Yeah that’s what pays the bills around this establishment.

Although most days it looks more like this:

Stopped behind all red signals (intermediates in these cases) waiting on trains ahead or opposing traffic.

Well there was this guy Larry Walters who strapped himself into a lawn chair with a bunch of balloons. Alleged his plan was to plink a few with his pellet pistol to descend but he ended up flying through class B airspace. They couldn’t find anything to get on other than failure to establish two way communication while transiting the class B airspace.

    LOL.

There are engines out there that are way worse.

At least that GE is relatively quiet. The EMD 2 strokes drone and drone, they make me want to beat children if I forget earplugs.

Yep, the ubiquitous EMD 710 series V16.

710 being the cubic inch displacement of each cylinder.

    https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/EMD_710

Intake ports at the bottom of each cylinder sleeve, with 4 exhaust valves up top. Requires positive displacement forced induction to run at all, so low throttle settings the turbocharger is clutched into a gear train on the crank shaft to turn and make boost. Higher exhaust gas velocity as more fuel is burned it switches over to the hot side turbine and de-clutches.

This is what it looks like when you blow up a turbo on one of them:

If your adult enough and adept enough what you do when a dumbass deer is standing in the middle of the road is you turn off your headlights and blast the horn. It's a simple concept. Deer like headlights, don't like a horn. It's a simple thing. There's an old expression "Deer in the headlights". They freeze or dive into the headlights. Bottom line is you have to be smarter than a deer. You're welcome.

LOL, I have about 100+ dead deer that provide a counterpoint to your assertion. They stand right in the middle of railroad tracks and get clobbered by trains I’m operating from 20-60 MPH. Lights off train horn blaring.

No it’s his fault. DS’s stop us in incredibly stupid spots all the time because most of them don’t know the territory they dispatch and they’re generally bad at what they do.

You can pass that criticism on to him.

I hope they get hurt really bad.

Seriously we don’t have many good DS’s anymore.

    LOL.

I’ve been doing this long enough now to have observed the quality of dispatching steadily decline.

When I started we had over 400 coal sets in service, and dispatchers that knew how to dispatch. Now we have around 230 coal sets and the trips take as long or longer partly because the dispatcher quality is way way way down.

A lot of experienced DS’s have retired and took their knowledge with them. We have a few on my subdivision that literally have to be reminded several times per trip to push a button and give us proceed signals. The company is always bitching about fuel consumption blaming train crews, when their dispatching center consistently has us coming to a dead stop for no reason, and then starting again.

There are a few decent ones left, but getting more rare every passing year.

By the way if it’s NightChief from m4c.net we’ve talked about this before. He knows there are some real duds among his colleagues.

Not that TY&E is any better, the company loves furloughing people so much that a lot of our new conductors are permanently new because they get laid off, don’t come back, and then are replaced by another new face.
