Following as I want to know what the outcome was. I would follow the advice of all others. The conversation would have not gone well with me when they had the balls to say you owed them $280 for the new hinges.

Good luck OP keep us posted.

It's amazing to me that a tailgate has 1 moving part, and they STILL got it wrong. Unacceptable. Completely and utterly unacceptable.

Just wanted to give you guys an update. Picked up the truck on Wednesday and they installed new hinges and painted them white at there collision center at no charge. Then they actually fixed the real problem replacing the tailgate strut. Total was $380. I feel they made it right at the end and I’m glad to have my truck back. Thanks again to everyone who gave me feed back for this issue.

That is good to hear. Too bad you had to diagnose the problem yourself.

I had this happen to me in the opposite order. They replaced the strut first, covered under bumper to bumper warranty. Slow close worked for about a month before the bushing on the driver side hinge split in half and then that started causing the tailgate to slam again. Dealer immediately told me the bushing itself wasn’t sold separately. Bought the whole hinge. I’m going to try removing bushing off hinge and throwing it on my painted tailgate bracket

Yeah now I feel like the new strut they put in is still the soft open but it’s not the same how it used to be so now I’m thinking the hinges will need new bushings as well but I’m not a fan of the bare metal look

I’m going to try using bushing only from new hinge and putting it on original painted hinge tomorrow. I’ll let you know the result

Especially since it would be painfully obvious that the tailgate was not working as designed.

It’s not that simple. Either the strut OR the tail agate bushing can cause the slow open function not to work. I had to replace both. Looks normal until you look from the right angle, then you can see the bushing is cracked

Bad news, bushing does not come off the driver side tailgate hinge. Walked into the first body shop I drove by and they’re charging me 40 dollars and will be mixing fresh paint to match my color code.

Good to know. If it starts happening to my tailgate, I'll replace the bushings and the strut.

Glad it worked out, to me 380 dollars I would hold the tail gate as it went down. but that's just me

If you purchase hinge from Toyota ($60) then get the hinge painted ($40), you can then install yourself. Watch YouTube vid on Tundra tailgate removal, then read up on self install from forums on here, you could solve the problem for about 100 bucks

My Tundra is at the dealer now because the upper part the damper attaches to broke off. Dealer called me back and said there's no damper and the tailgate is supposed to slam down. Don't have a lot of confidence when I have to be the one telling the dealer to remove the driver side tail light to see that there is in fact a damper.

Will be an interesting fix, as far as I can tell it's a plate that's welded on that needs to be replaced.

My bearing broke years ago, I have the part, but I stripped the torx head on it, and have just dealt with it popping out in inopportune times.. like almost getting robbed and it decides to not go in and I have to pull it completely out and reset both sides....

I actually had such a difficult time removing that torx bolt that I snapped my tool. I knew I had to bring it to the local mechanic once this happened. They had a heavy duty torx screw driver that he could hammer as he loosened. Sucks that happened to you. mwy have to just drill it out at this point and order another bolt
