If you need some inspiration, look up the taco’d tundra thread and the GX rebuild. It’s amazing what some people can do when motivated. I want to see the outcome of this mess, I mean, project.

I would have had that mofo back within 24 hrs. OP obviously has other priorities, and that's ok, too.

I like the fortitude and am still pulling for success.
As far as why everything was taken apart? It would be ironic but id guess he was parting it out.

I just need someone to tell me about the timing of this engine. Not to sure on the OHC thing. If their on the marks, is that the only setting or can they be out 180 ? And all the youtube video's I watched , some say to line cams up on the lines and some say to line up on the "T". which is it? I need your help getting this right the first time. I'm a little confused on this, but still looking forward to getting this thing going. Aint giving up!!!

    Dude.

I've linked you to what you need to read on this at least two or three times now, IIRC.

Here it is again: Here is how to validate timing

Please. Stop watching videos. Read that forum. Print out that page. Do whatever you gotta do, but that WILL help you set the timing right. No questions. No bullshit. Just straight-up, how to do this right the first time.

I guess I need to be easier on him, I only gave him the info twice, once in reply #17, which was one of my first suggestions: Validate timing belt/timing, which didn't get done until about 4-5 pages later

    Then again on reply #124.

    So only twice, not thrice.

Anyway, that snapping sound @tompands is a bit concerning. Lets hope it was just a stuck valve freeing up...

If I were you, I'd forego changing the water pump for now if the old one isn't obviously frozen/broken. Get timing sorted, and just install a new tensioner and belt, spin all the pulleys to confirm they're functional and not fucked. Then set timing with new tensioner and belt.

This way, if the engine fails compression test later, i.e. it's fucked (assuming you set the time correctly of course), you can pull the belt off, pull the tensioner off and reset it, and use it on the new engine so it doesn't go to waste.

Just calm down everyone, let the guy have some time to work on the truck.
I think he's more than skilled to work on this, but just need time, which he states he has more than ample.

@shifty` remember the dude that almost pulled and swapped out everything on his truck in FL and has an awesome yard close by that we both almost see him go daily if not every other day?
Every build is different, and while this one is challenging and shitty, I think he will be fine with you guys' guidance, just let him work it.
    Worst case, new (used) engine....

Well, latest update........my timing kit came in Friday night, spent all day Saturday cleaning the engine, doing the water pump, and installing the timing belt and installed the new starter (That sucks). I was gonna leave it at that point until I come back from a cruise I'm going on next weekend, but I couldn't leave it. I went out today and rechecked all my timing marks, double checked everything I've done so far, and said Ok, I need to know.
I pulled the pin on the tensioner and tried spinning it over. Got about 4 cranks on the ratchet and it stopped dead. Backed it up and tried again. This time it pasted that spot. Cranked another 5-6 cranks and stopped dead again. this time it wouldn't go any further. I guess I'm lookin for another motor. Probably just buy another parts truck that runs. There are a couple on copart that are hit in the ass that would give me all the parts I need, we will see , I shut the hood, put my tools up and I'm going cruising in 5 days. That jap can sit in the back yard and wait for me to go back at it.

This is exactly why members here always emphasize the timing belt and related parts and procedures before proceeding with anything else. We've seen and know enough of the importance. Not dumping on you. It sucks. Hope it works out somehow.

Hopefully the shit for brains previous owner owns up to the offer to refund you $1000
That would be a nice step towards a coPart purchase of a rear ended truck, probably get one of them for around a grand, sometimes less.
