So after reading endless threads on FFV, gas types, oil changes, etc..... Should the FFV platform be avoided at all cost or would a FFV truck be acceptable if one was always planning to run 87 or higher octane? Would you still buy the truck if it was exactly what you want i.e. color, options, price?
    Thanks
    G

There is no problem with buying an FFV truck. I would never use ethanol simply because it has a lower energy density than regular gasoline and the idea of using corn as fuel is stupid.

Same here. I have a FFV and have never had any fuel related problems. I have never run E85 though, I stick to 89 with no ethanol from a local station. Corn is for feedin' critters not trucks.

I'd avoid it unless it was heavily discounted. I had a FFV Chevy before I bought the Tundra and had several problems. E85 requires a different compression ratio, specially coated pistons, and extra sensors that gas only systems don't require. E85 also causes emission control issues in some vehicles. One of the sensors went out in the Chevy. Chevy's price for the sensor? $750.00 Is it necessary even if you don't run E85? Yes, you have to have it to make sure the engine isn't running too rich or too lean, and to pass emissions tests. I managed to find a replacement at a much cheaper price, but other E85 related parts and sensors might not be available at a lower price.

Don't sweat it. When I was up in Anchorage most new gas trucks, irregardless of make that I saw on the car lots and just driving around up there in town were FFV. Anchorage gas stations have no BS E85 or even 10% ethanol. All gas up there is refined in Fairbanks and piped down to Anchorage. 100% pure North Slope dino juice...like I said...don't sweat it...

FYI....I run with Maverick pure dino 87 most of the time but occasionally I take advantage of grocery store fuel points and the gas is possibly up to 10% ethanol. I do have a non FFV motor..

Nah just don't use E85, I figure the FFV fuel system will be a little more tolerant of E10 and E15 if that ever becomes a thing

Mine is non-Flex, but I would not hesitate to buy a Flex. It seems that the kinks have been worked out now.

No matter what, I would not use E85. But it may come in handy in a Zombie Apocalypse.:D

I wish mine was flex. I have a different opinion on Ethonal. I converted my fuel system to run on E85 and E90. Made 950rwhp on E85 on my other Toyota. Coated pistons, anodized this, that is all just non-sense. The only draw back to E85 is if you don’t drive the vehicle and let it sit for long periods of time (months) as it draws in moisture.

The other issues such as oil or spark plugs is just using the right oil and plugs. Oil with zinc in it like Brad Penn or Shell Rotella and a spark plug greater heat rang or colder plug. E85has an Octane rating equal to 110.. The engine won’t pull as much timing, make more torque and less tendency to detonate since it’s a fuel than cools the cylinder as it vaporizes.

Oil just gets dirtier faster with FFV, that's the only negative i can think of. MPG is even shittier with E85, so if all things being equal on 2 trucks, i'd go with the non FFV one. If the FFV one was a grand or more cheaper, then i might consider that.

What Yota did you have that got 950rwhp? Just curious...

I have found the MPG issue to be a wash as E85 is much cheaper than 87 in Texas. Anywhere from $0.60 to a $0.80 cheaper in some seasons.

I'm not too sure how Toyota"farms" out the FFV Tundra. Whatever it is..doesn't make sense as in no ethanol based gas in AK but a Hell of a lot FFV trucks dumped there by barge in Anchorage...

I agree I owned a modified Fox Mustang and it made 950 rwhp on E85. then I moved to north Idaho and no E85 within 3 hrs of me...

It was a Dart 363 with a single 76 on it, 120lb injectors and 23 psi I liked E85 a lot when I could get it.

My 2013 tundra is ffv and I haven't had any problems. The ffv trucks have injectors with bigger fuel holes and the entire fuel system is coated to prevent rust from using the e85. The fuel pump is also stronger. So actually the ffv trucks are better from that stand point

My non FFV 07, as in 11 years old, is still running strong and no cam tower bs, and zero fuel delivery issues from my 11 year old non-FFV fuel pump...again...better in what regards???
