So my factory toyota batter just died at 2 years and 8 months. Pretty crappy in my opinion. I decided to upgrade to the x2 agm sold by batteries plus /northstar made. How often is everyone charging with a wall charger like the ctek 7002 ? Once a month or more?

If charging on a regular basis is the alt s voltage booster fuse mod even required or should i skip it and keep that fuse as is?

If you aren’t running any modifications to boost running voltage, ide go at least once a month to top it off.

ok. That sounds good. I didnt know if the wall charger would be sufficient or if i needed both. Thank you both Danny and Ron

Personally, I think this scenario is overrated. I don't think the diode or charging it (besides the alternator) is needed.

I had an O'reilly Gold AGM (same as the old Sears AGM) in my FZJ80 & I never charged it or anything extra. It ran a winch, lots of lights, a Dometic fridge & other junk. I went 3 days in August in Texas keeping the fridge @ 38° w/out starting the truck & it started no problem. Battery was @ 11.4V. Inside of truck was ~135° so it was a battle to keep fridge that cold. I ran that battery for over 5 years & it was still working great when I sold it. The alt. on that rig was only 90A (I believe) & it charged the battery @ 14.2 or less (depending on what all was running, idle speed, etc. but never above 14.2V, usually ~13.8V).

Do you isolate the battery completely when you do this?

if you really care get the hbk booster, but for 0.5v boost, its not worth it (speaking from experience).

Not really an even comparison. Tundras are voltage regulated to the battery to less than 13.8v. Most AGM batteries have a charging voltage requirement higher than what the regulator allows. Yours saw upwards of 14.2v, so it was being charged properly by the alternator.

Only when first started, cold, when idle was 1,000+RPM. That was about 30 seconds each day, which is nothing. Also, AGM says it needs 14.5-14.7, not 14.2V (for you believers). It will do no harm charging it but I also feel it will be no real benefit to longevity.

I charge my X2 about once a month also. Also pretty sure the current poplular voltage booster does not work for 2019+ trucks. But maybe there is a different one that does?

Read some manuals on AGM batteries and their charging profiles. The charging system in the Tundra doesn't match any AGM spec.

I'm not very happy with my current Battery (Toyota). Already been replaced once and Listening to the Sirius ran it dead while waxing less than two hours time. 7/18 Dated so what others have said about them appears to have some truth. I may give a AGM/ Diode some thought verses Interstate MTP-27F with Diode

I have. Still haven’t seen any issues. Have you seen issues using an AGM and not supplementally charging it?

I just run mine. Had one in previous truck and never messed with it either. These are good batteries IMO.

I believe he is talking about swapping the alternator fuse with the voltage boosting modules.

I put a Northstar 27F in early this summer and have charged it twice. (Most recently early this morning, because of this thread. ;) ) Both times the Smart Charger has indicated full/topped up battery and gone from charging mode, to maintenance mode, almost immediately.

I’d read there could be problems with Toyotas charging a big AGM and was prepared to order the diode, but so far my truck seems to be keeping up just fine.

I run a voltage boost since the day I installed my X2 and charge it every so often with a battery charger on AGM mode, but that's mainly since it sits for a week sometimes. Otherwise I'd never put it on a charger.

I'd rather not take the risk myself to see how long the battery lasts with the standard charging system. That's the issue might run in to. There are too many variables with battery useage to really study if the batter would die sooner with an improper charging profile. But of you read up on it, it might make sense to you that it's definitely better to make sure it's charged correctly

At any point, batteries die and need to be replaced no matter what. I'm not worried about being stranded since I have ways to keep going after a failed engine start due to dead battery, but if you're gonna she'll out extra money for an AGM, why not take care of it and ensure it lasts?

Sometimes one vehicle mod requires other mods to work correctly. Install a supercharger means switch to high octane fuel. Install a 4 inch lift, switch to adjustable UCAs. Add a bunch of heavy accessories and constant loads to the bed, upgrade leafs or air bags. Install an AGM battery, correct the charging voltage. Or you could skip these and either run into issues or not see the full potential of the mods you did

We are talking about two different things I think. :D I was talking about that fuse thing that plugs into your fuse box and boosts the voltage to the battery.

Yeah that thing...pretty sure they don't work on 2019+ trucks for some reason.

This thread is interesting. I've never once hooked my battery up to a charger. Ive always worked off the theory that my alternator is charging the battery. I've also never had a dead battery either. I'm replacing mine today with a Kirkland 24F since the one in my truck is ancient so I figured I'd premptively swap it out before winter. I'm keeping my old battery for now as a back up so I'll put it on a charger occasionally.

This pertains 100% to AGM (absorbed glass mat) batteries, not your average wet cell batteries.

This was true for the third gen Tacoma as well and the only way around it was OV tune or charge once a month or as needed.

I use this particular NOCO charger as it has a AGM and lithium capable.

What sets the 2019+ from a 2018? Just curious what the difference is

What did the OV Tune do for the battery charging?

Don’t know, but I switched to a newer calibration and had to remove my booster. Once operating temp was reached it constantly surged .5 volts. Removed and it’s fixed. Nothing wrong with booster, tested and it’s good.

I do not drive my truck much at all with all my working from home and anything local like grocery store, restaurant or things like that I use my Golf Cart.

I think I need a good trickle charger for AGM. I had a trickle charger on my AGM’s (had duals) on my LandCruiser and every time I parked it I plugged in the charger to the pig tail I made that come out the front grill. That did the job for me for well over 10 years
