Why can’t the Tundra get along with aftermarket wheels?

I have read post after post on this forum and all over the internet about steering wheel vibration with aftermarket rims on Tundras. Some people seem to have found a solution through Road Force Balancing but many tried it without success. Hub centric rings and extended thread lugs are other fixes I’ve seen mentioned.

I went from stock steel wheels to 18” KMC XD128 Machetes (hub centric) with Toyo AT Open Country 275/65 and still have the vibration after road force, alignment, replacing a bad tire, and using extended thread lugs torqued to 97 ft/lbs. It’s not unbearable but still quite noticeable. I plan to have another road force done at my 5,000 mile service.

My question is this, has anyone figured out a cause of the vibration with aftermarket wheels? Is it simply the change in offset/backspacing the Tundra doesn’t like?

I’ve been running aftermarket wheels and offroad tires from day one. I’ve got 70k miles and I have never had steering wheel vibrations or shaking. Sounds like you may have bad tires or unbalanced tires. Hopefully you can find out what the problem is.

Amen brother. Put on some Moto Metal wheels and BFG KO2’s and have been through the works... ground force shows a tire is a potential issue. Was able to get BFG to give me a warranty credit and now considering Nitto Ridge Grappler as guy at tire store says he’s had good luck with them. I’m praying the new tires work better because the vibration in my back and passenger seat are making me hate my truck.

why hate the truck? i would be hating anything aftermarket that was installed before i took it out on the truck. i would put my stock wheels back on and start there. perhaps you have a bad wheel or bad wheel and tire combo. i would definitely undo every add on 1 at a time til the problem goes away.

You’re right, I love the truck but the experience with this issue has hampered my new vehicle experience. Everything was installed by Toyota and they’ve failed to be able to help me so lots of frustration there. Tire store is helping and we are going to start replacing tires under warranty. Will be putting original tires and wheels on as well to confirm tire issue. I spend a lot of time on the road so the vibrating is getting on my nerves and like I said, Toyota has been no help.

Lol. Has absolutely nothing to do with the truck. It’s your crappy wheels, tires, or your tire shop can’t do a proper balancing.

good choice going back to a known starting point and working from there.

wheels and tires can be defective it's just nobody looks there first.

I recently poop canned a brand new nose tire for an out of round condition and a brand new main gear tire for a egg shaped bulge in the sidewall. that's over 1k dollars in 2 aircraft tires that never made it to the hangar floor much less a runway. the tires were warrantied and new installed. unfortunately tire shops dont do thorough inspections of what they received and installed. quick production and smoke breaks tend to be the norm.

it happens... it just sucks when it happens to us. good luck and let us know what you discover along the way.

I just got the same wheels - XD 128, and have nitto ridge grapplers. So far after a few hundred miles it’s good. No vibrations or anything.

Maybe I just got a bad balance job done. I guess I could try one more road force at a different shop.

I’ve dealt with this too on my 4Runner. Hub-centric wheels are the only solution unless you know a machinist who can make you some stainless steel spacer rings. The nylon/plastic just don’t work.

When these types of issues happen, it's generally the tires especially when you're dealing with heavy AT and MT tires. They just take more effort to balance from what I've noticed. If the wheel is ever in question, have the tech dismount the tire and spin balance the wheel along on the machine. An out of round wheel will show itself right away. If the wheel looks true and straight then it falls back on the tires being bad. Even straight from the factory it can be bad right off the bat.

The centerbore of the wheel should be 110.1mm to be considered hubcentric.

18 inch fuel wheels and 275/70/18 Nitto Ridge Grapplers on the truck now for almost 17k miles....zero issues and zero wheel shake/vibrations. I'd agree with others that you either possibly have a bad wheel/tire.
