Mine had some sort of fuel cut off issue. I replace just about everything in the fuel system but the injector it was held in with 2 screws and the PO had striped them out and I was done fucking with it

That was the car that "popped my cherry" on working on cars myself. I rebuilt the engine and replaced the clutch few times, the timing belt twice and what not. That's what gave me the confidence to buy my 4Runner with a motor that was on the way out

Better off...it cost me a arm and leg to get a 700r4 to stand up..eventually put a 350 turbo in it ...but it sucked to drive on the highway:)

You don't really want one, they are a "novelty" car.

My dad has owned 7 series since the early 90's....did a quick sting in an S-class in early 2000's. He bought a P85+ about 3 years ago. It's a fast car, don't get me wrong. But it is a POS in terms of what else is available in it's price range.

Now some context, we are big electric car people. My great grandfather helped pioneer the electric golf cart battery. My family has owned a business called Trojan Battery which was the largest OE electric golf cart battery manufacturer for the last 85+ years (also make marine, commercial, etc). We finally sold the business a few years ago (i had nothing to do with the business, working for family blows and I learned that at 16). We've had EV1's, and other various electric.

Whenever I talk to owners of teslas there are two classes, the ones who rave about them, and the ones who say they won't buy another one. My first question is what they drove before. The ones who say they won't buy another drove S classes / 7 Series / etc. The ones who would buy another one came up from a lower class of vehicle.

The fit and finish sucks, the cars aren't comfortable for long drives. And the service quality SUCKS. Few things to not that he's had issues with his:

    1. Center Console - he ordered this when it was built, Carbon Fiber. 2 years later they finally told him they weren't going to make it (and didn't refund him till he actually asked for it

    2. Auto lift and lower has broken 3x's

    3. Passenger door would open automatically, sometimes while traveling on the highway (this one gets interesting)
    • When tesla was first notified, they said they were 30 days away from being able to see him, and they wouldn't be able to come and pick the car up and deliver a loaner like they normally had because loaners were slim these days. That he'd have to drop it off (not a huge deal, but 30 fucking day s out? THE DOOR OPENS IT'S FUCKING SELF WHILE DRIVING DOWN THE ROAD)
    • When they initially said 30 days, we couldn't believe it, but they stayed firm. We even went into great detail about how this literally is one of the most unsafe things that can take place
    • First fix worked for a few days.....then it started again, guess what? 2 months before they could see it again. This time I got involved, they finally fixed it that week. BUt you'd think with the PR they've had, they would address something like this very very fast
    4. Cars been in numerous times for suspension bolts coming loose

Go sit in a 7 series, Lexus LS, S-Class, and then go sit in a Tesla......

Back to beaters......My tundra was suppose to be my beater, the car to take the family in, not care about getting dirty, not modding, etc (I ironically traded in a 7 series for the truck). Well, it's eaten into my project money for all my other cars cause i can't stop tinkering with it. It depends what kind of gearhead you are, but you'll end up doing a few things here and there to the beater IMO, so be prepared for that. My main reason for buying the tundra was resale value, it's the best i've seen on a vehicle made at this kind of volume. I'd say drive the piss out of the truck, put a ton of miles on it...don't worry about a beater.

    You add in reduced:

truck maintenance cost? Most people don't factor tire wear reduced, oil changes, windshields, wear parts. Almost always is cheaper on a commuter car than a truck.

Truck replacement cost? (5 years vs 8-10 or more). So factor in a 40,000.00 truck over 5 years vs 10 years. Might also factor in truck price increases over said period. In the next 5-10 years, I could see a 1/2 ton truck in the 80k range.

Ease of driving, especially in town? Not to mention door dings, people backing into you and driving off, etc.

Use some of these calculations and you might reconsider.

I bought a 1999 Corolla as my beater about five years ago for $3,000. It had a few dings and some scratches but the car only had 100,000 miles on it and was very sound mechanically. I've done all the maintenance on it and put new tires on it and done nothing else but drive it. I have a 30 mile commute each way to work (all highway) and average 35-36 mpg. I would feel comfortable driving that car cross-country. Added bonus ... could care less about door dings in it so we always take it to places with tight parking. I've picked up several more door dings and scratches along the way but do nothing but laugh when I find one, but I would have been irate if it happened to the Tundra. That car has probably saved me $500 in PDR on what would have been damage to the Tundra or my old Tacoma. That Corolla has been one of the best purchases I've made.

I leased a new Corolla last year (Sport edition)
    2 year lease
    $160/month
Maintenance: $0.00. It's a lease. If I need tires then yes, I would be on the hook. As of now/ just oil changes, tire rotations, etc are covered via lease.

I have a vehicle allowance, and a fuel card. My allowance is pretty much double than the cost of the lease.

Fuel? Like I said, I have a fuel card so I'm not concerned. We are allowed to fuel our primary vehicles. We do not separate personal/work miles.

Doing this allows me to keep the wear/tare off of the Tundra all together and keep it for a weekend vehicle.

The lease on the Corolla will be up next year. When that occurs, we will probably trade it in for a Camry and toss the wife's Highlander (also leased as she wasn't sure if she wanted to keep it vs a 4R) so we can reduce our vehicle payments down some.
My wife just began working from home, and we work opposite shifts so there's never really an issue.

Got myself a 2002 Subaru Legacy w/200k mile on it. Paid cash so no monthly. Insurance kept at bare bones min requirement, meaning I'm covered if I hit someone, but my car is not covered. Since it's old and not worth a lot, any damage repair would be more than the value of the car itself. So why bother.

Did the math and would I think I will save on gas will take 2 years to get my return on investment. But saves 120 miles on my truck per week (I know it doesn't seem like a lot). Also serves as a car for family to use when I town so they don't have to use our good one LOL.

Yep. Then you don't have to cover those really expensive tires every 1-1.5 years on our trucks. For the guys that run mud terrains get to do this more.

My maintenance budget for my current truck is 120.00 per month. A good portion of that is registration costs. My tire budget is 19.00 per month over a 60 month period (realistically it will be sooner than 5 years, but I can adjust).
