Why does toyota use canister oil filter?

Darn, that's what I was afraid of. I'm trying to go out and buy one today but all the Toyota parts stores are closed Sundays.

MONEY. The reason for the internal filter was to get more trucks into the dealership and discourage DIY.

Jowett isn't selling billet caps anymore. I have a Jowett on one of my trucks, I can't get one for the other. :frusty:

Same here. No issues with the factory housing. I will also add that the o ring on the main canister changes the feel of tightening/loosening the canister; most traditional bolts “break free” when a large amount of initial torque is applied, and then it becomes very easy to thread the rest of the fastener off/out. The canister “feels” like it needs a large amount of torque to spin off but, except for the initial torque, it’s usually the o ring dragging, necessitating constant torque for several rotations. Impact guns are a no-no for getting the canister off.

That's ridiculous. Recycling the spin-ons was seen as not "environmentally friendly" so cartridge filter designs took their place. I'm okay with it for many of the technical reasons stated (especially the bypass valve inherent in the filter canister and is not subject to the variations in off the shelf spin-on filters). It does take longer and is a bit more messy but I don't drive that much anymore and my OCI (in time) is a lot longer than it used to be.

Add to the list of folks that love their Jowett housing. If my truck gets totaled in a crash, this is what I'm probably pulling off it before insurance company gets it!

I'm on my 3rd Tundra since 2011 and have done every oil change myself.
Never had an issue with the drain plug or removing/reinstalling the factory plastic housing. Never had an issue with mess or hassle or still having a ton of oil spill out of the housing after using the drain plug.
It's a few more steps than the old style spin-on can filters, but I've never found a reason to bitch about this one.
Any mess or fuqups during an oil change are usually my own doing and nothing to do with equipment design.

Don't worry, in the not so distant future, you'll be able to pull up an app on your phone and send your self-driving car to the shop, where it will be completely serviced by robots and then it will drive itself back home.
    Completely idiot proof.

Yep, these are my thoughts exactly. Using forethought and planning makes it a lot easier. Have all the tools collected ahead of time, get all of the necessary equipment (creeper, rags, etc.) staged and ready and methodically go through the process step-by-step, don't rush anything. Since I'm retired I can do this any day of the week and that makes it a lot more convenient.

I'd be interested for sure! I keep seeing this mention of Jowett with no idea what that is but I looked it up and am 100% interested. I ended up buying a Dorman one yesterday from AutoZone just to have as an emergency backup should I have damaged my OEM one that likely CarMax overtightened
My first oil change and it didn't go as smooth as I had hoped. I ended up NOT changing or even inspecting my oil filter as I was afraid of breaking the housing and being stranded.

But yes, I would very much be interested in buying one.

Well I should have made a video the last time I changed the Tundra and 4runner at the same time. Very easy process.

I recently did the oil/filter changes on my Tundra and 4Runner. Same design.
Dealer had done both previous changes.
I could not break the Oil filter seal on the 4runner cannister, even with the 3/8" socket extension in the motiv filter wrench.
There was no way as I was on my back and could not get enough leverage.
I had the the fear of cracking the cannister as the dealer torqued it on way too tight.
What I ended up doing was using a socket over the motiv filter with 1/2" extension and a larger torque wrench. It allowed me to break the oil filter seal and I was able to move it. Big relief when it moved.

What can't everyone follow Subaru? On my wifes outback, there are covers/skid plates but I can get to the drain plug - no jacking needed. Filter is on top.

I have to admit though for the cannister, it is nice to see the paper filter element and how dirty it is.

I would like to take this opportunity and email you again :)

@Jowett question. If we did a large group buy, set of 10 or 15+ orders would you consider it? Could make a group buy post on here and tacoma world. Or would a larger order be a deterrent?

There are plenty of interested people, I just need to take the time to make the changes to get it done. Some are product design, others production, and last includes life in general.

I ordered these from sparks. 2 filters and a spare housing (just to have it).
Sounds like you needed one same day, but I'll put this here in case anyone needs the numbers.

A lot of the Toyotas, maybe All? ... not sure ... have that stupid cannister. Our 2017 Rav4 has it and I really dislike it.
