Will there ever be a more mpg efficient Tundra?

I’ve seen these before and it’s what baffles me on the tundra. Some folks get mileage like mine and others get mileage like yours. I even asked a non biased forum about the mileage on the tundras and it was the same thing. Some got consistent crap, some got consistent good. Could be some driver issues but just like this website, it’s such a wild difference it’s hard to understand. I’ve wondered at times if there were different ecm profiles that got delivered or something because it just doesn’t make sense.

Call it all you want. It’s never affected my mileage on my 14 Silverado 5.3, my 16 durango 5.7, my 2020 Silverado 5.3, or my 16 392 charger.

I get it. No one wants to hear someone who isn’t a fan boy. I’m just speaking from experience.

Then you drive with your foot on the floor the whole time and your tundra mileage makes 100% sense.

Your opinion means nothing. I’ve driven a multitude of trucks over the past 20 years of various manufacturers and the tundra has the single worst mileage of them all

The simple fact is, you aren’t comparing apples to apples (tank average vs tank average). When you do, the disparity shrinks quite a bit. It’s not 12 vs 20+. It’s 14 vs 17 on average. That’s real world experience aggregated from thousands of people.

Everyone knows the Tundra is worse on mpg, but 14 vs 17 isn’t changing anyone’s life. I like to refer to that lost 3mpg as dealer repellent. :D

I don't think it'll improve much. Toyota will never bring a diesel to the US because of the crazy emissions requirements. You sacrifice weight and range with electric motors and batteries on a truck this size.

I can't complain about this truck though.
    I consistently get 22-23mpg on the highway. Doesn't matter if it's a short 20 mile drive or a 300 mile drive, I'm always in the 22-23mpg range. I have a 2023 Limited TRDOR non-Hybrid.

Most articles on the subject in the wsj indicate that most auto manufacturers have all but abandoned ICE r+d.

I don't get why some people get all bent over someone wanting a little more efficiency out of a truck. I drive tacoma right now. I load my kayaks on the bed, pull a 16' aluminum boat, load my 4wheeler on the bed, and regularly load yard stuff to take to the landfill.

I'm wanting to get a Tundra for the extra cab space(growing family) and a little extra power for going up hill. I would be nice to get a couple of more MPGs out of it even if it its just when it's not loaded or pulling something which is most of the time.

How to drive a Toyota truck, any year.

1: Get in, and it starts like usual, awesome.
2: Turn off all the bullshit that's not needed and proceed.
3: look at your gas gauge, have gas?, yes, good. If not fuel up, again proceed.
4: Expect to pay for the gas that a truck uses when doing truck things.
5: Enjoy being a truck owner, and stop whining about being a truck owner.

I don't have any issues with the fuel eco personally. My tundra I get about 11.7 in city. My acura gets about 10.8. My acura takes premium only, which is about 25 cents more a L. So cheaper to drive the tundra.

The Tundra will never be fuel efficient…no 1/2 ton will EVER be for that matter.

Yes, they are at the lower end of efficiency BUT other manufacturers estimates are horse s?&t in my opinion…

Much closer than we are lead to believe. Most of my friends and family only get a mile or two better (with smaller/equal sized engines from the three domestics).

Idling will absolutely and utterly decimate the Tundra’s mpg’s…it’s a 5.7 (in my case) liter after all. But the 3rd Gen will still have an exponential hit on mpg’s idling vs a 1.5 liter sedan.

Different driving style, different terrain, different altitude, different loading (vehicle weight), modifications such as tire size. There are a ton of variables that will affect real-world fuel economy.

Hell, I see at least a 2 mpg difference in my trip average going to work vs going home. Most of the variables mentioned above remain constant. The difference is that in one direction I have a slight overall increase in elevation - approximately 300 feet total - but I go up one side of a mountain and about halfway down the other, so there is a larger increase in elevation that's overlooked if I only look at beginning and ending elevation.

Yup, we could go on for hours on just factors that will impact fuel economy.

I find it funny that it’s always the 1-5 post new members that come in here and do it. I look at the post count before I even reply because let’s face it, a site or google search will yield millions of results on the MPG question. So here we have another useless thread on beating the same dead horse. Entertaining though.

That depends on how you drive it....as with every comment in this thread. Deactivation only happens under reduced load.

I have to hammer the piss out of my truck or tow heavy to dip into single digit mpg. Driving normally (somewhat aggressive) I average 17ish around town. 17/18 on thr highway @ 70-80mph. If I drive it like an old lady, I can get it into the low 20s, and have seen 24+mpg trip average heading mostly down hill with the wind at 45/50mph.

My '06 4.8 Silverado averaged 17s so I actually don't think the bigger heavier more powerful Tundra is doing that bad on mpgs.

See the next comment. I get that. I'm calling BS on the claim that a vehicle with cylinder deactivation gets the same mileage with the system removed, and that is what he is selling. I'm not buying it.

I sort of have to agree. I have tried to baby the truck with hitting the gas, used premium fuel etc. I get on average 13 mpg.
Only way I can get 20+ is to reset the gauge when cresting a hill and go down it without hitting the gas. At that point it'll show 20+

Does it get a bit better gas mileage than my 2013 tacoma and is much larger? Yes.
