can someone explain why an electrician would mount my ultra slim LED can lights like this? The rough-in crew already had the wire hanging down to hook to. All it took was a hole saw (over the small hole with the wire hanging down) but no, they had to drill the light hole next to the existing hole. SMDH.

They used a hole saw and can't stabilize the drill bit in a preexisting hole

Back before wifi was stable a costumer wanted his house wired for network. I did the work before dry wall went up, left like a 2ft service loop at the boxes. Asswipe drywallers cut the wire, all the way up to the conduit. Left nothing to work with. Home owner, who was a Dr. made drywaller pay for new wire runs. Lucky that it was all in conduit. (He was big on overkill).

Yes but the light hole is much larger than the wire hole. They could have punched the drill bit through next to it and still covered it up.

Its a mindset or common sense (lack of)

They looked at the hole and knew they couldn't use it.
They wouldn't think of using it so they avoided it due to past times they tried to use a hole.
In their mind they thought of putting the bit in there and knew it wouldn't work.

Was the holes straight in line?
How close was the wires to the roof rafters?
We had some very similar stuff go on at our house like that. Only it was the vanity lights, they were to low.
I bet he has a reason why he done it.

18 lights all done the same way. The existing wire holes were all in between the rafters. They were already measured and straight with the walls.

I would love to hear what he has to say then, sorry about the holes. We just finished our new home and it about killed me with all the nonsense that went on. At least that can be fixed, give me a min and I’ll make you feel better.

Lol. It must be normal. I've already replaced a plumbing run in the wall that the framers punctured with a nail, and had to rip out a 16' tall section of Sheetrock so the HVAC company could replace the refrigerant line punctured by the siding folks. Windows framed in wrong size. Doors mounted the wrong direction, etc.....

I’ve been looking at this and trying to figure out what possible reason there could have been. Literally the only thing I can think is that the existing hole was too close to a rafter, so there wasn’t room to cut the hole. I’m assuming the electrician cut the original hole though, so that would just be a screw up they planned to fix anyway.
It wouldn’t have been because they needed to be closer to a rafter to mount their box. First, the box would have been there before sheet rock. Second, those lights don’t generally need a box. They just clip to the sheet rock. Here’s what the back of those looks like, if that helps.

    86461480-9A5E-4505-BAB0-606B1FFA7E33.jpg

The only other thing it could have been was them moving it over so they could mount the driver to a rafter.

This is my detached garage floor, the door guy busted out sections because he didn’t “think” he had enough room. It is recessed down to keep water out 557D0D4F-DA01-4E99-885F-B8E0B307D3E8.jpg

Smart move. Just recently had a house built it was finished less than a month ago and I had to go thru a few things towards the end when they where either rushing or got lazy. All the water sources had hot and cold mixed up, they ruined two water heaters by not letting them fill before turning on so the heating elements burned out, and they stained the hard wood floors but didn’t move the dishwasher out so it wasn’t stained underneath. They all came back and fixed it

I think the sheetrockers moved the wires a few inches and messed up the measurements..happens alot in the trde..only thing i can think of unless electricians cant measure!!

Best part is that you think a brand new house has no issues for a while. Mine is not quite five years old, and I’ve had issues. An ac unit went out in the first year, faucets that had to be replaced, a water leak in a wall, and saw this last night:

    F2F7F8C7-9A58-4D76-A784-38F31D927711.jpg

Don’t know if it’s a water leak or AC issue.

Talked to an AC buddy this morning, and he thinks it’s an ac line that’s not insulated properly, so it’s getting condensation.

There is good money to be made in the trades. All it takes is attention to detail and some common sense.

We've been contemplating building another new home. I'm resisting due to the amount of BS I'd be dealing with like this.

yes there is good money in all trades. I do lawn sprinklers and landscape lighting and do quality work. the problem is homeowners usually go with the cheaper price! It is very rare i can do a job and not have other trades screw my stuff up or hold me up. I just got back from a job that the owner hired another company for an install that I originally bid on. I was slightly higher in price with less product. many companies over install sprinkler heads for future repairs. ling story short I have to fix stupid! this is not the first time this has happened. I went to court as an expert for one customer to testify . There are many poor companies out there amd poor employees

As an electrician myself, my best guess is that the wires roughed in were sticking out the small holes and the guys didn’t want to cut or damage them while cutting the can light hole with a hole saw so they moved there centerline over and figured tapers will fix it. Even if they were to stuff the wires back into ceiling then use hole saw they could damage wires resting above Sheetrock. It’s laziness and poor craftsmanship for sure.

Yep. It’s tough to get people to see that quality work is going to cost more. There’s always a lower price. I get people asking me to recommend a “good, cheap electrician” all the time. I tell them they can’t have both, and I’d be glad to recommend a “good, fair electrician”.

That's actually easy. Use the smaller hole saw size as the arbor bit and stack the larger on to cut your desired size.

Good luck cancelling that noise though. It's a task and a half to get that cancelled. I had to request my bank stop paying.

Poor employees for sure, I do painting and I have yet to find a good employee. I can also relate you your customers looking for cheap pricing and then giving me a call back to fix the crap work, and now they are spending more then my original bid. Problem with the trades is no one is on the same page, if all the painters in an area got together and said the going rate is going to be x amount then customers wouldn't be pursuing a cheaper option because it wouldn't be there. Second issue is there is always a guy around the corner without a business license, the correct insurance etc. This hurts the guys actually trying to make a living off there trade.

Interesting issues. Before selling my house this past May, found out the 1995 builder only "mudded" on one half of the drywall tape area, left the other half "un-mudded". 18 foot ceilings with wrinkles at nearly every seam and some room corner joint seams - wrinkled. Million-dollar home.

Yeah, we tore it all out and re-did it:$xxxxx.xx.
    Therapy: $xxxxx.xx.
    You do that mistake ONCE.
