Got a free few cords of wood that I’m picking up today that needs splitting. I’ve also been offered s splitter to borrow but never used one. Are they easy, or are there any tricks to getting more wood out of it?

Very simple to use... we don’t bother setting them in the vertical position, horizontal work just as fast. And have a helper, makes everything smoother

Use common sense, take your time, and be careful. A friend of mine lost a part of his finger using one.

    Wear steel toe boots!
Watch your hands and fingers, and the helpers hands too.
Wear something to cover your eyes.
Try to put splitter and wood and the spot wood will be stacked in the same area. Or at least toss the split wood right into a trailer or wheel barrow so you're not lifting it multiple times. Stack it right the 1st time.
Pic is today of my toe from a log falling on it back in Feb. Wear steel toe boots lol.

Wear some eye protection, ear pro, gloves and pay attention to the splitter, keep your fingers away from the splitter...communicate with your helper...hand signals are fine.

I only use a splitting maul. One of my favorite things to do is go up and collect firewood every summer. My first "real" job was a deck hand on a logging crew, which eventually led to working as a tree faller. Love getting out in the mountains and doing that kind of work still. The splitting maul I think reminds me of summer weekends with my dad working out back splitting wood getting ready for the cold winters.

Log splitters are fine, but I won't use one until my body gives out and won't let me use the maul. I currently do all of my cutting and splitting on site in the woods - you can get more wood in the truck if it is split already. Makes for some great long days out in the mountains - some of my favorite days. Great workout, too. I look forward to it each year.

This can be debated but most people agree.. pine isn’t good to burn in a house (or really any chimney) so I’m hoping you’re splitting that for campfires???

I was gonna ask about the pine. I like finding pine around here because no one wants it for that reason. But I can use it to cook my maple syrup :) I do mix in hardwood but with all the pine being given away and the ease of handling it, I'm switching to mostly pine

Pine is fine - just make sure it is adequately seasoned, and make sure that you keep up on the maintenance of your chimney. Sure, I would love to burn only hardwood, as it is more efficient and cleaner. However, growing up, we burned what was available in the area - and that was pine. Nowadays, I do all of my cutting and splitting from dead and down in the massive burn areas around (we have had a lot of forest fires around here). The majority of the wood is some form of pine and some aspen. I run a catalytic Hampton woodstove, and have had absolutely no problems. Like almost anything, as long as you maintain it and follow proper procedures, it works just fine. But, like you said - it is always debated and "most" agree that you shouldn't burn pine. However, I've burned it for several decades with no issues.
