OMFG. This is insane in every sense. I am sure you know, but if you had a GoPro and a YouTube channel with this saga, you may be a millionaire. Think about the mods of a millionaire.

I’ve spent many day’s in the area. The Wind River canyon is a cool area. If you haven’t seen the movie “Wind River” it’s worth watching.

Great story...awesome demonstration of what a real friend is. I am amazed at your preparedness. I had a group of friends back in the day and we would trade off rescuing each other’s boat/snowmobile/motorcycle and after each time we’d add more to the preparedness list but you take it to another level. :hattip:

If you have not already, may want to check out Goodyear G614 tire for your trailer. They do hurt to purchase at $300/each but they are in a league of their own for specs. IMO, I would never roll at freeway speeds with an ST tire if I could avoid it. I would rather run an under rated LT tire before an ST tire.... For 7K axle trailers, the G614 is the only way to go and it has a 3750lb per tire cap....

IIRC the higher the ply trailer tire the lower the rated speed. May want to look up specs on your current tires so you can have a realistic expectation for their performance.

I have heard positive reviews about the GY G614. I have a buddy in TX that runs them on his 47’ triple axle race car hauler. At 320.00 per tire, that’s a bit more than I want to spend. Now on the flip side, what has this cost me on this trip? My time is money, and if this would have been on the weekend I would have been screwed.

So far I have 538.00 in three tires, and need to buy an additional two now. I’m pretty sure the 14 ply tire will go on the spare tire rack on the trailer and never come off unless needed.

The tires I purchased and the others I’m looking at have a N speed rating so, 89mph and I’m good with that. Load rating is 3860 lbs. Most of my towing is 55-75 mph. When I’m in states that have 80+ mph ratings, we still keep the speed at no more than 75 mph for safety. If I’m being honest, fuel economy as well. Once I get over 70 mph, my economy really tanks.

All the 10 ply tires I have purchased with my last two trailers had a speed rating of at least 81 mph. I had these exact tires on my last trailer, 25k miles and did lots of heavy loads. Not one issue. So weird that this batch of 17 tires all had the same issue with a broken belt on my 4 tires. I’m gonna chock it up to really crappy luck.

If I could find a LT tire that could hold the weight, it would be an option. I can only find 3195 lb ratings on 16” wheels. I would also need new wheels since steel wheels are 6” and the aluminum wheels are 6.5” wide and could fit a LT265/70/16. Even with this setup I would be 1200+ lbs under the required trailer rating. Been down that road. If I only had a 10k rated trailer.

I have been tossing back and fourth on what to go with on tires. Since I have new 12 ply tires that are rated pretty good, this is the route I'm going. The 14 Ply with go on the spare tire rack and will be used only in an emergency.

    tire.jpg

Now for the license plate mount. I like the plate being out of the way under the trailer, but really don't like dealing with the plate being exposed to removal. Looking at the back of the trailer, I might be able to attach the plate to one of the ramp doors, but then the ramp lock would beat the hell out of the plate. If I keep the plate in the factory location, there will be a sturdier mount installed.

I don't want to go overboard on this. Having good tires would solve all these issues.

I have never liked the low hanging plates. If you cant mount it vertically on fender, can you make a plate mount that slips in a stake pocket?

Another tire option to consider in that price range is Sailun S637. No experience but seems to have good reviews online. I considered it before going the the G614. I think Goodyear also makes a lower price line of trailer tires.

Trailer tires are def more complex a decision than most give them credit for. I see a lot of trailers with flats on the side of road over all over TX. The thought of changing a tire on a loaded trailer on side of road in middle of summer with traffic going 85 mph pushed me towards the best tire I could find.

Good looking rig and country BTW.

Why is it that trailer tires seem to blow out far more often than vehicle tires? I don't have much towing experience. Is it just because of their size and the weight they are carrying? In nearly 20 years of driving I've never had a blowout.

I have wondered the same thing. Been fortunate to never have a blow out on trailer. I try to think of trailer tires the same way I think of truck tires (and care for them the same way). Easy to care more when each tire is $320 :). I avoid any trailer I cant get a 16" wheel for is because it is more difficult to find a decent trailer tire for 15" wheels.

My guesses as to why tires fail. No particular order.

    Poor quality tire
Over loaded tire (overall or just poorly positioned load)
Used outside of speed rating for load
Physical damage to tire from clipping curbs/driving on shoulder with debris etc
    Improper inflation
    Bent axles
    Damaged rims
    Not balanced
Sprayed with weed killer when not in use
Hit with string trimmer while stored

If I towed in TX, I would definitely be purchasing the best tires available due to the heat. TX towing is no joke, in the limited experience I have down there (mostly in the panhandle).

    Like @Justin Case stated:

    Poor quality
    Overloaded (or close to max)
    Speed and balance
    Age (dry rotting)

Trailer tires take a beating due to curbs, sway (side loading), heavy weight, and heat is probably the biggest tire killer.

One of my buddies has one of those really high dollar air pressure monitors for his trailer tires. When cornering he can see tire pressure and heat going up on the outside tires in the turn.

That’s quite the adventure! Well done!

I’d recommend balancing your trailer tires when you get the others replaced too. Any shake from out of balance just adds to flexing and heat. Not to mention it will make your seat time better.

And it might be worth checking the axle to axle alignment on your trailer too. Pop your rubber EZ lube caps and measure centre of spindle to centre of spindle on both sides.

And I’m hoping it wasn’t just a fuse popped on buddy’s jeep after all that?? :eek2: :D

    Great advice as always Phil.

I agree balancing tires greatly increases the life of tires, bearings, etc. Since April of this year, I have been attempting to get the trailer tires balanced. This next time I will just leave the trailer in the parking lot. I’ve been looking at a set of Centramatics.

When I purchased the emergency tires on the road, both tire shops didn’t balance my new tires. I was shocked. We were on a timeline, so I just shook my head and carried on.

Good idea checking axle alignment. We have a shop not far from me that aligns trailer axles. I have used them before. The trailer tires looked good, but only had like 3-4K miles on them.

The end result on the breakdown was wiring, circuit breaker that was partially crushed, and that was about it.

some folks here will just bolt the plate directly thru the fender, usually have to do it sideways so it fits. MT doesn't seem to mind, doubt CO would care how its displayed so long as its not obscured in any way.

I had it mounted on the fender on my last trailer. I did get pulled over for it due to not having a light illuminating the plate. Another problem is I have drive over fenders and use them. The plate would look like pretty bad rather quickly. :(

If you don't mind Sean, phone a friend please.

Another route I can go is make a spring loaded plate mount.

Ya all rear LP’s have to have a light. Amazon cheap would do just fine.

Phoned a friend (actually 3) That love Easy PC to stop. Here’s the general consensus:

“As far as I know they are required to be mounted horizontal with a plate light.”

    Same in TX.

I have mounted them vertical but also wired a light.

I have done a horizontal removable plate in a stake pocket before. Even wired a light with a plug.
