Why are the Tundras so undervalued

Yes, I personally think the CPO Tundra is worth a couple thousand extra considering the extended warranty coverage. If memory serves me correctly, my 2019 Tundra SR5 Sport (purchased with 55K miles) is covered up to 125K miles as a CPO.

I didn’t mean because of what you posted. I meant it should change because it’s dead wrong

The tundra is almost always, in every year, the highest resale value full size pickup. It may be a little lower than the Taco (except it is actually beating the Taco this year. Check out the KBB links above).

IMHO I think it helps to distinguish between *private party sales* and retailer. I routinely see 'my truck' (2020 Tundra 4WD SR5 with TRD Off-Road Package) being sold easily for about $2-3K more than I paid for mine ($41.7K), with 80K miles or less on them when sold from the dealership.

Now...do I see those being sold for that same $ amount private party? No way...but neither are they a wash. All things being equal, I almost always see a comparable F150 being sold for a few grand less than the Tundra.

With that said, I think the premium's not quite as high, as we're in a market where features are played up *far* more than reliability. Even on this board, the # of people who are starting to say "Reliability ain't enough anymore" has grown quite a bit in the last 2 to 3 years.

Their must be some disconnect here after reading the OP statement. On the contrary, I just spent a couple months searching for a 2021 Tundra to get the last of the V8 and I had to pay over original MSRP + $3K to have it shipped across the country. I felt like I actually found a good deal because I was seeing the same trucks selling for 10K over MSRP in my area, so even with paying the transport bill, I saved money...

I was recently speaking with a Socal dealer about purchasing a 2020 Tundra TRD Pro with 30K and theyh would not budge on asking price of $64K and the truck sold a few days later, so not sure where this info is coming from. Granted, the Pro was made in smaller numbers and is more desirable, but I'm coming from being a Tacoma owner for the last 17 years... That said, I'm also keeping my Tacoma because it has been trouble free since 2006 when I bought it new...

It's the same over here. You can't find one in Texas under 60-65K if it is a 20-21 PRO. Platinum and 1794's are selling for around 45-55K for same year, same mileage. I was just offered 43K for my 3-year old 2020. Not sure where the "undervalue" is coming from.

A few months back I took the 21 Tundra in for a trade-in value test, AutoNation in Houston came with $38191 with around 24000 miles then, I know they can and will turn it around and list it for $45K plus....

On Facebook marketplace place I’m seeing a ton of tundras from Texas all only a few years old with about 100 to 120k 4x4 in various trims and the owners are selling them from 15k to low 20k

2nd gen Tacomas with 100k miles fetch 10 to 15k more easily all day everyday (25k to mid 30s)

Tundra book values are way way higher than what you are seeing dependent upon year/trim.

Are these examples salvage titles and/or flood vehicles?
Or, perhaps sellers hard up for some quick cash...

They are probably wrecked pieces of crap, which is why they are being sold on Facebook. I just ran two like for like on KBB, 2015 Tundra's and Tacoma's, with 150K each and both times there was a 5K adder for the Tundra.

I paid $44k out the door when I bought mine new in Sept 2016. My bank called a few months ago and offered me $36k for her. I declined as she's paid for and I'd be scared to not find a truck this reliable and why would I want to have a vehicle payment again.

I only bought new, because when I was looking, used Tundra's were almost as much as new ones. I'm guessing not much has changed.

KBB valuations have had more ups and down's than a whore's drawers this year. At the beginning of the year I checked mine for a laff, it was at about $4.5k for a trade in on a 2013, 250k, 2wd DC, not so bloody funny. :(:(
Checked last month for same but now with 265k on the clock and trade in is now just over $8k,, which is kinda where it's been whenever I've looked in the pre-2021 past, even a year after buying it (yeah, that was somewhat of a shock back then, but she did have a bit of a bang on the back end in a former life!).

That's why you have to look at Black Book, JD Power and MMR, in addition to KBB to get a vehicles 'true' market value.
But, regardless, yes, the market has been up and down....and is once again trending up.

The OP has a 2005 so yeah not going to get as much. I know someone with a one that old, 400k miles, leaked oil but still ran fine, sold it for 4k which seems good to me for vehicle that old. He got a quote for like 5k to fix the oil leaks, needed to remove entire engine. So it's going to vary with truck that old that needs work. Prior to selling it he loved the truck had been diving it so long and said it never had any kind of break down or repair, only thing he did was replace the timing belt, and never even serviced transmission. So yeah a truck like that might be worth 3k for a project truck. Fix the oil leaks themselves and be awesome for off road. Was already beat up. lol

Had my ‘21 taco for 1.5 years and traded it for the same value as my purchase price ($42k). Needed more room for a 3rd car seat.

You should have no concerns if the maintenance records are good. I just purchased a 21 DC with 88K. The truck was serviced like clock work at the dealer and because of that I had no concerns with the mileage vs. time. Truck has been great.

IMO Leather seats and a tent don't go together. Cav blue IMO is the best stand out color without being too bold. My 2020 SR5 with the lift, wheels, lack of chrome and some other stuff from the dealer was 59k. No reason after 3 years with 30k mi that would change.
