Would I regret a V6?

Hello, I'm looking to get my first truck, a 2014 Tundra with the 4.0L V6. Currently drive a Hyundai Tucson 1.6T and want a truck to haul my 10' kayaks, make Home Depot runs for home maintenance items, and occasionally tow an open motorcycle trailer (maybe twice a year). Most of the time I would be commuting with nothing in the truck but me. Would the V6 suit my needs just fine or would a V8 truly be necessary? I don't want to buy my first truck and have it not be powerful enough to fill my requirements. Of course I would get the V8 if I could easily afford it, but the V6 models are a little more affordable for me. Thanks for your help!

Thing is, that V6 has meh resale value. It would probably suite your needs just fine though. You won't be getting anywhere quickly with a pallet of cement blocks in the back. If you NEED a truck and can't afford the 5.7, just get it. If you can afford the 5.7, it is worth it. The big 3 put V6s in their half tons, so it's fine. V8 is not necessary. Will it make things better? Yes. Will it make things easier? Yes. Will it cost more? Yes.

Are you sure about that year? I think that 2013 was the last model year to have the V6. Got any pictures?

I think you should go with the V8 although you don’t need that much power but it’s nice when you need it and it’s for long term you don’t have to buy a V8 if you decided to haul a boat or trailer. :mudding:

Don’t buy the 4.0 for fuel mileage if a 2nd or 3rd gen is out of price range look for a 4.7 1st gen great trucks

I would get a Tacoma if I were going 6

Unless you are 6'4 it is a good Home depot, refrigerator delivery truck

Where do you live? If you are in Colorado going up and down mountain passes at elevation, then get the V8 for sure. If you are <2,000 or 3,000 ft elevation and it is really flat, then yes... the V6 might suffice, but you will still wish you had the V8 at times.

Get it for the price break. Dad got a 2010 V6 because he needed a truck for work. Tacoma was too small. Doesn't need the big V8. It's plenty. Gas mileage is about the same as the V8.

Based off of your description of needs, Get the V6, these V8’s are gas guzzling wasters.

    It would probably work ok.

Pedal Commander shows available for 4.0. Many on here are using PC to help drivability. May be worth looking into.

    Alot of them
I have had the V-6 and currently have the 4.6 V-8. Night and day difference power wise from the 6 to the 8. Here in Fl, the V-6 wasn't fast enough for the traffic. IMO, they should have never put a 6 cyl in a 6,000 lb truck. The 4Runner has the 4.0 but acceleration is a lot different in it compared to the Tundra with the 4.0. Get the 4.6 and add a Pedal Commander and I'm sure you will be happy. I am, and I am even running 34's.

I like the V8, step on it and it responds instantly. The power is there when you want it when you need it.

Seems like you would be better off getting a first gen 4.7 V8. smaller than the 2nd/3rd gens and better on gas but still highly capable

First gens are great trucks. and you can get carplay in there pretty cheap and not really be all that behind in tech that you would actually use.

Currently have a 2009 4.0L V6 DC, bought it in 2012 great deal could not pass up, no regrets, plenty of power, of course that is a relative term, tow occasionally 18.5 Flats Boat 2 hours, no issues. I was skeptical as well coming from a V8. But I live in SW FL, flat landscape. No problem on the HWY, keep it at 2000RPM 70-75 mph, its a truck not a sports car. Suits my needs, 170,000 miles no issues.

I faced the same decision many years ago. Bought a Silverado in 2003, and went with the cheaper v6. I hated driving that thing. When I bought my first Tundra in 2011 I pretty much had to learn to drive again. Between the acceleration and the new brakes, I looked like a teenager driving for the first time.

That's where I came from, test drove a brand new '95 GMC, totally gutless. I know V6 tech has advanced since then but why go 6 when you can have 8?

My only prolonged experience with a v6 was the 3VZ-E 3.0 in an 88 4runner. I loved everything about the runner and I'll own another someday but coming from that to the 3UR-FE I'll be swapping in an LS or some other small V8(or maybe a 1JZ-GTE because race truck:burnrubber:)

Our Venza is a V6, I like it, peppy, it's a size that a v6 will work great in. Our trucks, not so much.
