without a truck.

I could get 15G in my pocket if I sold my truck, but what am I going to replace it with? I would have to overpay for any other vehicle, if I could find one I wanted. Just not worth it. I have a good truck, next one could have issues, too much of a gamble and no real benefit because whatever I "earned" from selling would disappear because new and used prices are so high.

Same boat I'm in - truck goes away. And so does boating, snowmobiling, camping....

Nothing to fill the gap. Seems like there are lots of people that wouldnt mind cashing in, but the opportunity coat is too high.

The only thing that might make sense for me would be selling it for a much older, higher mileage Tundra that has been well cared for. I could get all my money back on my current truck, maybe a bit more, and find a 2010-2013 that I would still overpay for in this market, but it would probably be around $25k. I could transfer all my mods over and dump $25k-ish into whatever investments I wanted.

The thing is, this is my first new vehicle, my first truck, and the first vehicle I know the complete and total history of. That all holds too much value for me. Plus, I live in a state with no vehicle property tax. It costs me $90 to put a plate on any vehicle, no matter the value or model year. :notsure:

I consider it all the time. I love my truck though. Our plan is to pay it off and see where the market is. That’ll take us another 3-4 years. I’m very interested in the Hybrid TRD Pro but it just doesn’t make sense for us to get one now in this market. I’m trying to patiently wait.

Therein lies the rub. The market is so stupid right now, that finding a replacment truck is unlikely and if you find one then buying it at a reasonable price is purely impossible. Trucks with 130,000+kms on them are selling for more than they did new 2 years ago.

My worst fear is some sort of wreck resulting in a total loss. Id pocket the $ and putt putt my ScoutII and work truck around until the insanity chills. But then have to hunt for the same unmolested config/color/year again and it took a freakin year to find it before..

Sure, I considered it for exactly 0.1 seconds...

Then I was fortunate to wake up from the nightmare, look out side and see my dream truck in my driveway... A supercharged 2017 MGM Platinum Pro'd out Tundra, with a glorious Boosted V8 with a DD TRD dual exhaust that sounds just Soooo right. Why would I give that up for $ that I never intended to get back in the first place? This is not a stock market and I wouldn't sell my truck for the same reason why I bought it.. I bought it to keep for a long time and always have a V8 under the hood.

We have three vehicles right now and I don't tend to use my truck for its intended purposes much during the winter so I could probably muddle through until spring if I had to. But by March the availability of vehicles meeting my desires tends to thin out in an average year. God knows what it would be like these days.

I’m considering selling mine PURELY because we just had our 4th child and we have a brand new Expedition that I can’t justify upgrading to the Expedition Max so the truck might go. Otherwise no, I love my truck.

I never sell, always trade. Not worth the hassle of dealing with people for a little more money plus in my state the trade in tax break puts the financial value closer to private party price.

Selling - possibly….but only because I’m not highly invested in my newest, it’s a 2nd vehicle that gets little use and when prices come back to reality - I’d buy again.

Wont though as prices are unlikely to be lower for 3+years - finding another clean ‘19-21 at a significant discount in that time seems unlikely and mine is set up like I like.

To be fair - only thing else out there that even remotely gives me “buyers remorse” is the interior in the Ram upper trims. But then I remember Ram owners and the constant issues and I think no - even a low mileage vehicle is too great a risk to take when your talking a 55k+ purchase price.

And realistically- 55k is probably not getting me a 4wd Limited used these days or the right Power Wagon to make it worth the jump. Not a real fan of the Rebel - never liked the Laramie…so it’s Limited or the other western themed limited (name escapes me) - I liked but just couldn’t convince myself to love it more than a Tundra (To be fair the Tundra is something I wanted since they were introduced - 20 years is a long wait)

Exactly. Or, "If I give you $20 can you hold this truck for six months until I get hired where my dad works?"

I sold my 2014 Jeep privately to fund my Tundra, and pocketed an extra 7k above my highest trade in offer including the tax offset. It's a sellers market now, take advantage of it.

My brother-in-law just purchased the same exact Tundra as I did exactly one year ago, the only difference being color -- and price. He paid $7,000 more than me.

Notwithstanding the upgraded tires and accessories I've added, $7,000 divided by all the hours I've spent on Tundras.com is a losing proposition for sure!

2020s are going for $50K to $60K here in Las Vegas. We're talking SR5 Crewmax 4x4s. It's definitely tempting, but theres nothing like that smooth power band that this 5.7 provides. I also plan to drop in a supercharger, so, I'm not selling.

I did that most of my adult life.
I did pay off my 1982 Camaro in 1986.
But after that, every 2 to 3 years I'd trade whatever in on a new one.

Broke that habit with my 1997 4Runner, then 2005 Tundra, then 2014 Tundra.

Can't imagine out much money I would have if I'd kept my 1988 Chevy stepside, 1991 Pathfinder, or 1994 Chevy ext cab stepside for 10 years or more..
Although I'd have to figure in the repair work cost to keep those Chevys runnin'.....:D

Oh wow, yeah those numbers are pushing into the tempting territory for sure. If only I had that beater truck I've always wanted sitting around to get me through the current shortage... I love that my Tundra fires up every time, something my '18 Ford did not!
