The only thing that I have found to be a problem is having lousy LTE service in my area will cause it to drop Pandora or what ever on line service I am using. My fix is to switch my phone over to 4G. Never had a problem yet in all of my travels.

Do you know if this will work for Android Auto too? I have an aftermarket head unit that has wired carplay and Android auto. I have been looking at dongles to try for a while now

Do you lose the WiFi in the truck if you have that? I’ve been thinking about getting something like this and didn’t know if there were any drawbacks to it

Wireless CarPlay (this is an Apple thing) uses WiFi to connect the phone to the HU after it uses BT to make the initial pairing. So you cannot use WiFi on your phone while you are using wireless CarPlay. This is the case with any Wireless CarPlay, not just these modules. So you do have to have cellular data on your device to be able to stream/use it for anything.

Great video Patrick. Much easier than my installation.

This particular module will only work with Apple unfortunately!...but I believe there are ones out there for Android as well
Thank you!...Yepper, I keep forgetting that when I post the video in these forums you guys can’t see the info below the video, I apologize!...links will be posted below!
Thanks Casey!...and you’re exactly right... @Alex261 the modules initially connect via Bluetooth but then make a WiFi connection so you wouldn’t be able to use the truck WiFi

Sorry I’m a little confused, the WiFi that I pay for through Toyota won’t work? My kids are the only ones that use it. Do I still need to pay for it for the Dongle thing to work

The Wifi service you pay for in your truck will still work. You just can't have your phone connected to that Wifi and the Wireless CarPlay at the same time. Your kids are good to go. What Patrick was saying is that the phone connected to the Wireless CarPlay will not be connected to any other Wifi network.

And no, the truck Wifi is not required for the Wireless CarPlay. Any phone connected to the Wireless CarPlay would have to use the data connection (i.e. LTE) for internet access.

Hey patrick, when you removed the middle section, could’t been possible to run original USB underneath to come out the center console?

I feel the best place to originally run carplay would’ve been from inside center console & thru wire indentation thats already there, and phone would sit on top of armrest

I think I saw where someone did reroute the carplay jack to the center console on this site somewhere, but I couldn't find it.

BUT, with Wireless CarPlay, you don't have to plug your phone into ANYTHING. Unless I need to charge it, I just leave it in my pocket.

Patrick, great write-up. Do you experience and lag/delay when using Bluetooth to speak with someone? I heard that is a symptom with these units. Thanks

I've had that issue, but it seems to be much better since I upgraded the firmware.

Not looking to reroute the carplay jack. I want to hide the cord & run it thru to come out from center console if possible

Hey!...I’m not sure what ya mean to be honest, it wouldn’t make sense to have any cord coming out middle arm rest, you don’t need a cord coming out to you at all (unless I’m misunderstanding your question, which is a strong possibility...I’m not that bright...lol)
Thank you!...yea I have no lag with any of the features, it’s literally instant...calls/music/mapping, it’s all super quick with no lag whatsoever...definitely happy I finally pulled the trigger!

Couple different things going on here...

The method I used was to connect to the factory head unit with an adapter and reroute (via USB extension cable) the function to be in the center console only. Then I plugged my wireless adapter in there, which keeps it hidden but still accessible if I want to hook someone else up via wired without storing them in my adapter. I also added power-only to my original port so I don’t have a dead port just sitting there. This whole setup was a bit of work.

The method Kelly and Patrick have done was to use a 90-degree cable plug/extension and route it down under the console to hide the adapter semi-permanently. With their setup, if they want to unplug the wireless adapter and hook into the original port as a wired CarPlay, they simply unplug the cable that routes under the console area and then they use the original port as designed. Theirs is a much easier and less involved installation.

In theory, you could use their design (L-plug extension cable) and route the other end up into the console if you wanted to, and can find a long enough extension cable with the L-shaped plug. I just would avoid “daisy-chaining” too many cables together and it’s been shown to cause problems with CarPlay depending on cable quality, etc.

At the end of the day, in neither setup do you actually need the wires to connect to your phone except for charging. I never touch my adapter. And my phone goes in the “tray” in my console just before I climb into the truck, and then back in my pocket when I get out... only because it’s not comfortable in my back pocket while driving. I might put the wireless charger in some day, but I don’t care for the green lights.
