My 2014 Tundra 4x4 5.7L automatic transmission won't shift into 5th and 6th gear. Any ideas?

Do you have any background information?

When did it start happening, did you just get it serviced, did you just lift it, do you have any warning lights, have you checked the fault codes in the transmission control module yet? I ask because just because a dummy light hasn't turned on doesn't mean there's no fault codes.

    Doesn’t tow/haul mode not shift into 5th?

Tow haul mode does go into 5th and 6th obviously depending on other parameters.

The only thing I could think of is he possibly shifted into sport which defaults to S4 and will not shift above 4th gear

Not in sport mode. In automatic. Works fine for the first 10-15 mins, then won't shift I to 5th and 6th gears.

So I feel this is a stupid question.... how do you know it's not in 5th or 6th Gear?

Because when I'm driving at 55-65mph and tach is close to 3k rpm, I switch to sport mode and I'm in 4 gear. Then try to manually shift up into 5th gear and it won't.

Ok, so you’re doing this in manual (S) mode.

You need to be at a certain RPM where the engine would need to shift. My Corolla does this (2016) and wife’s Camry (2018)
Hell, a lot of my rental cars I’ve had for work do that too.

No, in automatic. Just switched to manual to confirm gears running.

But if you switch to sport mode even in 6th gear it drops you to 4th

I’d go see dealer on this. If it’s somehow fuse related you want the cause found. If it’s fluid related you want toyota fixing the leak and if it’s controller related you want toyota finding out why controller had problems.

Do you have a check engine light lit? If you do, can you get the truck scanned so we know what code is recorded?

Your truck is fine lol. Every one of you get up to speed on the highway in sixth gear. Then throw it in the S mode. The screen will say 4th. You’re still in 6th at that time, but next time you slow down and then speed back up it won’t let you shift above 4th until you do it manually

Unless it’s obvious it’s in 4th. Go 80 and listen to her roar, it will be obvious

Not true with mine. If I’m in drive and in sixth gear. If I drop it into S mode it goes right to fourth. The truck down shifts until I manually shift up.

Yes check engine light is on. And it won't shift any higher than 4th gear in manual or automatic. Solenoid?

Mine drops into 4th as well the second it gets put into sport mode.

And like I originally asked and others had mentioned have you by chance check fault codes? Because just because there's no dummy light doesn't mean that there is no fault and one of the control modules.

So what happens if you drive 80 miles an hour what are your RPMs?

So again like my first post asking you questions that you decided not to answer until now lol

The check engine light being on is a huge problem if your transmission is not shifting into 5th and 6th Gear.

get the truck scannedand it'll tell you what the lights on for and yes it could very well be a solenoid

Maybe you’re right, but I know it shows 4th which I remember because it doesn’t really make sense to me why they did that.

But if you’re check engine light is on and you know it won’t go past 4th then that’s a problem, I’d be at the dealer ASAP. Or at least pull your codes and see what’s going on

I'm gonna guess, since this thread is a balloon pop.

    Air Injection pump failure.

Going to a shop Saturday to scan the faults. I think it's a Solenoid issue in the transmission that controls 4th and 5th gear. Letcha know.

Yup, reading and diagnosing the active fault codes is the place to start. I wouldn’t be one bit surprised if the issue has nothing to do with the transmission, but it might.

Took it to a local shop, they said it has a faulty wheel speed sensor. 3 to 5 days lead time from Toyota.
